X3 lost Session Drummer 64

Hello all,

I have a minor problem since I installed X3.  The first time I tried to insert Session Drummer into a project,  I received a message saying that it wasn't installed correctly.  I tried running X3's install again and checked only the Session Drummer to be installed.  After that, Session Drummer doesn't even show up in my VSTi list.  It is not in the excluded plugin list either.  The SessionDrummer64.dll is in my VST folder, but a rescan of VSTs just ignores it. I have tried deleting the VST folder for Sessiondrummer and reinstalling via the X3 install and still it doesn't work.  I downloaded a demo of Digital Performer and scanned my VST's with it and it says that Session Drummer can't find an entry point or something like that.  Short of completely uninstalling Sonar X3 and reinstalling, I can't think of anything else to do.  Anyone have any ideas ?

This is not a really big deal, since I like Addictive Drums much better.  But I just would like for it to work because it should.

Thanks
Ron Grossl

Um, yeah I would think so - especially since many of us have X2 projects with SD 64.
I will follow this thread, and won't upgrade until I see a resolution here.

SD3 64 bit is working fine for me.  One possibility is during X3 install, it tried to install SD3 again and it was a bad install.  I would try doing an advanced install of X3 again and skip everything except what is necessary to install SD3 again

First I would suggest following this KB article:
http://www.cakewalk.com/Support/kb/reader.aspx/2007013315

Let us know if this works.

Dan, I did follow that KB article and still, I have no Session Drummer.  Its like the dll isn't even in the VST folder, but it is.

I have already tried  dubdisciple's suggestion of an advanced install with only Session Drummer (actually about 4 times).   I do appreciate the suggestion, though.

If no one else has any suggestions, I think I will go ahead and uninstall Sonar X3 and reinstall to see if that fixes it.  One question about uninstalling X3,  should I de-activate Melodyne and re-activate it after X3 is installed ? or should I just leave it alone ?

Thanks

By the way ,pdarg,  I don't think this is anything to worry about as far as X3 is concerned.  I am the only person that I know of that is having this problem and I'm sure we would have heard if others were having the same problem.  I think something just got messed up either in the download or when I was installing it.  You know how installs go sometimes.  Some little byte gets changed somehow and it messes stuff up.  I am going to reinstall X3 later this evening and I will let you know if it fixes everything.

maybe check the folders the vst scan is occuring and check that against where SD3 is actually installed.  I ran into a problem like that once where I had installed X1 and X2 so many times I had remnants all over the place and it caused issues.

Agreed, make sure that the .dll is actually in the place that you are scanning.

Yes, it is in the ProgramFiles/Cakewalk/VSTplugins  with all my other plugins.  I even moved it to another VST folder that is scanned by Sonar and it still doesn't find it.  While scanning, I can sometimes see SessionDrummer show up in the little window at the bottom of the screen for a split second, but it just passes it by with no error.
For what its worth,  Sonar X2 no longer shows Session Drummer either.

I have this problem too. One thing I tried in my ignorance is to reinstall an earlier version of Sonar (X2). Nope. Didn't help.

"X3 lost Session Drummer 64"

Did it also lose Session Drummer 4 through 63?

I am having a similar problem only it's with Melodyne in X3 64 bit. The .dll is in the programs folder but the scan is not picking it up. Only VV is listed in the region FX. I followed the instructions above but it didn't help?

Make sure your download was not corrupted by antivirus software.  I had to temporarily disable Avast on my computer, as it was reporting false positive's during download, and other interference/corruption can occur, so it is best to just suspend your antivirus software prior to download.

Re: X3 lost Session Drummer 64 2013/10/03 10:27:40 (permalink)
Well, I did finally get Session Drummer to work in X3, but not the way it was really supposed to.  I tried uninstalling X3 and X2 and then reinstalling X3 alone.  That didn't work.  I even tried deleting all Cakewalk registry entries after uninstalling.  No luck.  Then, after installing X3, I deleted the Session Drummer folder in my VSTplugins folder and installed X2 using the Advanced option and only added SessionDrummer64 as a plugin to install.  After doing that, SD64 works in both X2 and X3.

I did notice that the SD64 dll that X3 installs is 1708 kb and the one X2 installs is 1568 kb.  Was there some kind of change in SD ?

I think robert may be right, maybe my download is corrupted.  I may try re downloading it, sometime.  But for now,  I have it working.

I have brought this to CW's attention.  Apparently their is no real concern about this.  ("A reinstall should fix the problem.")  There are a number of threads regarding this issue.  What I had to do to fix this, after attempting plug-in reinstall in hope of a fix, was to go into the registry and find the strings and such to make sure everything for the x86/32bit (under C:\Program Files (x86)\Cakewalk\Vstplugins and Shared DXi folders) plugs where matched for the counterpart x64 folders under C:\Program Files\Cakewalk\...  So, having both versions of VSTi's (x32 and x64 bit) creates a conflict in the registry.  This has also affected DXi's when having both SONAR x32 and x64 versions installed.  That is, not all DXi's would show up in the x64 version and were then missing in the x32 version (after x64 installation with x32 existing).  I was able to "pull them out" by fixing the registry, particularly Pentagon I (and VELOCITY), for example.

I don't believe we should have to noodle around the registry (or do complete uninstall and reinstall of SONAR) in order to fix this problem.  Surely this can be resolved with a fix to the installation process.

