Noel, nice to see the level of transparency that you (and other Cakewalk staffers) have been showing recently. It's refreshing. As an unhappy Sonar 1-X2 user, who would love to be able to rejoin the fold one day, I hope this continues. From the outside, X3 looks like it was a pretty solid release. A few old bugs resolved (I've been in touch with Andrew already - waiting to hear back), and a few new features, and I'd probably jump right back on the Cakewalk ship if things keep trending in the direction they have been since X3. So kudos...

Agreed!  I'm still struggling with X2a, and the silence of 2013 pretty much lost me.  But I've been checking in on X3, and it's impressive so far.

Cakewalk,
Please do not get caught up building new-features/marketing-releases while bugs remain unfixed.  Please make bug fixes a priority for X3.

And pretty please: don't ever go back to the "We can't say anything about anything" days (well, 9 months, to be more accurate), while users struggle with fundamental bugs.

Basically, do not abandon X3 and hide away like you did with X2 and we can wipe the slate clean and move forward happily.

Best wishes!

Please give us a few examples of these "bugs", I must be one of the only users that never has issues!

I hope this update fixes the up and down track scroll for the track view so you cn only show one or 2 tracks at the top of the track view, like you could in all the other 12 Sonar versions

A balance is needed.  Certainly they should prioritize pervasive problems that impair the use of the product for large numbers of users.  Much of what remains are situations that are not pervasive, but are related to a particular user's choice of hardware, software, or workflow.  I'm not suggesting that these situations should never be addressed, but it doesn't make any sense to halt all forward progress in order to deal with a situation seen by only a few users.

Every product manager has to deal with this trade-off.  Typically development shops have a team that is in charge of support issues, and this is separate from the product development team.  That ensures that the product continues forward at the same time that problems are addressed.  Smaller shops might not be able to segregate their teams, and that can make this balance harder to achieve.

X3C already? I haven't even gotten X3 yet. I'm moving to North Carolina and my studio is in boxes. I wonder what version it will be when I finally get settled in a few weeks.

Am I the only that thinks:
1)Cake had a good vision for the future, but it took a little longer than customers were ready/patient for?
2)The Roland actually hampered Cake's ability to do business?

I think the uncertainty over a number of months of perhaps knowing they were up for sale, then the hiatus while it all takes shape, all contrived to put a damper on things.  I've been in companies when this sort of thing happens (a few times) and it can create a difficult vibe: long term plans of the old owner go on hold, staff don't know what the future holds, senior management can't share much whilst negotiations are underway, and human beings always suspect the worst (they're sometimes right...)

But the clouds have all lifted.  I personally feel there's a strong feeling around here now that CW are headed back to the sunny uplands, which is great.  Can't wait for X3c!

That definitely can be a factor.  I would also suspect that it was hard to get approvals from Roland and decisions were slow in coming.  Based on how differently things seem to be working now, I surmise that the day-to-day decisions are happening at Gibson instead of Roland, even though the transfer isn't official yet.

I heard video feature is getting some love in this update. Lets see.

Yeah, I read that somewhere too! And I'm really excited about this. The X-series have been really cool on my system. X2 was great but X3 seems to be slightly more stable and a whole lot more snappier and solid. Whatever this patch improves, it'll be great. If the video feature get's a do over I can't wait to start using it!

Video features are X3d.

I suspect that a bit. Obviously, it's just speculation. But if you cast your mind back, the programme for X1, whatever issues there may have been was "many and frequent updates", just like it is right now for X3. I wouldn't be surprised to discover that the lack of updates and lack of communication during the X2 cycle was Roland-mandated.

Saying all that, nobody who wasn't there will likely ever find out what really went on, and it's none of my business, really. Glad that things seem to be going back to normal though.

I just want to add my voice to the chorus and say that X3 has been a revelation.  And also that it is super encouraging to see that the bakery is back sharing openly on these forums.  It makes us feel valued as customers and it brings us a lot of hope that the future of Cakewalk, despite the recent change of ownership, is very bright indeed!

Keep up the good work.  X3 is a joy to use.

