Here is a snippet of some lifelong friends of mine who have a killer bluegrass group doing a cover of Jimi's "Are You Experienced".  You don't have to buy...just listen to the sample.  And yes...they ARE experienced:-)

I've got the Are You Experienced? guitar training DVD where what's left of Jimi's band tries to describe how to play the songs from the CD of the same name.  It's actually quite funny at times when they attempt to make it sound like Jimi thought about music theory.  There's one part where they say "..then Jimi alternates with 6th chords" when you know darn well that he only hammered his fingers down because it sounded good!

I love the Buzzcocks!  Everybody's happy nowadays! Most melodic punk ever.

Agreed 100% Bo, and they're still playing to this day.

I've been meaning to create a newer, slimmer one...  let me work on that.  I'll avoid enlarging phallic symbols for those of you covertly posting from work, 'K?

For a "punk" band, they sure turned out some melodic sing-a-longs.

Bo, have you listened to any 'Magazine'?

They were a band formed by ex-Buzzcocks member Howard Devoto.

They did some interesting stuff, but will always be remembered for the marvellous Shot By Both Sides

Rather fittingly for this thread, Radiohead did a rather shabby cover version of it

Before I say...I hope I don't offend anyone.

I've never heard anybody do a Jimi Hendrix tune that I liked. If Jimi did it....couldn't
be done better. JMO so be nice. :)

Agreed.

The best version of Jimi Hendrix I have ever heard, would be in Guru Guru's "Kan Guru" and "Dance of the Flames" albums ... I always thought that Kan Guru was the best Hendrix ever done without Jimi.

The only other one I thought was amazing, was listening to Terje Rypdal in the album "EOS" with David Darling, which is, for all intents and purposes an album of chamber music with electric guitar and electricized bass.

The only other one I can think of right off, is Toni McPhee on the album "Crosscut Saw", but I think that buzzsaw effect with the guitar will get Bapu really sick! And Strummy figuring out how to do it right away, too!

Not sure Jimi can be exactly copied since so much of it was a feeling, and not just the music.

As a wise Guy once stated from his holy chapala ... none of the hits, none of the time ... prevents you from becoming just another turkey in the middle of all the other turkeys!

Rain

Reminded me - The Cure did a cover of Purple Haze. Not sure I'd have forgiven that one if they weren't one of my all-time favorite bands.

So did Tangerine Dream on the "220 Volt Live" album ... it was one of their encore pieces at the time. Edgar Froese has always said that Jimi Hendrix was one of his favorite musicians. It's a pretty good version all things considered without the lyrics.

I have to look them up.  I loved the Buzzcocks so Magazine has to be cool.

And Marquee Moon/Television - awesome.  I got to go to CBGBs a couple times.  5 bands in 5 hours!  All original.

Steve this'll surprise you, as you know that I'm a huge Stranglers fan but their cover of "Summer in the City" is IMHO atrocious.

Easily the worst song they've ever recorded and probably the worst cover I've ever heard to.

It's on "Written in Red" which wasn't their finest moment.

If you haven't heard any of the more recent stuff Suite XVI is well worth a listen. I think Relentless from that album is up there with their best songs ever, maybe even the best. I can't find a link for "Summer in the City" (probably just as well) but Relentless is HERE

They are touring again next March, I'll be at Cambridge on the 8th and maybe another if I can get the time.
