Your DAW desks... show them to me...
I'm gonna have to invest in or build a better desk for my set up so I'm curious how you guys approach this. I've seen some very nice set ups in some of your profile pics and have seen other cool stuff elsewhere (like a guy who modified an old piano into a desk). So yeah... whatchyoo guys got goin' on?

Yes he does. I'd be going far more minimalistic though. I just don't have the room for something that epic. Someday though... someday.

Only difference today is the cases are store away and the 7 position guitar stand is there (on the right). And I sold one of the P-Solo preamps (on the left)

I think my main needs are to obviously have enough space for my flatscreen, monitors, etc... on the main level. A pull out shelf for my QWERTY and trackball. A raised semi open cubby (for airflow) underneath to stick my tower. A raised shelf at the back to put my i/o on and some kind of adjustable sub shelf for my monitors (I don't really want to have to buy speaker stands). Then maybe a couple drawers and/or cubbys just to store random gack.

@bapu... it might if that folding table has anything that rattles on it. My current desk is a platform attached directly to the wall. No legs or nothing. Just some handmade wooden brackets. It's rock solid.

Sadly when I move I'll probably have to toss some legs on it because most landlords don't like it when you start attaching things to the walls. Meh... I might just do it on the sly anyway. It's only a few holes which are easily patchable after the desk has been removed.

My desk is an ancient Boeing surplus, government-gray metal desk I bought twenty years ago for $20. It's not much to look at, but it's heavy and less prone to resonating than, say, an Ikea laminated fiberboard worktable.

@craigb... yeah, that's KIND of what I'm looking for. I wouldn't want the shelf on the very bottom like that though. It would interfere with my feet and my wheelchair.

Yeah, I'm not completely crazy about it either (because I'm 6' 4" tall and my knees don't have much room). I don't remember the company that makes the project desk, but I think I got it through Musician's Friend. I know they make others, but I liked the raised area for my monitors and the four-space rack in the middle. I doubt it would be that difficult to have someone make you one to your specifications, especially if you provide them with an idea. Got any "Spaceys" out your way? (If you don't get the reference, Spacey builds a lot of really nice things, including desks.) My basic approach is to have the desk in the middle (and turned away from the walls to reduce reflections), then I have a small mixer off to the right with all my synth and v-drum gear (all my MIDI cords go that way too), with a larger mixer to the left that handles bass, vocals, guitars and anyone playing live. The small mixer feeds into the larger and the outputs from the larger mixer go into my soundcard.

@karyn... heh, well yeah but I build them to create the illusion they are floating. In my old place I had one attached to a couple pillars so the back was open. That looked REALLY cool and seriously did look like it was floating in mid air. ;-)

Beepster Sorry guys. Got pulled away for a second. @bapu... how long have you been engineering for? I got my first real mixer (the first mixer picture above) and Tascam 80-8 and 80-2 in 1986. So, I've been "recording" since then. I more or less took a break from 2003 until early 2006 when I starting building the DAW (starting with SONAR 7, even though I did own all CAKEWALK "producer" versions from PA-7, just never used them). So truthfully I've been "engineering" since 2007 or 2008.
