X1C - Feeling pretty hopeless at this point.

Well, it was worth a shot...X1C seems every bit as good as X1B for me - I have crashed with a SonarPDR.exe error twice in the first 3 minutes after installing it.

I opened Sonar, closed Sonar. "Sonar has encountered a problem..."

I opened Sonar, closed the default project. "Sonar has encountered a problem..."

We are over 8 months into the product cycle now for X1 and I still have an utterly useless product--I can't open old projects or create new ones with it.  Yes, I know --everyone can now chime in about how X1 on YOUR machine is SO rock solid and stable (like mine was with 8.5, 8.0, 7, 6, 5, 6, 4, 3, 2, and 1 - my luck was bound to run out).

Sigh.  Hopefully it hasn't screwed up my 8.53 installation, which is still my DAW of choice.

    Out of curiosity, are you using any of Panup's or other mods with X1?

    Nope - straight install ( clean uninstall of every CW product followed by a reinstall of X1 and patches with Tech support's assistance).

    Man, I don't know what to tell you as I can do what you're describing without issue. Sorry, man. I'm on Win7, though.

    Has it been a long time since you last installed XP?

    I would suggest a full disk wipe and XP reinstall. Painful and time consuming, but it solves all kinds of problems, especially concerning sensitive apps like SONAR.

    Unfortunately, I don't have anything to go on - it is literally the same 3-y.o. PC  that is (still) running 8.5.3 just fine.  It seems like these other factors would impact my other audio apps like Wavelab 7, Live 8, Sonar 8.5.3, but only X1 is affected.

    I wouldn't go through the painful and time-consuming re-install and reauthorization of all of my apps and plugins in order to reload XP 32 bit - that is the thing I am dreading and what is holding me back from switching to 64-bit Win7.  I will upgrade to an entirely new machine when that happens.  Until then, it appears I am unable to switch to X1.

    I'm on Windows 7...I am running Sonar 8.5.3, Sonar X1 32 and Sonar X1 64...no issues. I agree...re-installing on an old OS would be pointless unless you just can't afford to upgrade.

    I'm just wary of over-enthusiastic geeks being a little too keen to help.

    The last one that offered to do that for me, I did end up having to re-install the entire OS, but only after I had to endure him spending 4 hours giving me brain damage first.

    It's just me, I've been hurt before, take no notice.

    My humble suggestion to chauncey would be to spend a little time on the phone with Cakewalk Customer support first, I'd probably come knocking on your door begging for help when all else had failed though.  So don't take it personally, I might need you one day...

    I really sympathize, I hate it when stuff like that happens. Unfortunately there are so many "moving parts"...recently I just about went crazy when the Recycle bin stopped working properly: When you opened it, there were no file names, and it showed zero files. I found this out the hard way, because I couldn't recover something I really needed to recover...

    It turned out to be the result of a CodeMeter dongle being attached to a USB port. Seriously. If I removed the dongle, everything worked perfectly. A dongle? USB port? Recycle bin? Is that logical?!?

    I hate to be a downer, but your problem is probably something as totally off-the-wall and weird...like the time a couple VSTis wouldn't work in any program on my computer, and it was an outdated graphics driver.

    Well, it was worth a shot...X1C seems every bit as good as X1B for me - I have crashed with a SonarPDR.exe error twice in the first 3 minutes after installing it.

    I opened Sonar, closed Sonar. "Sonar has encountered a problem..."

    Have you eliminated the possibility that this is a rogue plugin?

    Star Tekh - I've copied and pasted some of your suggestions from other posts just to have offline.  You do have a lot to offer and I hate to see comments like the above because it just makes one not want to help or suggest.
    Let it roll man...

    Chaunceyc- Sorry to hear the update didn't help your situation. CW Tech support has always helped me with issues, but they were fairly easy ones unlike what your dealing with.  My troubleshooting method is to isolate all hardware from the system. Then add each device back in until the problem shows up.

    Hi chaunceyc

    I know you probably wont want to hear this but  XP SP3  is nowhere near as good a DAW operating system as Windows7 X64 SP1 - seriously, its not even on the highway that takes you to the car park of the ball park that is W7 X64SP1

    From your signature, all your hardware has W7 X64 drivers.

    => backup everything

    => finish off any exisiting  8.5.3  projects *
    => grab Win 7 X64

    => before doing a full format / clean / fresh install go into your BIOS and set the SATA
    to AHCI  [ if not already done ] - if its currently on IDE and you change it to AHCI and re-boot your exisiting system, you will get a BSOD, so dont freak out if you see it

    => install Win 7 X64 SP1

    => Load all your drivers - DAW hardware and Intel system drivers  [ chipset / matrix / ahci ] - try both, but use ASIO instead of WDM if you cant "tell" the difference

    => install your software and Sonar X1C  X64

    => start a brand new / ground-up project in X1C -  * opening "old"  8.5.3  projects in X1C is not ideal unless they are very basic projects - the UI and program has changed too-much under the skin

    I'd be amazed if it didnt operate beautifully  [  not withstanding whatever remaining non-system-specific bugs still remain unfixed ].

    Hope this helps.

    Why?  (I notice you don't offer any reasons, or alternative advice to help him).

