X3C causes 60 cycle hum

I updated to X3c (producer) this morning, opened my latest project, and was met with a 60 cycle hum.  This occurred with the last 3 projects that I had started in X2.  All of these projects use only native plug ins that came with X2 or X3 except for Superior Drummer which was not the cause of the hum.  I opened the projects in safe mode without all plug ins and the problem went away.  I started getting this problem just after X3 came out, and it was caused by the Tape Emulator PC plug in.  When I removed the TE from my projects it went away.  I was hoping X3C would fix this, but instead, it got worse.  I had to restore my computer to just before I installed X3C, and now I can open all my projects without the annoying hum.  I'm waiting for tech support to open, but I'm not a happy camper this morning.  I'm just wondering if anyone else is having this problem.

All the best,
Lynn

I've narrowed it down a bit more and it's kinda weird. It is only buzzing on mono interleaved tracks. It seems the right channel of the Console Emulator is buzzing while the left processes the mono signal. Bizzare. I never had this with X3b.

Can you try following the directions on this page and tell me if you are still getting this error with the Tape Emulator?

Yes, the problem with Tape Emulator's Noise level (including the 60Hz hum emulation) getting continuously higher over time has been acknowledged and referred to the third-party plugin developer. In the mean time, don't use the plugin or replace the instance and keep the Noise level at 0 (I think that should avoid it, but haven't actually tried it).

EDIT: Oops. Cross-posted. So this is fixed in X3c, but might require a re-scan?

"The reason we do not forcefully run this process for upgrade installations is because performing this process will remove custom configuration settings applied to plug-ins. For example, if you configure an audio effect as a synth, this setting will be erased and you will need to reapply the setting. Please keep this in mind when performing the below steps."

I would certain throw this in as a prompt for this activity when installing (default ticked off).

Cheers

Yep. The rescan fixed it. Thanks guys. I had rescanned the plugins but didn't reset them. That did the trick! Thanks Dan for the quick advice. I know it's a busy day in Cakeland!
EDIT: I was premature. Problem still persists.

Re: X3C causes 60 cycle hum 2013/10/31 13:33:25 (permalink)
OK, so I lied. The problem persists and it's not caused by the Tape Emulator but the Console Emulator. It creates the VERY loud buzz if the interleave switch is set to mono. The left channel of the Console Em processes the mono signal while the right channel issues the hum. The rescan did not fix this, unfortunately.

Dan, thanks for responding.  I just inserted TE into a project, and I did the reset and scan per the instructions you provided.  I'm not waiting to see if the 60 cycle hum appears after a period of time.  I'll let you know.  If this solves the problem with the TE, I will reinstall X3C and try this solution to that version.  I'll keep you posted.

The scan won't make any difference before the update. Please try after X3C

Edit: If you keep a copy of the console emulator, before x3c, you can copy it over the x3c one if that's just the problem. Trying to reproduce the issue here.

I reinstalled x3c and did the reset and rescan per the instruction, and it did not help.  I noticed that it is the console emulator that is causing the problem.  As noted in another thread, it's the right channel that is pegged out.  I'm back on x3b until this gets fixed.

If you back up the Console Emulator .dll's from X3B, apply X3c, then re-copy over the X3b .dll's does the issue go away?

This would allow you to run the update with all of C's fixes but the previous CE that was working correctly for you.

Seth, I tried doing what you suggested, but it failed.  I'm still getting the hum even after copying the CE .dll's from X3b over the ones in X3c.  I reset, rescanned, rebooted, but nothing works, so I'm back to X3b again.  Let us know when you find something.

Okay, that's what I thought. Turning that on/off replicated the issue on my system. That option is off by default so that's why most users aren't seeing it.

Yeah, that's a definite annoyance and it's logged, but at least turning it off is an easy work around to be working in X3c with mono interleaves and the Console Emulator.

This was likely introduced with some VST3 cleanups.

Seth

That's because it wasn't the Tape Emulator, it was the Console Emulator.

The Tape Emulator Hum was fixed in X3c update.

And the Console Emulator hum only seems to appear if you have the 64 bit double precision engine checked in preferences.
