X2 Gaming Rig
I'm planning on buying these next week, but would like your advice on these "initial" components to avoid any compatibility issues. I'd appreciate any/all suggestions/improvements/deletions/additions on making this a solid build. 1) MB - ASROCK_Z77_OC_Formula2) CPU - i7-3770k 3) RAM - G.SKILL_Ripjaws_X_Series (16GB - 2x8Gb sticks) 4) PSU - Rosewill_RX850-S-B_850w5 GPU - HIS-IceQ_Radeon_HD_78706) CPU Cooler - Noctua_NH-D147) SSD OS Drive - Samsung_840_Series_MZ-7TD250BW8) HD - Western_Digital_WD_Black_WD_2002FAEX_2TB9) Case - AZZA_Solano_1000_Full_ATX I have a 1TB HD that I'll pull out from my current sys and use that for my projects. I'm not sure if it's better to go with Win8 or Win7? (I currently don't have touch any screens, but if Win8 is better for X2, I'd go with that......there are drivers available for all my hardware). Advice needed on this as well..... Not being an experienced builder, most of these items I chose were from reviews that users had done on gamer forums, NewEgg, and other sites etc....so, your input will be greatly.....GREATLY appreciated. Thanks guys!!

That's very similar to my gear, and you will love it. I have the same CPU, similar RAM and PSU and a 240 gig SSD. Sonar runs way better off of a SSD. I have not enabled any over clocking or other performance tuning. Power supply tuning is not enabled. The thing just chews through video games, DAW duty and video. You'll really love having the power, and the computer will never get bogged down.

Thanks John. I'm totally excited about having a powerful (1st time) setup and all this will be coming from my old 2007 build.....I'm hoping this will last the next 5 years or more. Do you see any compatibility issues or any other before I pull the trigger?

I owe a lot to you for the advice/recommendations, and have referenced your rig (when doing comparisons etc..) in making the component choices. Thanks Mike for all the detailed info!!! Next week I'll be pulling the trigger and right now NewEgg seems to have everything I need (they also have a good return policy). I've looked at Micro Center as well, but somethings (i7) have to be bought at their store location and there's none in FL. Amazon seemed to be slightly higher in the pricing. Are there any other good vendors?

I do see a possible conflict between the fan and the memory chips. I went with the liquid cooler to avoid the fan fins hitting the memory chips fins. Do a google search for Noctua NH-D14 images and you can see how the fans fit in with the memory chips. Same with the Video card, is it going to fit in your case? My last build all came from Amazon, the previous build came from NewEgg. I went with Windows 8, in spite of dogging it here and in another forum. Most of the builds I've seen here are on Windows 7. I did have to upgrade a couple of non -DAW programs for Windows 8. I recommend looking up the items you are installing for your build on YouTube. It sure made my build go easier. Looks nice, BTW. -JJ

Thanks JJ for the tip. I'll check out the fitting of the NH-D14 and memory chips. Because I haven't had any experience and possibly a little fear of water cooling, I didn't explore that route. The good thing about this OC Formula board is that the heatsink around the cpu has full support of liquid cooling already pre-built....(see below). " This design wraps around the CPU socket but leaves plenty of room for large cooling solutions. The barbs are less than 0.5 inches in size at 0.375 inches. Depending on the size of the primary liquid loop you may need to use adapters to allow connection to the liquid cooled part of the Twin-Power cooling solution." Did you or do you have any issues with liquid cooling? Now, you got me intrigued about it and will do some research on it. I will be using a Full Tower case (my 1st) and it should be big enough for larger GPU's and whatever else right?

This was my first liquid cooled computer. I went through the installation video a couple of times before I installed it. My only concern was the pipes leaning against the video card, but I was able to loosely tied them away from the card with a tie wrap. Beyond that it has been flawless so far. I went with a full tower case. A little tight for my computer desk. I have to remove it to take the covers off, whereas the mid tower I could take the covers off while leaving it in the desk. I like the room in the case, though. -JJ

I looked into the liquid cooling thing, and that's a bit more work/maintennance than I really need for the type of useage. It looks like it can become a complete hobby in building a cooling rig...LOL. The NH-D14 is certainly a beast, but it will fit and it's just a fan that covers the ram sticks (which can be removed when replacing sticks).....a user with this board had built it here: http://hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1738712 Thanks JJ for pointing this out as I would've hated going through the headaches of replacing the cooler (if needed) and I appreciate a second pair of eyes.