Re: X3c Coming Soon 2013/10/21 16:42:49 (permalink)
So far...

I had some issues with Pro-Channel. Seems I had two Pro-Channels working on several midi-audio tracks. I could display one in the console view, and another in the Inspector. The Inspector one did not manipulate the light/buttons in the console view, but both were active as I hear changes when modifying either EQ. In addition, there were other midi-audio tracks that would not display a Pro-Channel in the Inspector at all, although they would in the console view.

Thinking back - I believe I originally started the project in X2 Essential. I decided to delete these tracks, since they were only VST synth audio outs, and quickly recreate them. (Colored tracks and busses made this really easy...). Problem solved - it's likely there's a corner-case type of problem when opening a file from a non-ProChannel version of Sonar - but it's unlikely that most folks will run into it.

One bad 32 bit plug-in made the teleport bridge blow - not much to report there....

Noel, do you consider the stability issues with having multiple VST with Midi Out a fundamental issue, and will it be addressed in X3c? The release notes for X3b said it had been fixed, but it's till broken...

Stability:
  • Resolved a crash when using direct MIDI output with multiple VST Instruments simultaneously, such as multiple instances of JamStix or Catanya (CWBRN-5781, CWBRN-2504, CWBRN-2564, CWBRN-1739)

The original crash was definitely addressed - I reproduced and fixed it myself and tested with Jamstix. This is another variant that was not in our system. It probably won't make it into X3C due to time constraints but we'll definitely do our best to address it for the next update since its an important fix. Sorry for the delay but there have been a several lot pressing issues to address before this one.

Thanks for taking the time to respond Noel, it's appreciated, and great news that you'll be looking to address this in the next  update after X3c. I'm sure you've seen the other posts by X3b users that show this is not just restricted to Jamstix / Catanya;  VSTs such as Kirnu Cream, Reaktor etc all cause crashes when Midi out is enabled and there is more than one instance of the VST. Hopefully the fix will address the underlying issue so any VST with Midi Out enabled will work with more than one instance.

Keep in mind that the development for X3 took place while Cakewalk was under Roland's watch.
Possibly Cakewalk's reps were quiet because their priorities were set on testing X3?  I don't know.
But I do appreciate how active and responsive they are being now.

This has been a very long standing bug which CW refused to fix for over 4 years. I've reported this back on Feb 24 2009 as CWBRN-1336. Here is the web page I created back then and spent and endless amount of time trying to get CW to address this issue, but they never thought that Sonar being incapable of routing MIDI properly, and crashing when more than one plugin has MIDI Output enabled was important enough to fix.

Because of this I've dumped Sonar after just getting fed up with endless empty promises from Noel that it will be fixed in a next release and spending too much of my time and money on this broken functionality that I depended on. And yes, I'm clearly still bitter about this whole issue. I was a loyal customer from the time when the software was still called "CakeWalk" and only had MIDI tracks and no audio tracks. But that bug plus the huge new pile of bugs that came with X1 was just the last straw since I knew CW would need to fix those first so it was just a waste of my time.

I just got an email today that CWBRN-1336 has been fixed. Hey it only took 4.5 years! I still have $99 credit with CW so maybe I can use that to try out the latest. I'll only believe that it is fixed if I see it with my own eyes. Then again I don't know if $99 is enough to upgrade from X1 to X3 and if not it's not worth bothering.

You need to fork out another $100 Steven and if you are still running X1 it is a no brainer.

I just got a CWBRN-13970 email today too. This was about a playlist problem that they say was fixed. However I noticed that it was fixed in the first X3 release when I loaded it up. That makes me think that they are behind in getting those emails out. The biggest bummer to me was that I thought it was CWBRN-20634 that they were reporting as fixed. I WAS SO EXCITED! Then I re-read the email and saw it was a much older and already fixed problem.
But since it was old news, maybe they've already fixed the new playlist problem (a MUCH bigger problem) and I just haven't heard about it yet because they are behind on their emails. And maybe they're behind in their emails because they're so busy fixing our requests
