guitarhackerHorse Lipps and String Driven Thing. Sad ... really sad. Horslips ... is a very strange mix of the ethnic music in northern England done with rock instruments. And it was very tough listening for most people even at the station and for me. But hearing it today ... you have to have balls and guts to do that! and do it well. String Driven Thing ... gave us Graeme Smith that came from another McKendree Spring, a well known band that was doing some pop music. String Driven Thing's first album was a veritable FU to rock musicians ... with "Song without a drummer" and I think there was another take as "band without a drummer", which kinda tells you that the pop thing was getting tired already! "The Machine That Cried" I have not heard in its entirety. The next generation of the band is very good, but is also more pop oriented than otherwise and nothing like the original at all. The album with the racket cover I can not name a whole lot ... but the other album with the toothpast cover (kinda way too suggestive for the ladies here, but very Bapu'esque!) ... had a couple of very nice things. Josephine and the massive blow out Tympany for the Devil. Out of this you can do a massive trio of pieces ... Graeme Smith did a blow out with McKendree Spring that was a crowd pleaser, and then he did "Tympany for the Devil" with String Driven Thing and then ... you HAVE to side these with Curved Air's original Vivaldi with Cannons, and then the Live version of Vivaldi with more cannons, so we can blow out the constipated Bapu that was here earlier not being nice! ..... I have not a single album that is considered "worse" in my collection, CD or LP ... because it doesn't exist. I have too much love and respect for music to think that anyone's ditty or pop song is crap ... or they would all be crap and cheap music for me. So, I learned from Bapu that all music is great. End of story. And as you can tell, I even know my String Driven Thing and Horslips!

57Gregy Worst quality- a bootleg live Neil Young album. Sounded like it was recorded with a cassette deck from row 188. Worst studio albums- the second Frijid Pink album (Defrosted), followed br the first Frijid Pink album. Surprise!!!!! The best things I have ever heard ... were in bootlegs! The best album, ever, was one that I let go when I was broke and hurting ... and to this day I regret having let it go. Led Zeppelin's double Boot called "Live on Blueberry Hill" is a 4 sided masterpiece of energy that doesn't stop. It's between LedZ 2 and 3 and it is unreal ... and I do not know a single musician that would not want to have one night in their whole life ... where the music just flowed and ran ... non-stop ... "... good evening ... nice to be back ... booommm ... (right from the start) ... " Maybe you ought to try it! Lastly, for a full year plus during the first and second Dark Side of the Moon tours, Pink Floyd played 3 long cuts ... that did NOT become the next PF album, which gives you the immediate idea that the record company wanted something closer to DSOTM, which their next album WAS ... and it had two massive finger sticking to the record company/ies ... Welcome to the Machine, and of course Have a Cigar, sung by the one man that knew how to intone irony and hippocrisy into a set of words that made sense and showed you the ropes! Mr. Roy Harper. It took PF almost 37 years to release those in their original form. "Raving and Drooling" was, by far, one of the very best "space rock" pieces ever written ... but it was brought into a piece in their album that was not even close or half as good as the original. "You Gotta Be Crazy" became Dogs ... and the live version on the famous bootleg from Anaheim Stadium is better than the album versions 100 times over ... not to mention that you get to hear Roger scream some nice obscenities to a couple of fans ... which changed the security for the next night! You either love the music and the feeling of being in it and a part of it, or you don't. The Lou Reed thing was a very well known finger to the record company, because he owed them 2 albums and he was no longer the "famous" hit maker that had been there earlier. The story still is that the record company didn't give a damn, and decided that the person that was going to look stupid and bad, was Lou himself. And I have to agree. The record company probably got even for the loads of money that Lou walked off with they never had a chance to recover!

Not quite Pedro. Horslips were actually an Irish band, and a lot of their pieces were based on traditional Irish jigs and reels. One of their famous tunes 'Dearg Doom' is based on a trad. tune called 'O'Neills March' I was looking for the word Irish, but was not sure they were from there or not ... and used ethnic instead. The Tain ... is an excellent album, but I doubt that mos trock'n'roll folks can stand it. The only oddity by this band was when they did that Christmas album ... that for some reason, just did not sound right at all! This is difficult stuff for me to talk about in this forum. A lot of these things are very "special" and "different" and they were rather important at the time, and helped make credence of folk/rock and other things that both Steeleye Span and Fairport Convention were already hitting on. So seeing things a bit more electric, and with a conviction that kinda said ... "we're irish .. they aren't" would match the time a lot better than the likes of Chieftains, and other more traditionallists playing a lot of those pieces. I happen to like those "hybrid" cultural mixes ... thus this culture with electric stuff is neat, that one is just as neat, and that one over there on the other side of the world is just as neat ... but it is not something that most "conventionally" taught musical folks can understand, or always appreciate. Your ear is not tuned to how the notes and accents are used in that example and many others ... and to me, that is where the beauty lies. Someone in Spain is not going to use that Fender Strat the same way you do. That person in Dublin might not either. That person in Helsinki will use it differently. That person in Tokyo will use it differently. So will the person in Brazil. Or South Africa ... but somehow we expct them to not be good music or musicians because it doesn't sound like Eric Clapton or one of our favorites. And that is my only beef sometimes about the appreciation of music ... we have to appreciate all of them ... not just one ...! Lastly ... a joke from the Peter Michael Hamel book "From Music to the Self" ... there is this guy, playing an instrument and he is playing the same not over and over and over again ... but he is singing and saying all the time ... I got it ... I got it ... and most folks around him are saying ... got what? ... and the point is that you will never get anything when you are tuned to YOUR ears only ... so the joke that would be on him, falls on you for not having the musical perception except for what you know ... and what you "don't" know is out there and waiting for you to discover? ... you decide!

I always had a soft spot for Horslips and The Tain, and liked the idea of a concept album based on a battle fought over a prize bull! If you like Horslips, try the tremendous Scots band Wolfstone. http://www.wolfstone.co.uk/ Your ear is not tuned to how the notes and accents are used in that example and many others ... and to me, that is where the beauty lies. I agree. Check out a beautiful lady called Julie Fowlis, http://www.juliefowlis.com/ she sings in a Gaelic dialect from the Hebrides, and can reduce me to tears even though I have no idea what she's singing about.

Now you know why things like Alan Stivell are so wonderful for me ... the mix of everything, Bapu and kitchen sink is just what the doctor ordered for this idiot! I agree that not all bootleg recordings are bad, but the sound quality of this particular concert album was atrocious. Neil's performance was fine... when you could hear it above the crowd noise.

Moshkiae The Tain ... is an excellent album, ! A real classic in my book. Darag Doom still gets played at many an Irish sporting event. If you are in to that type of music, from that era, check out Scotland's finest - Five Hand Reel.

Does that mean you'll listen to some of my stuff? I have no issues listening to anything ... but some folks might not like my reaction or comments, in which case, sometimes it is best not to ask. I tend to not compare music and decide this one is not good because that one is ... and this is not something that most musicians are comfortable with unless they know the value of their inside and inner expression at which point they know the difference. Most musicians I ever met do not ... and are not professionals either. Guess who the most professional and open folks were that I ever talked to? ... the Gong folks ... and intelligent, well versed in literature and other arts, too!
