My session drummer wouldn't load either. I did what Noel said and updated the Microsoft Redistributable. I got session drummer to load, but all my templates I made don't load with the routings I made.

vladasyn Also when I installed X3, I only installed part 1 to 4, did not install "Additional content", because I had SX2 installed. But now that I am thinking- I am not sure if I installed Additional content when I installed SPX2, as I was thinking- I have SPX1, but it was on my old computer. I thought- I heard- Sonar X3 does not offer SD any more and is not having it in installer because it was replaced by Addictive Drums, and we only have it because we had older versions. Is there SD in X3? Thank you.
Had to edit this... SD3 is included in X3. Is that the version of Session Drummer you are referring to? Try what djjhart posted and see if that helps.

mettelus #59 Sorry to jump in on this late. Please, do not mess with Win8 at all yet. Which version of IE are you running (open IE and select Help->About IE) Edit: The IESHIMS.DLL file is part of the install of IE 8 and above. Have you tried updating/reinstalling IE yet? Edit2: I just used DW on my machine and am also missing the "specified file" but my session drummer runs fine. I would first recommend what you mentioned above and re-install Session Drummer only. If that does not help, I would next suggest re-installing the X3 patch for the version you are running.
Already covered that (we are looping in circles ). Check #49 up to your post #59 which appears to have been bypassed. Thanks.

I still need some help to get session drummer 3 working. I have been through all the content of this thread: "X3 lost session drummer 64" and yet I still don’t see a concise explanation from cakewalk on how to properly fix the problem. I have re-installed session drummer 3 as suggested The dependency walker says I am missing IESHIMS.DLL ( but it is present in the right folder and I see that cakewalk don’t think this is an issue ) I have done all the VST re-scans Is there a definitive solution yet. I am using X3d studio version, Windows 8, 64 bit

Last time I checked was like Novemver- when ever 8.1 was released, and they said- they will NOT have 8.1 update for Fantom and V-Synth GT. Now they have some driver for Fantom, but not V-Synth GT, and V-Synth has Audio as well as MIDI... I also did not hear from Yamaha- I need midi driver for Motof XS for 8.1. But I will have to check with everybody else- I have 195 VSTs (according to Sonar Scan). I am afraid- I will have things disapearing like Session Drummer did. For example Komplete Ultimate- I dont even know what I supposed to have and what is there not working. EastWest Play worries me, Elastic player, I have large collection of software synths- I can not fight for each to disapear and not working like Session Drummer...

Just to round this off ( in response to Mettelus ), downloading the redistributable, copying the internet explorer dll to the system 32 folder and re-installing just session drummer3 sorted this out. I don't know which bit of this, or which combination, made the difference. Thanks for your input. Cakewalk ... please take note. We shouldn't have to mess around with dlls, dependency walkers, redistributable files , etc. just to make basic components work properly. I did pay for this upgrade to X3 and one of the selling points was session drummer 3.

I don't think we know that one way or the other at this point. It's happened to a number of people during the X3 cycle. It happened to me, and I always keep Windows up-to-date. For all we know it could be an issue with the X3 installer and the way it interacts with certain systems. I'm not jumping to any conclusions. It's obviously out of the ordinary though.

My comment was a direct response to the notion about not having to deal with redistributable code, and Dependency Walker and all of that. In several cases that I have participated in, folks had things out of date, and it was fixed by them running their maintenance or downloading specific dll modules. That is not to say that keeping Windows up to date will fix the world, but for those that do NOT have their systems up to current maintenance levels, or at least reasonably close, they should not complain about issues arising due to that lack of maintenance being done. If the maintenance had been run on a regular basis, then Dependency Walker might not have been needed at all. I am glad that set of issues got resolved. Bob Bone

Bob / StepD, I wasn't really planning on adding any more to this .. because the issue is fixed, at least for me. Just for clarity though, my problem occurred on a brand new Samsung laptop with a clean installation of Windows 8 ( updates included ). So I am pretty sure this is not an issue of keeping up to date with Windows maintenance. The dll in question ( IEHIMS.dll ) was in the correct folder for internet explorer to work correctly, but not for the session drummer 3 dll to find it ( as became apparent when I used the dependency walker ). This does suggest it is an issue for the installation of session drummer 3 then, and the other experiences in this long thread support this notion. I think it would be a mistake for Cakewalk not to investigate this further, hence I don't agree that it is not an issue for them.

I agree that the issue may need further looking into - perhaps some modifications to the installation instructions would help future folks avoid this - by indicating a need to have certain maintenance applied, IF that is what the issue is caused by. I would like to ask you to elaborate on your recent post. You indicated a brand-new laptop, with 'updates included', along with Windows 8. So, my question is, did you apply all outstanding Windows maintenance after you purchased the laptop, but prior to installing Sonar? It was not clear from my read of the post. The reason I ask is that a brand new computer may be missing a whole bunch of maintenance, as a sometimes lengthy period of time will exist between the date the laptop was imaged and the date it was purchased and brought to life. I frequently build computers for folks, and there are HOURS of maintenance needed after the initial install of Windows - even one with service packs pre-applied. So - if you don't mind expanding on your 'updates included' post, I would appreciate it. Thanks, Bob Bone

And to be honest 8.1 can be regarded as a service pack if this hasn't already been installed (although I notice some are avoiding this for some reason valid or otherwise, clearly lacking backup stategies ). There are also updates with windows every month. Most new computers I see are not up to date.

Well, Alex, I am for the moment holding off on 8.1, but it is not because of a lack of a backup strategy. For me, it is simply because I want to finish a couple of projects prior to evaluating reported issues with drivers and other potential 8.1 compatibility problems. So, it is more of a time issue than anything - for me. I will be setting up the backups and strategy for making that move when I get past those 2 projects, and will absolutely have a recovery strategy if things go South. I should be ready to move to 8.1 in a couple of weeks, at the most. If I have any issues prior to then, I will potentially seek to make the move sooner, depending on the evaluation of whatever issues arise. Bob Bone

Bob, I understand what you mean. My new laptop had gone through all the Windows updates before I installed X3, so although it was new it had a good period of time to settle down with all the various windows updates which I agree are many. This was all Windows 8 and I haven't moved to 8.1. Appreciate your continued interest.

Thanks for posting rloseven. This solution worked for me :) Interestingly I used the same X3 download on two PC’s W7 laptop and Session Drummer worked fine, W8 studio PC is where Session drummer wasn't installed correctly and wouldn’t show Session Drummer in X2 and X3. On both PC’s I firstly … Suspend my antivirus software prior to installing. (Norton 360) Installed SONAR 64bit versions only. Logged in as an administrator I had to do it twice because the first time I did not firstly remove the SD64 dll and after installing SD from X2 the X3.dll (1708 kb) file remained 2 nd time round I removed the .dll and X2 install loaded the X2 SD.dll (1568 kb) All is now good and can go back to work Yahoo!
I have empirical evidence this is true... (Bender told me!) It's important to note that once you've run the Microsoft redist (#34) and restarted Sonar X3 you must also do a rescan of the vst plugins (#4). This was the only way could get it working. Before the rescan it just continued to fail. I'm running Windows 8.1.