AWW, shucks.... No problem. It just so happens that I just finished my build when you were planning your's. As far as liquid cooling goes there are a few different way's. 1. There are sealed pre-filled, sealed units like the H80i or the H100i which are easy to install. 2. Then there are the units that require the pumps, filling the reservoir, routing tubing and and that whole messy debacle. 3. Liquid Nitrogen....... Not for actual PC use. Mainly used in extreme OC'ing I opted for the first version. I had my PC OC'd to 4.4GHz, stable and highest temp was 74c average on all cores I have since lowered it to 4.2GHz with highest temp reaching 71c on one core the rest were no higher than 67c. Cooler = longer life but since the ****k chips are made for OC'ing I went with just a smidge. Mike

I'm not planning on doing any extreme OCing, but I'll put it through a few tests as this system is certainly ready for it :).....regarding the water cooling, most of the stuff I read were stuff like option 2, and that kind of discouraged me from getting it. I had read so many good reviews on the NH-D14, I ended up getting that.......but if it doesn't do the job, I'll definitely look into the H80i. I had a few minor changes (faultiness of too much researching:)) in my build and finally ordered the following: 1) MB - ASROCK_Z77_OC_Formula2) CPU - i7-3770k 3) RAM - G.SKILL_Ripjaws_X_Series (16GB - 2x8Gb sticks) 4) GPU - HIS-IceQ_Radeon_HD_78705) CPU Cooler - Noctua_NH-D146) SSD OS Drive - Samsung_840_Series_MZ-7TD250BW7) PSU - OCZ ZX Serries 850W Fully Modular Gold 8) Case - Rosewill THOR V2 Gaming Full ATX Tower (4 fans installed) 9) Mouse - Logitech G700 (13 button programmable gaming mouse) 10) Win 8 Pro 64 I'm just totally excited in being able to have a super-fast system (just take a look at what I've been working with for the past 6 yrs.....LOL!!) and hopefully, this new build will last me a long time. I even got an Asus 24" LCD monitor just to complete this build. (not sure why it's bold ) It should be here within the next few days.....did I say I was excited!!???

Not yet... I ordered through NewEgg and they seem to be shipping parts from 3-4 different locations. Some of them are arriving today and the rest should be here tomorrow.... I'll tell ya Mike, this whole project is just a total mental rush.....I'm even actually dreaming of the components and parts on this build....(I didn't think it would be this exciting). LOL!! I'll definitely keep you posted. I'm trying to sort out what's the best way to load all my VST's (some may only be 32 bit) into this new machine. I saved all the registration/authorisation numbers, so I suppose I'll just have to go to each vendor site and download the 64bit vesions? For the moment, I was planning on removing my Projects HDD & Samples HDD from the older machine and just installing them in the new build. Are there any things that I should be looking out for in this transition? TIA,

Yeah I was all antsy like that too. And it is very satisfying building your own PC and having it work all nice and smooth. The way I did it was just to install everything fresh. A pain....yes but on the bright side I did some major house cleaning and got rid of stuff I even forgot I had installed. As far as swapping HD's. Sorry I can't help. My old rig was a laptop with an external HD so I just plugged that in and dropped the files where I wanted them. Enjoy the build. Mike

Install the OS and everything but the DAW software. Get the OS updated done, hardware configured. Then add the drives to the computer and install the DAW. I fat fingered on an installation and wiped out my data drive. Now I disconnect everything except the drive I install on. Once I get the OS and drivers installed and updated, I plug in the rest of the drives. -JJ

Thanks JJ......will do. After the drivers and OS installation, I was planning on running SiSoft. If all goes well, I'll then start adding all the other drives/software. Would this be a recommended order in doing things? There's a slight delay in my build due to a mistake I made when ordering my cooler (NH-D14). I mistakenly ordered the se2011 model...........the difference is only in the mounting system which fits the LGA 2011 board (my board is socket 1155). However, Noctua's customer service is really good and they're shipping me a free mounting kit (at least now I'll have PWM speed control when having the se2011). In the meantime, I went ahead and also ordered the NZXT IU01 internal USB expansion (thanks to Mike's recommendation ). ......to be continued....

Yeah, I only installed, well lets say 'connected' the OS drive first, went about it the way JJ stated and ran a stability check and memtest. Then I connected the remaining drives and installed my drivers, software and whatnot. Then ran more tests. Then played with some lite OC'ing and ran many tests. Mike

What did you use for the stability test? And how did you get the color in your signature? -JJ

I seem to like AIDA 64 for my testing (mostly because I'm used to it) but Scott from ADK recommends Sisoft Sandra burn in. Both work well. And in the user control panel, under signature while typing in your sig you'll see at the top of the dialog box the letter "A". Next to that is a little pull down arrow that will allow you to choose a font color. EDIT: I just looked....Seems that the option is no longer there. hmmm. Mike

chefmike8888 Done yet? Mike
Done!!! It's so pleasant to work on a machine that's quick, snappy, smooth, and efficient (I think it boots up to Windows in something like 6 seconds...WOW!! (my old machine took about a minute or 2 to boot)). I'm really happy with this build and now looking forward to using it in X2/games. I had to return the HIS graphics card as it was DOA, but will be replacing it with an identical card. I'm currently going through the tedious process of installing all my software and trying to keep everything organized/clean. Thanks to everyone who helped and advised me (especially Mike) through this process, I truly appreciate it.....(I'm sure I'll run into some issues in the future and will ask you guys again :)).

Congrats. Completing your first build is a great feeling for sure. I am still amazed at the boot up speed and load times of programs. Enjoy Mike

WTH is a ****k chip? It's one that's intended for overclocking and made easy for the user to do so by altering some parameter in the BIOS settings. The "k" at the end of the model number distinguishes it from the regular version of the same chip.
