X1 installation broke my metronome
does anyone know how to fix it? neither audio nor midi metronome work after x1 installation. I was using audio fine in 8.5 before the x1 installation, now it doesn't work in either program.

I really need to fix this problem. I have tried reinstalling X1 and that did not solve it. does anyone have any other suggestions?

I've had issues too with the metronome too, make sure in CV in the bus section you have a bus set-up for your metronome, In my 8.5.3 it was automaticly set up in the bus section , with X1 , in my bus section in I have no metronome set up I have to route it myself..

The metronome stopped working for me once or twice, but loading a new project using the default X1 Normal.cwp fixed it, and it started working again. A number of users use customized templates, maybe you are one. If so, try loading the default X1 normal template to see if the metronome starts working again. Other than that, I'm sure you set the Metronome output correctly in the Metronome bus, as you are one of the more knowledgeable SONAR users here, so I can't think of anything else to suggest. For me, in X1, the Metronome is already set up as a Bus routed to the Master bus.

Too weird. Working fine here. I did have to go into preferences however and set it up the first time.

thanks for the suggestions, guys. djj - in X1 it is still set up in my bus section as it was in 8.5, so that's not the problem. I did verify that the metronome is routed to the metronome bus. thomas - good try, but no, that's not it either. I used the normal template and I get the same results. the odd problem is that I can open 8.5 with a project I know the metronome was working in before I installed x1 and it no longer works in 8.5 either. something about the x1 installation caused the metronome to stop working all together. middleman - nope, checked that as well and it was still set up like it was in 8.5. and 8.5 is still set up correctly but no go. I even tried the MIDI one in both programs but no go there either. anyone more suggestions?

just to give more information: the metronome bus no longer has meters moving either. there's no sound going to it.

Have you got an external synth you can route it to? If so that may help narrow down whether it's the metronome not working or a routing issue somewhere.

Audio or MIDI metronome? General question: Where are the audio sample files for SONAR's metronome? Maybe the library got fried? just thinking outloud. Good luck. best regards, mike

Karl, good suggestion, but can you tell me how to do that? I can't figure out how to send it to a hardware synth. in the metronome options, I can choose the output of the AUDIO metronome, but only my soundcard outputs and the buses of that particular project are listed. for the MIDI metronome, there are no output options available for me to choose. Mike - good thinking and maybe you're onto something here. during installation, sonar asked where I kept my configuration files (like it does with every installation). the oldest installation on this machine was S6 and that's where I pointed S8 & S8.5 when their installations asked, so that's where the metronome wave files are (I looked). but they are there - so why wouldn't X1 use them there if they use everything else there like the INS and drum map files from that folder?

Go to Preferences->Project->Metronome. Towards the bottom half of the window under the MIDI note heading there's an option to change the port. Select the port number you want to use there. Of course it would be a little easier if it listed MIDI device names rather than port numbers but it's another of Sonar's quirks. BTW you obviously need to check MIDI note towards the top of the same window. I use an external drum machine for my metronome so it's definitely doable. I don't think I done anything other than that.

duh - sorry, I found it just as you responded. ok - that's not working either. I sent it to my synth using both MIDI port or USB port (I have both connected) and neither is sending data to the synth. I also verified this by opening MIDIox to make sure my synth WOULD send data, and monitored the OUTPUT of MIDIOX from sonar going into the synth, but there was no output data being sent.

One of the odd ball things that was happening to me before I did a fresh install of W7/X1 was my midi device settings would keep defaulting back to none. You have versions of Sonar on your system going back to S6?! Wow! I'd consider myself lucky that this is all you've had go wrong. :)

having multiple versions has never been a problem. they coexist nicely under normal circumstances. my midi devices are staying put - so that's not the problem, but thanks for the suggestio.

There must be some sort of problem with the audio file that the metronome uses. I've never used the audio option so have very little experience with it. I think I recall seeing somewhere an option for the audio file used by the metronome but can't remember where I read/saw that. I might even have dreamt it. If I find out I'll let you know obviously. On the bright side at least it's narrowed the problem down a little.

Ok now I fell even more stupid than normal. The options as you've probably noticed are in the same window. If it helps my metronome audio files are located here - C:\ProgramData\Cakewalk\SONAR X1 Producer\Metronome on my system. 8.5 seems to have it's own copy of that as well. I've also just checked and my metronome does work with the audio option. Only other things I can think of are routing? something muted or soloed somewhere?

no, nothing muted or soloed. I can open a new project using the normal template that comes with the program in either X1 or in 8.5 and the metronome will not work in either one - but it DID work before my X1 installation.

I know you probably already have but I'm scratching my head here. You've checked the output is set to a valid buss in the metronome dialogue box?

yes, I have even changed it to MASTER and to the MAIN OUTPUTS of my soundcard directly and tried those, just in case. none of them work.

I would suggest doing a system restore, but when I was on Win XP, system restore worked terrible for me in XP, and you probably want to keep X1 on your system, so system restore is probably not what you want to do. Did you have a image backup of your system before you installed X1? I installed X1 after a fresh install of Windows 7 64bit, and I installed 8.0 and 8.5 after I installed X1. They all are working without any noticeable issue (minus the known bugs.) I hate to say it, but I think you're in need of a fresh install of windows.

thomas - no I don't have an image. system restore might work, but I really don't want to do a windows install at this point. I simply don't have time for that unless the problem is greater than the metronome. I can always put up a click track (and that's what I've done as a work around) but I prefer to have the metronome working.

I never use it but with several metronome file folders for different versions of the host in the same place, how can you check that the right file is being loaded? I ask this because you had activity but no sound then no activity and no sound. So if you loaded an 8.5 referenced file would it it be looking for 8.5? Etc. With all the similar names involved? ...

thanks chuck, but I think I've covered that one. craig - that's what I don't know. it may be a registry entry or something because there aren't any settings in sonar that I can find which point the metronome to a particular path.

Beagle, You said you do the migrate using the 'oldest' Sonar install (Sonar 6?) -- I've always used the most recent one when I migrate (8.5.3 in my case) as it takes the most recent info and migrates it. So you might want to try that?
