Another trick you can do is to set your guitar pick up heights while running your guitar into SONAR ..If you want to  you can have SPAN on a track /channel
FWIW you don' t really even need SPAN  , yet it is a good way to balance your guitars tone ...
example if you hit a low string and your track red lines over 0 Db you can set the pick up for more tonal balance between both the treble and the Bass  .....I do this stuff all the time ...including setting up my pick up combinations of more than one pick up ...
There you have it I just gave you a thousand dollars worth of advice ..keep you eye on the mail box the bill is on the way
just kidding no charge

all the best,

Kenny

That's a GREAT idea!

I picked up on that as well and agree.

A good set up and adjusting the pick up height is essential in getting the best playability and tone out of a guitar. Like Kenny, I have gotten great deals on used guitars from people who think that their is something wrong with the guitar, when all it needs is a set up, the pickups adjusted, or some work on the electronics. With Strats and single coils, you get those unpleasant wolf tones when the pickups are too close to the strings. Kenny's post is dead on.

When I started contemplating my 15th guitar (also known as a "Half-Wilson") is when I decided to go down the custom path where one guitar basically took the place of six (I liked the electronics on one, the neck radius on another, the scale on a third, the shape on a fourth, the fretboard from a fifth and, finally, the pickups of a sixth!).

My goal was to have all of my customs feel the same (like you do with good golf clubs) but accomplish different things (Classic rock tones, modern tones, trem/no trem, versatility - the Line 6 Variax guts are a good example).  If my life (and body?) hadn't gone pear shape, I would have had all I needed with the three custom guitars and then I could start on other types I was interested in (baritones, VI style bass, "normal" bass).

Since I don't play live (and tend to need to loop record a few dozen times to get passages right) I don't need to worry about damage or having a backup.

Soon I will get two of my three back.  Then we'll see where I go next!

"Half-Wilson" that one cracked me up

Hey Craig , I was gonna post a long winded thing over here but I decided against it ...
The short story is for many years I only used to own one guitar ...I usually owned and played pristine highly desirable Vintage guitars ...I also kept a beater nylon string to practice scales on ...
What I used to do back then was buy a vintage guitar , play the hell out of it and then flip it to get another Vintage Guitar ...
That approach was rinse and repeat for many years .I can lay claim to having owned some super desirable guitars that I will never own again unless I get Lucky and meet a Lady from The Single Billionaire Women Looking for a Pet Guitar Player Dating site  I recently joined Yeah I know don't hold my breath

Any way having those guitars at the time was a nice chapter of my life . Yet , those days are over for me ...it was nice while it lasted
Once the vintage guitar market went through to roof , I started playing newer guitars & guitars I picked up used ..
Mostly work horses and players it is very rare that I will trade or sell a guitar ...it took me 30 years to get a Gibson Les Paul again after I foolishly traded away the Gibson 57 Reissue 3 Pick up i had ...lesson learned

As far as the Wilson inventory goes probably the best Half Wilson Tag would describe the bulk of the guitars I have had and played for over the past 30 years ....
The other half of The Wilson Tag is all guitars I have picked up along the way that fill a sonic need or a desire to own a certain model that fits a genre of music I want to play in ...
I could probably show up at Guitar Center w a shopping cart full of my other guitars and leave with one really nice guitar after they get done with me  the thing is that's not how I roll

any way nice talking w you ....

Kenny

Matt , Mike & Greg ,

I'm glad you guys got something useful out of my long winded post  on setting up guitar pick up heights
Mikes point about working with the electronics is also a very good tip . At the very least spraying out the potentiometers and switches or even changing them can also make a big difference .

all the best ,

Kenny
