can record midi with soft synths but then i push play and nothing plays??Please help

This is pissing me offf sooooooooooooooo bad.All day Ive been at this with no luck can someone please help me.Im running sonar producer expanded x1d on windows 7 64 bit.I have asio drivers and use a roland cakewalk ua-25ex.I play midi with a apro500 by roland.Ive never had this problem before ,never and Ive been working on this track for quite some time with no probelem.I have checked and double and triple and then again checked the routhing but itb seems right,.Are there any settings anyone ca think of that would cause this to happen?

OK how do i post a link to my cakewalk file?I checked the routing and it looks good,the synths are there and loaded.I even added new instances of the synth then dragged the midi file to the new synth with the same problem.I also can play the synths and I hear the sounds and even was able to record them but when I play back I cant hear it.Audio does play.I dont think the midi data is out of range for the synth,one of the synths not playing is superior drummer.O bvioously I did something stupid but I cant figure it out for the life of me and you didnt have to be so mean about it Im sorry I did multiple posts.I HAVE A DISABLING DISEASE!!!!

Have a quick look at this video - At least then you can rule routing out, and we can start looking for other reasons.

 
Hey Karl (and with apologies to the OP for straying a little off topic) - I just took a look at that video you linked to above - very cool mate.

I wish I'd watched something like that when I was trying to get my head around MIDI in Music Creator 2004 all those years ago 
 
I remember my old mate 'Doc' walking me through it one painful step at a time in the Guitar Tracks forum (and by e-mail) until the penny finally dropped!
 
I think the likes of your video/s and some of the tutorials myself and others have spent a lot of time putting together for complete beginners (I'm not a fan of the term 'newbs') can often be seen by some as pandering to those who can't be bothered to RTFM. But in the past I've found them priceless as a resource - sometimes the human touch and a bit of 'live' feedback is often invaluable.
 
Similar to Doc's help with MIDI I recall reading an excellent thread (now a 'sticky' in Guitar Tracks) by Robert B that walks the reader one step at a time through the basic (but often confusing) use of busses. Again, my willingness back then to learn and absorb every scrap of available information paid off and seeing it all laid out for me meant I finally grasped it. Now I take that sort of very basic knowledge for granted, but it's all too easy to forget how complex these concepts can appear at first.
 
By way of continuing the tradition I've put together a few long and (hopefully) helpful threads and posts over the years in both the Guitar Tracks and Home Studio forums. Even now I don't have a problem with discussing stuff with others by PM or e-mail if I can help, and I'm a big believer in my maxim "a picture paints a thousand words, but an annotated screenshot is the best of both worlds"!

Hey thanks very much fastbikerboy.I just watched the video and then went into sonar and checked the routing but still no sound.Its wierd its happening in two projects and when i hit play there is less than a second of drum noise then nothing.Even when I added a new instance of the same drummer synth and dragged midi onto it there is nothing.Even strangeer to me is that I started a new project and opened drums in those and they played fine.I have checked all teh settings I know to check although I know I dont know everything to check.Any ideas?Thanks again so so much for your help!!

it seems to be just not playing,but when i hit play i hear a quick sound then nothing.Ill check the midi preferences,its strange cause in opened  a new project added superior drummer and dragged the midi from the non-playing project to the new project and then it played???

Ok i increased teh midi buffer from 250 to 300 and i heard the drums in the project that wasnt working but its crackling and making bad noises in my speakers and my headphoines

That sounds like you are trying to run latency too low for your system to handle. Increase latency by changing the ASIO buffer size or WDM latency slider (depending on driver mode). You'll find both in Preferences under the Audio settings.

Doesn't make much sense or sound right. It should be a number of samples for the buffer. For example 64 (which is very low) 128, 256, 512, 1024 etc. Are you sure you aren't using WDM mode? Have you tried the other mode to the one you are using. Some systems work well on one and not another. I can't run WDM for example.

What interface/sound card are you using? Can you post screenshots of your settings?

If it was working before a restore it must be settings related.

Ok on one project I through elimination took off tracks mastering plugin off teh master track and it started playing??What does that mean?Can I not use that plugin at all?Ill check my other project and then let you know

A couple of simple questions:

1. Can you record audio and play that back?
2. Does the recorded midi track really show any events?
Check in midi event view for one.
One thing that will turn off sound in mosts synths is CC07(volume) is set to zero. Check that out in event view that track does not start with something like that.
Certain settings in Sonar send zero to all controller at stop.

3. Are meters showing activity on midi track when played back?
4. One old bug in Sonar is that many disabled/muted midi tracks to the same synth still affect operation.
Known is sustain pedal event(CC64) but there may be others too.
So remove all clips or tracks routed to the same problem synth, route them to midi out port that is not used or something, or delete them.

Just a few ideas...
