Might not have been the best example Starise...it's still just turning one knob if you're meaning Open G (blues)...just sayin'...
What Open G tuning are you talking about?

To me, Open G = D G D G B D
Yes, that's the Open G blues.
Drop D is DADGBD so only one tuner to twist the way I see it. A down to G on the 5th.   Am I missing something?

Aw.....yes I am....the first string....silly me.
Well still no step for a stepper....I'm only a few cents of not needing a reference pitch. So I agree that kids learning with a guitar that tunes itself could miss out...possibly.

OK, you meant going from Drop D (or Double Drop D) to Open G, not Standard to Open G.

I was hoping you had a new tuning variation I hadn't heard/thought of for me to dabble with on my Trilogy multiple tuning bridge doohickey.

I'm at work and tried finding info about a new tuner...I don't remember if I bookmarked it at home either.

The best I recall it was a spring tension set-up and integral part of a tremelo. When the strings went out of tune from using it, it put them back in tune.
Maybe I can't find it because it's not available yet. Anyway, that help with tuning I like the idea of.

If I did mark it I'll post it here.

man I need an auto spell checker more than a tuner. geeze.

Spacey
I always thought drop D was tuning the 6th string down from E to D.

Goes to show you how little I really know.

BTW - Why are we talking about open G Strings yet there are no photos?

Wow...this tuning thing got crazy fast...let's start from the beginning..

It started with auto tuning is good because with ONE turn of a knob one can go from Drop D to open G. (unspecified open G)

DADGBE (Drop D) to DGDGBD ( Open G - and I assumed he meant "blues")

I then stated ONE knob would still do it without an auto tune - I was thinking of only the 5th string needing changing and overlooked the 1st string needing to drop from E to D also. Thereby requiring the turning of TWO knobs (or tuners lol).

Hope we're getting in tune to the straight an narrow...whatever the hell that means.

Personally if there was that much time restraint for tuning...I'd find a new gig. And besides that, Many tunings sound like hell without changing string gauges...IMO...so I'd have guitars set-up for that and if I wasn't allowed time to switch guitars....geeze...I'd find a new gig.

Now this is kinda hard to do while I'm at work with multiple tasks...leave some room for errors...

No offense intended

I don't do open tunings much.  I used to play Midnight Rider - dropping the E to D on a Martin.  Heart Shaped Box (Nirvana) seems to use an E tuned down to D.

There was some other tuning I used to use playing Little Martha.  I don't know what that was.

None taken.
Just I goofed starting out and probably shouldn't be trying to think today.

I've played many tunes with Drop D and use to play Little Martha too...I can't remember the tuning...have the transcription at home.

Personally I'm not smart enough to attempt multiple tunings and don't have the desire to set guitars up for them. I'll stick with trying to learn standard.

I sure have fun with open G (reso) on the lap steel I made....but I'm not good at it and end up making noise.

I like to play around with tunings when I have the time to do so. The nice thing about the new Line 6 JTV guitars is that you can go into the software and make any tuning you want to make aside from the drop D open G etc....the only real catch to it is that the guitar has to be in tune to start with, and thats not really a catch for me.

I have played around a little with a cut capo too. I liked the alternative stuff you can do with that.