    Chauncey is seeing something that is clearly system-specific, so I suspect he will have to do a clean drive wipe and reinstall anyway... Timboe's suggestion - to go to Win7 - has as good a chance as any to fix the problem.

    Hi Chauncey,

    If you do decide to do a fresh install, I would suggest creating a slip-stream installation CD. There are a few web sites that have downloaded all the patches for Windows XP SP3 and the latest Direct X drivers, and lumped them in to one compressed file. Copy your XP install CD to a folder on your desktop, follow the instructions that come with the slip stream files (it's VERY easy), burn a new Slip-Streamed XP Installation CD, and install from it. That way you don't have to download all the updates one by one from Microsoft's web site, which is the real problem with reinstalling XP. You can also include the SATA drivers so you don't have to use F6, on your slip-stream CD. Sweet eh? :)

    Slipstream CD's are not illegal. There are instructions on making your own from Microsoft.

    I noticed that my system ran remarkably better when I did the install from a slip-stream CD. I'm assuming because none of the old junk from the initial install then updates were there, and my registry wasn't as cluttered.

    The other thing is make sure your BIOS on your Mobo is updated, as well as your audio card and video card before you go through the trouble of a fresh XP install.

    As for AHCI mode, don't mess with it in XP. The only benefit is you will be able to remove your HDD's without powering down like a USB Thumb drive. I'm not even sure what the benefit to it is in Windows 7. I've ran it both ways and saw no improvement. Actually, I didn't like it because my HDD showed up as a removable drive and that just bugs the heck out of me for some reason?

    XP SP3 is every bit as solid as Windows 7 IMO. It doesn't have as pretty an interface as Windows 7, and it's not 64 bit, but you have to ask yourself, have you ever been hindered by only having 4GB in XP? If not, I don't really see the point in forcing yourself to upgrade.

    Good luck with this.

    I have to disagree. XP seems pretty flakey compared to Win7. In my experience - it boots slower, crashes more often, has inferior driver handling, etc. Of course - YMMV.

    I can honestly say I have had less crashes in XP related to audio card drivers, than I have in Windows 7.

    There's no reason Chauncey should be persuaded to upgrade to Windows 7 to fix X1. It should run perfectly fine in XP, but I do agree he probably needs to do a fresh install of XP.

    Well I know I wasn't trying to persuade anyone to run Win7 and I don't deny or question your own personal experience with your DAW(s). I'm just relating my experience of XP vs Win7. It always pains me a bit to see people running XP on modern hardware. It's just not as good at memory management and multi-threading, driver handling, etc. It's more than just "prettier".

    FWIW: I can say that I (and a fair number of other Cakewalkers) would not run XP at this point. Not on a new-ish machine. For me I can say unequivocally that I've had far more crashes and bizarre behavior with XP than with Win7. Over the years, this encompasses probably multiple dozens of computers over multiple dozens of SONAR installs with tons of different hardware and tons of different usage scenarios. So while every machine is different and your particular environment is just that (the whole YMMV thing) I stand by my own experience.

    But of course this is all beside the point. The question is why is this system crashing. X1 does work with graphics hardware in a different manner than 8.5. It could be exposing a problem. 8 months is a long time not to have a working product. We do have free support. Considering that I know of no other user or machine that exhibits this problem I would suggest very strongly that the OP put in a call to support. That doesn't mean of course that we can't continue to trouble-shoot here.

    Brandon is right - but not just because he is agreeing with me.

    Putting all the other kernel / system changes aside from XP to Vista/Win7 [ and there are  000's ]   the audio "foundation" / "kernel"  in Vista/Win7 was re-written from the ground up and was finally "perfected" in Vista SP2 - a key part of this was how audio streams at very low latencies were " compartmentalized " from the video streams.

    In terms of audio stability, you will see  no  difference between  Vista X64 SP2  and  Windows 7 X64  [ Win 7 SP1 add's *nothing* to audio, but does make Win 7 even snappier ]

    Given we all   [seem]  to agree that a full-clean o/system re-install is imperative for situations like this, why even think about bothering with re-loading XP when Win 7  [ or Vista SP2 ]  is light-years better for a DAW.

    I'm not claiming to be in the same league as someone like Jim R.   [studiocat]  when it comes to this, but again, I'd be amazed if Jim didnt agree with what Brandon, JonD, mattox82, FreddieH and myself are suggesting / endorsing.

    From scratch to done, it will probably only take 3 - 4 hours to do and there's a very high probability that most / all  the stated problems will be fixed.

    Either way, all the best,

    Hi chaunceyc

    I know you probably wont want to hear this but  XP SP3  is nowhere near as good a DAW operating system as Windows7 X64 SP1 - seriously, its not even on the highway that takes you to the car park of the ball park that is W7 X64SP1

    From your signature, all your hardware has W7 X64 drivers.

    => backup everything

    => finish off any exisiting  8.5.3  projects *
    => grab Win 7 X64

    => before doing a full format / clean / fresh install go into your BIOS and set the SATA
    to AHCI  [ if not already done ] - if its currently on IDE and you change it to AHCI and re-boot your exisiting system, you will get a BSOD, so dont freak out if you see it

    => install Win 7 X64 SP1

    Tim

    Install only SONAR X1 x64 and don't open any old projects that are not made in X1.

    Excellent advice.

    How is upgrading your system from XP -> Windows 7 bad advice Bub?
