I'm gonna have to invest in or build a better desk for my set up so I'm curious how you guys approach this. I've seen some very nice set ups in some of your profile pics and have seen other cool stuff elsewhere (like a guy who modified an old piano into a desk). So yeah... whatchyoo guys got goin' on?

My desk is an ancient Boeing surplus, government-gray metal desk I bought twenty years ago for $20.

It's not much to look at, but it's heavy and less prone to resonating than, say, an Ikea laminated fiberboard worktable.

I'm hoping to upgrade to Ikea soon.  As soon as my current 'suite' disintegrates I'm on it.

Flatpack heaven.

I love Ikea stuff. When it inevitably falls apart people just huck it on the side of the road and I have tons of free, nice looking, cleanable surfaces to build desks and shelves out of. :-D

@57gregy... that's a nice set up but aren't those monitors a little high for listening? Or are you another really tall dude? That desk reminds me of one I used to work at at my old job. It was great for focusing in on the work because it took up my whole field of vision and I could easily ignore whoever was trying to bug me.

Yeah, it's not the best speaker placement for sitting while listening. I will usually stand and listen, too. Especially after sitting for hours while working on a song.

Too bad they weren't a little shorter. Then you could put them on the lower shelf. Then again that might be TOO low. This is all making me really think I need to find some adjustable speaker stands. I'm a pretty good carpenter but I don't think I want to piss around as much as I would need to get proper monitor placement and I doubt I'll be able to find a suitable desk that would accommodate my needs. hmm... I can't remember if I kept my old stands when I moved or if I gave them away. I had to give away so much good stuff. Urgh.

Re:Your DAW desks... show them to me... 2012/06/09 10:48:17 (permalink)

After checking prices I decided I'd save a ton by
designing and building my desk. (and did)
One PC for the internet junk and one for music/video.

It's 8' long and the wing is 6'. Basically two boxes joined.

Building your own has many benefits other than cost
savings...such as the keyboard tray...nice to hold multiple
keyboards and mice and still room for a meal lol.

The "wing" holds guitars that I want to keep in the cases and
many misc. items. The top is hinged and has an area that I have
other hardware such as a VG-88 - ready if I want to use it.

The green Strat in stand is for midi if you're wondering why it's not
with the other guitars. I like to keep it connected-just hit the power
and play. It's in a GR-30 or a GI-20...mostly use the GR-30

It's built with 3/4" "furniture" grade plywood. Basic tools to build it.

The trays for the interface or whatever pull out too.(abover the internet PC)..makes hooking up or making changes easy.

Everything is on a single protected circuit with an isolated ground. Protected
by a Furman AR-15 Series II.
(I also have all the big screen TV's Furman protected...highly recommend)

After using it for over 5 years there is nothing that I wished
I'd designed differently. The design was based on equipment and
function....neither have really changed. More equipment and less function unfortunately although I do hope to start recording again this coming winter.

Hope this helps give you some ideas Beepster and good luck.

Though not inexpensive, take a look at Anthro Carts.  They are generally extremely heavy duty, and can be customized almost any way you want (including desk height).  They come in a wide variety of sizes and styles.  For me, much better than using a traditional desk.

My favorite is the Johnson. (in the micro's) It's a twin speaker and even has echo. lol.
They're fun. The red Marshall was very hard to get...I don't recall which
country I had to get it from.
I wouldn't hesitate to use the mini Marshall stack to record with...it's
sure enough a Marshall...I think they're about 350 now and worth every bit IMO.

Re:Your DAW desks... show them to me... 2012/06/10 18:36:40 (permalink)
@spacey... Your set up is similar to what I'd like to have if I end up with enough space. One desk front and center and at least one side desk. Years ago when I still had a "proper" studio (it wasn't proper but as close as I ever got) I built desks surrounding me on three sides for my DAW set up with various hanging shelves and a couple mass storage platforms. I never really got to use the darned thing though. I usually build these types of things completely out of scrap material because I can't afford the nice clear pines and what not so what I end up doing is finishing any rough surfaces with flooring material. I've used industrial vinyl tiles, roll out laminate and currently my desk has a hardwood laminate surface. Ideally I'd put a right angle plastic lip over the edge of these set ups but I've never actually bothered so far. Sometimes I luck out and find a nice wide piece of Ikea laminate and then I just create a support system underneath it which is actually pretty cool. So anyway, your post made me take another look at what I have in my garage and I think I may end up building a couple more platforms before I move to mess around with so at least the main work is done and then I can configure it all wherever I land. I also have a couple actual desks and drawer chests that can act as modular sections. I will really need to take a look at monitor stands though if I go this route or build my own but even if I don't have access to a proper workspace to build them that stuff is small so I could do it in an apartment on a kitchen table or something. So basically you've inspired me to just rely on my own hands and wits again which really is the best way to go. It just hurts so darned much doing these things but I do prefer stuff to be custom built for my freakish self. BTW I'm curious (and impressed) by the mini amp collection. Do you use some of those for recording or are you just a collector? If you do record with them how does it turn out? It'd be cool to play around with those in a recording setting but I didn't think you could get the greatest sound out of those minis. Also the mini guits are cool. If that's your thing you might like a band called the Muscle ****es. The string players use mini guitars (which supposedly one of the members builds himself) and wear leather thongs on stage. Funny stuff. Pretty ripping music too. Not sure if they still play though. Cheers.

Re:Your DAW desks... show them to me... 2012/06/10 19:12:40 (permalink)
Beepster it's fantastic that I've inspired you in some way.

A couple things I considered;
I wanted enough room to move with a guitar in hand without
banging into stuff and still be able to reach what I needed to.

The chair turned out to be the biggest hassle. My wife finally found
one that the arms fold up. I've rebuilt it a few times...not easy to find
and they are costly.

I understand material cost...personally I tried to make mine nice
because it was to be in our den. If not for that it could have been
boards stacked on blocks for all I care....just as long as it was stacked
as needed.

The design was also to contain my area. I didn't want it to expand into
the room but still be enough for comfort and storage. It is nice having
the big drawer for all the small misc. stuff and still a few large enough
areas for guitars and such.

No I haven't recorded with the micro amps. I've meant to but ya know how that goes.
I originally bought a couple and the mini guitars for the little ones that come
around. I liked the micro's and just got them when I ran across them.

I spent to many years dealing with mic's and amps...not regretably but now
things have changed and I have no problem or issues with software but do miss
the air pumping as well as many other things from the past. Now they're toys for
fun. And nothing like making little people smile. Not bad for here either I rekon.

Still...wish you the best and comfort and function are the mains...everything else is
fluff.
