Since it looks like x4 will be coming out next september, I think I can afford to wait till they do the "get the X3 upgrade for cheap" routine, right before X4. That way I keep my Producer status and get my X2 bugs fixed (hopefully).
In the meantime a lot of beta testers will be working towards the X3a patch and I'd just as well leave that to them.
Everybody is entitled to decide how they want to spend their money. I'll just share my experience. I had a project started under X2. It was actually an accompaniment arrangement for a Bach piece that I played at my mother's funeral last week (I played the trombone over that synthesized arrangement.) It all came together nicely under X2. However, after the funeral I wanted to do a good mix of my part together with the accompaniment for family and friends to have as a dedication to mother's life. As the timing worked out, X3 arrived 2 days after the funeral. So I recorded under X3.
For similar projects in the past I usually did 3 or 4 takes and then used the erase tool to isolate the keepers. This time, because I knew Melodyne was available, I just did a quick take to warm up and set levels and then did two good takes. With the comping feature, it was amazingly easy and quick to merge this into one good take. I saved a lot of time here.
Then I bounced that to a good track and ran Melodyne on it. This ended up taking a lot longer than I expected, but that was because each little tweak with Melodyne ended up being such an improvement that I couldn't stop. I probably only adjusted 30-40 notes, but it was all so seamless, I got absorbed and paid no attention to the clock. I ended up creating a much better recording than I ever would have under X2. That's my bottom line. There is absolutely no doubt that I will make fewer mistakes and have a better end result using X3.
And I didn't have a single bug through this entire process, except for one cosmetic thing with comping tracks that we're looking at.