Kind regards,

Living Room Rocker

P.S.  This affects plug-ins randomly.  It does not necessarily happen to the same plugs for everyone.

Try the following:
  • Hold CTRL+SHIFT
  • Double-click on the icon for SONAR X3
  • Select [OK] to personalize
All else fails, run the installer for SONAR X3 and when you are prompted for a Basic or Advanced install choose "Advanced".  Once you get to the list of the different features here make sure to un-tick everything and just tick Session Drummer 3.  Just SD3 will install.

Hope this works!

I haven't yet tried the "Re-Install X2 option" and I'm not all that interested in registry hacks.
I'm seeing the same issue with Session Drummer after upgrading. I've reinstalled X3 several times. I've re-installed only selecting Session Drummer in advanced mode.

Still no Session Drummer.

After reading the various posts on this, I'm no longer looking for answers, just lodging a complaint as an unhappy longtime user. I didn't pay for an upgrade so I could spend the next several weeks trying to help you find the bugs in your installer. I have never seriously considered moving to another DAW until this fiasco.

Re: X3 lost Session Drummer 64 2013/11/06 19:04:50 (permalink)
I just spent a good bit of time today on the phone with this problem.  No solution yet.

I tried re-installing the X2 version of SD3, no go.  Did a full re-install of X3, no difference.  Did the ctrl-shift/double click/ok bit, no difference.  Did advanced install of just SD3 from the X3 install, no difference.

I too have also lost SD3 in X2.

It exists as it should in the correct folder, containing the dll file.  It is properly referenced in the plug in paths.  It worked before in X2, then disappeared from X2 and never showed up in X3 after the X3 install.

It's starting to look to me like all signs are pointing to a conflict with the X3 install, not a conflict with my registries or path assignments.

 I'm at a bit of an end for creative approaches to this.  Anyone have any ideas?

-Thanks.

#####EDIT DEC 5, 2013#####

I realized that Session Drummer 3 was coming up listed in my plugin manager as Session Drummer (no identifier for which version)!  I saw it and Session Drummer 2, but no Session Drummer 3.  Well, I got curious, opened Session Drummmer and found out it's really Session Drummer 3 (face to hand - d'oh!).  I don't know if this threw anyone else off, but hopefully that helps.

Looks like I'm a member of this exclusive club too. I've been using AD and Battery, so I haven't used SD3 x64 in a while. Ran into the exact same situation as the OP. Dragged SD3 in and received a message that it wasn't installed correctly. Reset and rescanned and it completely disappeared from plugin manager. Downloaded X3 again and did a custom install with SD3 only. No go. Tried same custom install with X2. Still nothing. Definitely one of the stranger things I've seen in a while.

The only possible weirdness I noticed in the registry was that there are only five keys under:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Cakewalk Music Software\SONAR Producer\Cakewalk VST X64\Inventory\c:/program files/cakewalk/vstplugins/Session Drummer 3/SessionDrummer x64.dll

isBad=0
isVst=0
isVst3=0
modStats has all zeros
touch=1

Most of the other synths have a lot more keys, so I'm not sure if that has anything to do with it. I probably wouldn't have even noticed this problem for a while if I didn't want to check out those Quick Kits that Dan made. ;)

I'll see if I can give it a go. I don't think you can actually get to the setup.exe and bin files after they're unpacked into the temp directory unless you copy them out of there before cancelling setup when it starts automatically after the four parts are finished expanding. When you cancel it deletes the setup files from temp. And I don't think running part1.exe as admin carries over to setup.exe once they're all unpacked (two separate programs). I'll figure it out and let you know.

Still no luck after running setup as admin. It was worth a try, and now at least I have the uncompressed X3 setup files so I can skip the four packed files if I need to do it again.

you have to do a custom install.
use your sonar X2 installation and re install but only session drummer 3 (untick everything else)

before you do this, back up session drummer and all its content, then delete the folder with session drummers vst / content.

first you might want to do a rescan of plug ins.

this has happen to me and it worked, no problems.

I didn't go into all the details, but yeah I deleted the folder (and even tried deleting registry keys when deleting the folder alone didn't work). There are quite a few threads about this here and on other forums going back several years with different versions of Sonar and SD, and I went through most of them. The main thing I found out is that the various solutions some people have found don't work for everyone. Definitely weird. It may even be specific to Windows 8.1 and X3c in my case. Who knows. But I'll keep trying for a while longer. I actually can't remember the last time I couldn't figure something out that should be fixable (and that's 20 years using Cake stuff). I refuse to be defeated. :-)

This problem looks identical to something I was helping tech support to diagnose last week with another customer.
It appears that on some systems Session drummer fails to load because some dependencies are missing. (A DLL will not load unless all its dependencies are available)
To troubleshoot this download the Dependency Walker tool from here. http://www.dependencywalker.com
Make sure you install the right 32/64 bit flavor for your system.
Then run dependency walker and open the Session Drummer DLL that is failing to scan. If there is a problem with dependencies you will see an error message. If this happens from the file menu save it as a dependency walkler log file and send it to us or link to it here.

If you scroll through the list you should be able to see which dependency is reported as missing. Once you know that it should be possible to reinstall that. Most likely its a microsoft redistributable that somehow didn't install or got uninstalled.

Thanks Noel. There are definitely problems according to Dependency Walker. Here's a link to the file:
