Windows 10 upgrade advice

For some reason I have been unable to upgrade to windows 10, the, "get windows 10" screen has for the last 3 weeks been telling me it's downloading. When I've tried to update using the windows update I get a failed to update notice with an error code 80070005.

I used the media download tool and downloaded an ISO and did a fresh install on another drive as I wanted to test it as a clean install and wasn't sure if creating a bootable disk an installing on top of my windows 7 would do a proper job (I've read a number of scare stories from people who's updates have gone wrong and using the roll back feature didn't work.

So I have it installed now on another drive and have been installing my major apps and drivers to see if they're all running fine and so far they are. Not overly enamoured with it so far but early days yet and it's really performance boosts and stability I'm hoping for.

So my problem is, since I did a fresh install and not an update it's telling me that it's NOT activated and wants me to go and pay £99 in order to activate what I was led to believe was a free update. What to do? Should I contact microsoft here in the UK or does anyone hear know a way of getting up and running?

Thanks in advance

Steve

Put your previous OS back on. Do an in place upgrade. Copy new W10 via a utility that does that. The one on computer properties is NOT the license key.  Then do a clean install.
In place upgrade was the only way to get your license.

Isn't the, "in place upgrade" the one that upgrades via the windows update?

If so then that's the method that isn't working for me.
Also, although time consuming I would much prefer to wipe the disk and do a clean install and surely the, "in place upgrade" doesn't cater for that?

No. You need Windows 10 to install over the existing OS.  You can do it by Windows update or use a DVD or USB. DVD make work better.
You need to go back to your other OS first. It's been mentioned a few times on this forum to do an upgrade, get the key and do a clean install.

I think it might actually be a case of my upgrade not actually being ready yet although my understanding was that it should have been ready for UK residents on July 29th unless that was just a, 'starting from' date?

The, "get windows 10" icon in my task bar tells me it's downloading but below that and greyed out it says, "update coming soon" when I click on the, "View confirmation" tab it says my upgrade is reserved and I'll get a notification when it's ready to install.

Am I being hasty or should I not have had my confirmation already?

I cannot get my Lenovo Yoga 2 laptop to upgrade. It offered me the option to start the process, and then went through this big installation procedure, then after it restarted to complete the upgrade, I was mildly amused to see that I was still rocking Windows 8. Did a search only to find that many other Lenovo owners have experienced the same thing. Not such a biggie because I only use the thing to do my accounts and send out customer invoices - my DAW upgraded fine.

When it is ready to go it will ask you to schedule your upgrade. One of my machines does not have the confirmation yet so don't worry about it.

Re: Windows 10 upgrade advice 2015/08/18 00:27:58 (permalink)
Make sure windows 7 or 8 is on your hard drive ready to be upgraded.

    Either will probably work:

    1) Create a new administrator user in windows
    2) Log in as that user
    3) Run install DVD.

Corrupted users accounts are causing Win10 upgrades to fail.

The other alternative is to run the install DVD as the current user, and make sure you select the clean install option wiping all apps etc.

If you've just done a fresh Win 7 or 8 OS install you can probably just run it straight away without above work arounds.

In all cases you will get a license.
Do not boot off the CD when starting your PC, run it from windows.

If you want an entirely clean install (because a clean install isn't really a clean install!!l), boot off the DVD when starting your PC, and install windows again after formatting the partition. However DO NOT do this until you have installed Windows 10 at least once via the methods listed above.

Always backup first with something like acronis if you have data !!!

    Cheers.

Another thing to watch out is make sure your upgrade media matches what you have installed. I.e. If you have the home version don't expect to be able to upgrade to Pro.

Btw you don't need to wait for a confirmation.

    Ta.

You can also do the upgrade over top of your current installation via the Media Creation Tool, Upgrade this computer or something, that's how I did it on one of mine, instead of waiting, as well as getting the ISO and burning it to disk.

From what I have read, it is sort of somehow tied to your machine (motherboard perhaps)

Because its an upgrade your key comes from your older OS. Every one of the upgrades I did didn't ask for a key. All are activated too.

Apparently the product key numbers it finds is generic. i.e. There are only about 10 few product key numbers that is being generated for everybody. So I would not rely on that. I seems auth is 100% fully going through the cloud unless you paid for Win10.

So then after having done an in place upgrade how do you then do a complete new install where you start with a blank disc when you don't actually have a licence key to enter where it's required.

Or is it that after having done the in place upgrade you can somehow do a full install.

I am led to believe so. just grab the iso and go go go

I never did a clean install myself, only 3 in place updates and 3 very clean rollbacks

So then after having done an in place upgrade how do you then do a complete new install where you start with a blank disc when you don't actually have a licence key to enter where it's required.

Or is it that after having done the in place upgrade you can somehow do a full install.

What I did was install 8 and let it update than I got the media tool to upgrade to 10. This was on my desktop for a new HD.

First off, Windows 10 is free for a year. Free as in free beer. You should go to microsoft.com and download anything you need for upgrade. They and only they can answer your compatibility issues.

I have a laptop with 8.1 that, although all updates have been done, will not show the get windows 10 icon.  If I run the microsoft win 10 icon troubleshooter it says a certain file is not installed and offers me a link to install it.  When I do that it says it can't because that file IS already installed.  This lappie has no cd/dvd drive.  Any suggestions as to how to get that dern icon???

as others have alluded to, that icon is literally only an advert saying you can get it.
try opening a cmd prompt as administrator and typing wuauclt.exe/upgradenow

It took me 3 days to work out why my win 7 wouldn't update, turns out I had one hotfix missing.
try running this tool if the update fails

I would still recommend upgrading from DVD rather than what has been download on hard drive. More chance of success as less likely files will be locked. Just don't boot of it. Ta.

Thanks for the advice, still not sure what to do right now and not even sure if I can be bothered to be jumping through all these hoops to get an OS I may or may not want. I happen to really like windows 7 but if the performance is much improved in 10 then I'd give it a shot.

I have tried the above fixes and a few other but still get the error code 80070005.

I have actually called microsoft support today in some call centre with an appallingly bad line but she just gave me the above methods I'd already tried.

It seems absurd that if I want to install from a bootable disk or usb (and format my drive first) I may have to download a pirated copy but if I can't get the upgrade to work then what choice do I have?

You don't boot up from the install disk. You must run it from windows. It will not wipe. If you get an error create a new user account and run it from there. Always back up first with something like acronis.

I gave you the full instructions in my first post
    Ta.

For Windows 7 Microsoft says all that's required for the free upgrade is to have Windows 7 with Service Pack 1 installed, and to not do a clean install the 1st time you install Windows 10. If you meet that requirement you can use the MediaCreationTool to do the upgrade. If you meet the requirements and are having problems getting the upgrade through Windows Update via the Get Windows 10 Reserved Copy method. You can try using the MediaCreationTool using the Upgrade this PC now selection. Download the MediaCreationTool from here: http://windows.microsoft....-creation-tool-install

There is a legitimate Windows 10 ISO available for download from microsoft: https://www.microsoft.com...are-download/techbench
