You can be Free
Here's a tune I wrote and recorded last fall. I reworked it earlier this year with X1 --> Switched from Addictive Drums to Superior Drummer 2, and Trilogy to Trilian. Let me know what you think and please suggest ideas for improvement to the mix or whatever. Thank you! Geno http://soundclick.com/share.cfm?id=10389337

Hi Geno, this is some piece of work, excellent. Vocals and guitars are top notch and the composition is interesting till the very end, actually for me as a guitar player it gets even more interesting near the end, great solo and super tight playing. Greetings, Rik

Nice work. Very professional sound, maybe even a little too much so for my tastes. The composition though is quite nice, and keeps things interesting throughout.

Very impressive Geno. Your guitar work is superb, as usual. Elements of many genres here. I detect Rush, Kansas, Jeff Beck(you can tell I'm old school, and these are some of my favorites). I like the arrangement and choice of sounds. You've cut some killer vox tracks and I would like to hear them a little hotter in the mix. You have a great ear.........excellent job......................Ron

Rik - Thanks for the comments. I'm still a fan of the "guitar solo" but realize that is not everybody's cup of tea. Having come from writing guitar instrumentals, which are like one big guitar solo, I try not to overdo it on the vocal tunes --- so I try to weave it in along with the vocals (hopefully not too much - I have to restrain myself!) Dean - thanks for the comments. Ron - thanks for listening. I'm old school too! I love Kansas and Jeff Beck. I agree with you on the vocals - they should be hotter. Thanks for the feedback.

Those drums are superb! :) I agree with the others...this is just great and sounds pro to me. I agree about raising the vox a tad. Great tune and seriously great guitar solo too. Love your vox, as always.

Your voice initially gives me a George Michael vibe (not a bad thing, he's a great singer.) Great dumb track... The song give me a Duran Duran vibe (again not a bad thing, I like Duran Duran) :-) And then the whistling guitars? High hard harmonies? In places gave me a strong Queen/Styx vibe with the chord changes, the lead guitar on this is pretty incredible... Wow, this thing just finished with that last FREE!!!!! And I felt like I needed a cigarette? It was intense. As much of "an experience" as anything else. While I tried in my mind to liken it to things? It's really unlike anything I've heard in hindsight. Amazing...

Excellent performace(s) there Geno. Loved those high harmonies, and the guitar work was super. So far as the mix goes, I think it sounded great overall, but it felt like it may have been a bit percussion heavy early on... not so much later. There was some interesting synth work in the beginning and a guitar riff or two that I'd have liked to hear more of. This could just be a taste thing for sure, because, on balance, the whole tune worked just fine.

Wow, that was quite an interesting composition. Really like that drum track, I guess most of the song is centered around that crazy track. Very well developed. Singing is great as is the guitar playing. Crazy guitar break! Great Stuff .... Really Well Done.

Hi Geno, Wow, this is really nice! Full of great harmonic surprises and terrific guitar playing. I also like the way the vocal(s) were recorded. You might like this guitar playing by Jack Grassel. http://grandpatunes.com/quietandnasty.mp3 You can find out more about Jack at jackgrassel.com Regards, GT guitartrek Here's a tune I wrote and recorded last fall. Big difference with the SD2 drums, Geno. What a job you did programming them. You at times sound a lot like that singer from Jellyfish, who also had a tremendous pure tone. The Vai runs at ~2:30 were terrific. The prog/metal throwback feel on this isn't my cuppa, but it was done with great skill and attention. Excellent use of reverb at the last note. What did you use?

This sounds Great!!!! You are a far better musician/singer/songwriter than I am no doubt about that. There is no way I could ever do something like this it's just beyond my capabilities, the timing on this is perfect and far beyond my ability. This is spectacular, actually one of the best I've ever heard on here or anywhere for that matter. There's too many highlights for me to single out one thing, it all sounds awesome to me. This sounds awesome!!! GuitarBob

Tap - thanks for listening and your comments! GT - Thank you! Actually when I was in high school and college I used to go see Jack Grassel - he's from my home town. He is a monster for sure. I wish I could play like that. I have a couple friends that took lessons from him. Thanks for the link and his website - didn't even know he had one. I'll be checking into more of that for sure. James - Thanks a lot for your comments! Yeah I'm digging those SD2 drums. I checked out Jellyfish and I really like the tone and style of his voice. Never knew of them before - thanks for turning me on. The reverb I using is an impulse for PerfectSpace that I downloaded off the internet. It is the thickest most cavournous impulse I could find that wasn't muddy. It's on the vocals the whole song. Tim - Thank you! about the drums - It's a combination of playing live via the padkontrol and programming. I always start out by tapping as much as I can. I played some drums when I was younger and worked on rudiments and drum fills so that helps. But sometimes I get lazy on my laptop and just prgogram. GuitarBob - thanks a lot for the positive feedback! Your stuff is great.

wow...great job all the way round! Around 2:00 you started using the ride a bit...I would have like to hear that carry through (as opposed to the stopping)....James is right...killer riff right after that....great guitar work...and the kit is really rocking...a tad buzy wiff the roll during your lead (for my taste)...but man the sound is killer.. The is a top notch project... A++ Great job!

Hi Geno, if you haven't worked hard on this arrangement and mix then you are far more talented than you sound here already! The arrangement itself was impeccable and all of the timing was right on. You have a voice that lends itself very well to the music and the guitar chops are amazing. I would have liked to have heard the vocals a little more to the forefront of the mix, although they were far from unintelligable. The mix was very hot in terms of volume on my computer I needed to run the volume almost all the way down or it would have hurt my ears. I suppose that's how a radio ready tune is mixed nowadays though. The cymbals seemed to be cut off short in a few places toward the beginning of the song. I'm not sure how this could be resolved though because you take all of the dynamics down at the same place.....the drums for the most part were believable as real drums except in the places where the cymbals are cut short and in a few of the faster runs I imagined a real drummer playing it and he would have needed to be super fast and world class to pull it off. Most drummers I have worked with could not have played some of that material. Overall though your song is way above par!!! I hope to hear more from you!!

mgh - thank you. Looking forward to hearing your new guitar amp setup. thepogue - thanks for the feedback and ideas about the snare and the ride. Starise - Thanks for your critical ear. Yeah - the cymbals are cut short in one spot in the beginning that I keep telling myself I'm going to fix. The one thing I don't like about SuperiorDrummer2 is the cymbal chokes are done with an envelope - which are hard to sound realistic. Addictive Drummer had true sampled cymbal chokes. I don't know about the vocals - I've got them as good as I can, but I still need some help with that. As for the arrangement - that's one aspect I think is very important. I'm always trying to build the arrangement to create interest for the listener - so thank you for commenting on that. My mixes are getting better as I have used some of Danny Danzi's song consultation and have learned a ton from him. As for the drums - I used to play in Fusion bands with unbeleivable drummers and have always loved drums (I played drums a little in my youth). notnat - thanks for listening.

Geno - you are a very talented man! Vox are excellent as always from you. love the harmonies - is that you as well? guitars are wonderful. bass is really nice. the mix is really well done! nothing stands out that I can hear out of place. fantastic guitar solo! (love the cowbell! ) ok, ONE little nit pick about the mix - the ride on the right is just a tad loud in the mix (listening on cans). not bad, but maybe bring it down just a little. fantastic ending - great vox!

When I switched from AD to SUperiorDrummer2 the ride wasn't what I was used to, so I think I overdid the gain on it. Clean - Thanks! Faust1587 - Porcupine Tree: I LOVE them. He really knows how to write great hooks. And Dream Theater - another one of my favs.
