Windows 8 or Windows 7......Update!!

I'm trying to decide on which one to get for my new build, but don't know much about Win8 and X2. Which is a better fit for X2 and in general useage?? (I'm not currently planning on touch screen)

I read on the Cake_Blog that Win8 had better perfomance results (overall) than Win7, but how is it for you guys in day to day ease of use/functionality?

Thanks,

Update: I'm using Win 8 Pro x64 in my new build under Classic Shell and it's simply excellent. I'm in a more familiar environment with the Win 7 Classic Shell and there's an easy access to all the Metro Apps if needed to. The install process was also a breeze and it practically updated all the drivers on its own.
Thanks Drew, Paul, and all :) for all the tips.

Mesh I stayed with 7 for the one I ordered.

I like 7 and just don't have anything for touch screen. I didn't want
to deal with driver issues should there be any.

Hey Mesh,

I don't have X2, but was having similar thoughts of what I will do if X3, whenever that comes finally comes across with the goods.

On the whole I like win 8 in general use (laptop) - much better than my previous vista one, but in fairness I never really liked that, so it didn't have much to beat in my case.

First thing I would do is to check if win 8 drivers are available for any hardware you have. Also I believe win 8 is about to have a .1 patch very soon, so I would probably hang fire for that if going with win 8.

Windows 95 'cause everyone knows 95 is better than either 7 or 8, right?

I'm also moving from my old Vista. There are Win8 drivers for my hardware and I'd like to get those touch screen monitors in the future (not a priority, but it looks neat :)). I'm seeing some mixed opinions on general useage on various forums/users. I know Win7 is very stable, but Win8 is more future ready no (with the stability)??

So far Windows 8 works fine for me. But I needed to download and install the free Classic Shell program, as I find the Metro touch interface annoying. Classic Shell fixes that problem beautifully.

And people should note that Windows 7 or even Vista drivers will often (usually?) work fine with Windows 8. The last major Windows driver model change was XP -> Vista.

Also note that if you buy Windows 8 Pro you can always legally downgrade to Windows 7 if necessary or desired (you need to have installation media for 7 for this).

In order, then, to discover the limit of deepest tones, it is necessary not only to produce very violent agitations in the air but to give these the form of simple pendular vibrations. - Hermann von Helmholtz, predicting the role of the electric bassist in 1877.

I figured that you'd probably know about the drivers etc, but sometimes we forget the obvious. I'm not sold on touch screen for a daw to be honest, apart from being uncomfortable reaching over to them all the time, they're gonna need cleaning a lot if my phone is anything to go by.

From the little I've read, it seems that people are also using the mouse/keyboard on these touch screens (depending on the application at hand). The good thing about getting Win8 would be if (in the near future) I wanted touch screen, my OS is already....uhmmm ready.

If hardware, drivers, software, controllers are all compatible and won't be an issue at all? Windows 8.

But eventually,  finally,  dang it,  after several years of meditation and/or procrastination.... almost everybody will be using Windows 8, or skip that and go straight to 9?, or X? LOL!!

OK, shhhh... I'm going back to my meditated state!!

For those not old enogh, a little history lesson...

Windows 3.0  Yes
Windows 3.1  No
Windows 3.11 Yes
Windows 95  No
Windows 95 SP1  Yes
Windows 98 No
Windows 98 ME Yes
Windows 2000 No
Windows XP Yes
Windows Vista NO
Windows 7 Yes
Windows 8 ------    See a pattern yet?

For those that don't remember, 3.0 3.1 and 3.11 were more than point updates, they changed the way Windows worked, added networking as standard and introduced a lot of the concepts that we take for granted today.  But they got it wrong in 3.1 by making networking an addon extra!!

Win 95 was a big step change from Win 3.x and it didn't work, until the release of sp1 when it mostly did.

Win 98 undid a lot of the changes to Win 95 and Win 98 ME (Millenium Edition) became the one to use untill Win Xp  (The less said about Win 2000 the better)

Vista continued the alternating sequence of break it / fix it, with Win 7 being everything that Vista could/should have been...

So... Win 8 is next and true to form...  it is mostly un-usable in business.
Win 9 should be really good though!!

By Classic Shell I guess you mean the front end to make it look/work like Win 7?   I've not used it.

Even that is an old idea that started with Win 95 so you could turn off the task bar and all other Win 95 stuff and make it look/behave just like 3.11

From the little I've read on Classic Shell, it seems you could get all the functionalty of Win8 with the looks/feel of Win7. The only real reason I'm considering getting Win8 is for hopefully using touch screen in the near future (when these monitors come down in price a bit). Other than that, I really have no reason to get Win8....especially, when Win7 is a winner. Decisions.....decisions....

The Desktop is still there in Win 8, but without the start button to access your files and programs (sorry... apps..)

As long as you can create desktop shortcuts to your programs (sorry...  apps...) then you can use it just like Win 7.

The new start screen is great, if you're on a tablet.  Totaly useless on a PC with no touch screen.

SP1 is said to be a backdown by MS by reinstating the start button.  In reality they're just adding a button that takes you to the existing start screen, rather than having to hover your mouse in the lower left corner...

Looking at your sig, I always wondered why you have 1000W Psu? Does your current DAW draw that much power?

I'm asking as I'm planning on building a new rig (http://forum.cakewalk.com/X2-Gaming-Rig-m2843118.aspx) which I'll be doing some light gaming as well and gamers in general, do use/abuse a lot of power.

I would say the general view seems to be that many are afraid of Win 8, though it seems no one can offer any tangible reason why it should be avoided (outside of an abundance of caution).

I have Win 8 with Classic Shell. I have uninstalled all the apps except Skydrive and Store, 'cause they can't be removed, I just un-pinned them from the start screen.

Once you have got rid of that stuff  the metro screen is usable, but I still work the old way with desk-top icons and the start menu, depending on the type of program. The tiles for programs are just huge, not stupidly huge like the tiles for apps just a bit daft large. If they could be reduced in size it would be a big improvement, then with the grouping functions the start screen would start to become actually useful.

I decided to skip Win 7 all together and go with Win 8 as I considered it more future proof.

The biggest problem with windows 8 in my book is no Solitaire, Mahjongg Titans or Minesweeper

The new start screen is great, if you're on a tablet.  Totaly useless on a PC with no touch screen.

Totally disgree, in what way is it difficult ?

The biggest problem with windows 8 in my book is no Solitaire, Mahjongg Titans or Minesweeper

You can download them for free in the store.

The "charm" bar is the only thing that really bugs me - would be nice to have the facility to turn that off.

Glyn Barnes

You guys are killing me....slowly....
Man, I'll tell you what, I've gone back and forth between these two (as of the last few days)...my heads starting to spin.

The "future proof" comment is what my original thinking was too, so I really do appreciate your input/being an actual user Glyn.

Have you run into any functional issues with general use in Win 8?

The general view seems to be stay with Win 7 unless you really need touch.

I would say the general view seems to be that many are afraid of Win 8, though it seems no one can offer any tangible reason why it should be avoided (outside of an abundance of caution).

This.

I think many people are just repeating what they have read / heard somewhere else rather than having tried it out themselves.
