when you say "the computer" changes to the conexant are you talking about in SOUNDS AND AUDIO DEVICES on the computer or are we talking about ONLY in MC?

I would say that if you have the blue light go off on the alpha that we have a problem there with the hardware we need to worry about.  do you have the alpha plugged into the FRONT USB port of your computer or the back?  front ports tend to have less power available than rear ports do, so if you have it plugged into the front, try plugging it into the back.

also - you don't have it plugged into a "usb hub" do you?  it should be plugged DIRECTLY into the USB port on the computer (in the back).

i mean only in MC changes it, ocassionally.  generally, i re-boot the computer and that does the trick.

my computer doesn't have a USB port on the back.  i figured out by my little self that the Alpha shouldn't be plugged to a hub.

oh - sorry - you're on a laptop aren't you?

I would suggest that if it "loses" the alpha - if the blue light goes out - that you simply unplug the USB cable, wait about 5 seconds, then plug it back in.  that should work fine instead of havnig to reboot the computer - but you'll still have to set MC back up with the alpha after that because it will default back to the conexant.

there's a setting to stop the USB ports from powering down and if you're interested in trying to fix that I can try to help you.  I'll have to go find the info on how to do that and it is a little more complicated than what we've done so far, but shouldn't be too bad.

I think I can do that for you.  i'll talk to you on friday then.

I can't guarentee it will stop the alpha from turning off, but it might.

you might not see this until Friday, but here are the instructions when you're ready for them.

Instructions 1 Press the "Windows" key and "R" key simultaneously. A "Run" box appears.

2 Type "Devmgmt.msc," then press "Enter." This loads the Device Manager.

3 Double-click on "Universal Serial Bus controllers."

4 Double-click on "USB Root Hub." You may have more than one "USB Root Hub" listed in the Device Manager. Double-click on any one of the "USB Root Hubs."

5 Click on the "Power Management" tab.

6 Uncheck the box next to "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power."

7 Push the "OK" button and close the "Device Manager."

8 Repeat steps four through seven if you would like to disable multiple "USB Root Hubs.

i got your messege late night New York time.  it was a busy day, after a so-so evening, i woke up tired.  the good news is that the files i made before that pop and crackles aren't popping and crackling now.  i tried using the soft synths, from Dream Station, but i cannot understand how to use it yet.  it plays the notes that i write on the Staff View but it seems to have only one instrument or patch sound.  i couldn't figure out how to change the patches.  thats when i discovered that the files i have previously made were smooth.  having ASIO changes the latency bar and when i rode it to fast all pops and crackles dissappeared,  so i can make music again. Thanks to you and all who wrote to help me.  i let you know when you can listen to the music.

i copied your previous messege and i will follow suit as soon as i can.

try using Edirol VSC instead of dreamstation.  dreamstation is geared more toward someone who wants an "analog synth" like the old analog hardware synths.  edriol is much more straight forward.

NOW is the time to look at guitarhacker's link above to see how to use softsynths in MC.  he uses TTS-1 in the examples, but Edirol VSC works the exact same way.
