customized keyboard shortcuts from sonar pe 8.53 importable to X2 but not consistent (?)
its been a long time since i felt the need for asking something here, but right now i am a little frustrated since i wanted to optimize my shortcuts in x2 that imported from sonar 8 ( i skipped x1) actually i wonder why: 1: some commands work but the name of the command is different 2: some commands do not work and i cant (havent searched for hours) find the new one that do the same 3: also i cant delete single commands that work but actually i would like to change eventually this sounds confusing but i am not shure how to explain it completely correctly in english so let me give an example: in sonar 8.53 i have the "tab" key setup so that it does what the keybindings call: bearbeiten⎜auf spuren abmischen roughly translated that means: edit⎜render to audiotrack and i use this just to render whatever clips i want to render now in sonar X2 it still works BUT in the shortcut window even if it says that it is connected to that operation the operation itself is not anymore available in the targets ... means: if i search for "tab" it says that "tab" does "bearbeiten⎜auf spuren abmischen" but on the right side displaying the shortcut targets there is no command "bearbeiten⎜auf spuren abmischen" at all also i wanted to ask what keys do know what "f7" and "f8" did ??? thanks

There is a problem with the idea. When X1 came out the shortcuts were changed to reflect the new Skylight GUI. In many cases the way a thing is done in the X series is very different to the way things were done in prior versions. CW took a lot of flack on this precisely because the keyboard shortcuts were abandoned and new ones were put in place. The idea was to make some of most used shortcuts simpler and mnemonic.

There were quite a few changes between 8.5 and X2 that may be giving the import process trouble. For example. functions related to layers would not work because the design element was replaced with lanes. Other functions have been relocated from the main menu to view menus like the Bounce to Clips and Bounce to Tracks which are now in the the Track view menus. I am not sure the import process is smart enough to find mappings that have been moved from one area to another. As far the bindings for F7 and F8: F7 invokes the Move tool F8 Cycles through Edit tools (Edit/Timing/Split)

thanks john - so its something in between a bug and a feature - lol actually its weird that you can still import that shortcuts but they are (so it seems) named differently which creates some confusion what i also cant really stand is that in the new interface you cant change the size of several selction windows - whats the reason for that - espacially for example in the audiodriver window... you cant not even read a quarter of the text thats written in it... btw: i am very interested about your personal opinoin about the whole X-series - what do you think are the (lets say) 5 things about it that make it great compared to sonar 8.53 ? the only things that changed for me is that i now finally have a perfect midiperformance with my motu xt midiinterface with external hardware - to be honest: i see no special other improvement - on the contrary - i find that its all a little cluttered and there are some real annoying bugs in x2 (for example: try to automate the transposition of miditracks from a controller - the fader moves but the pitch doesnt change - it only changes if you turn the knob with the mosue) THIS is stuff that makes me really doubt of a product best regards

thanks - actually i know what they do - i just couldnt find the new keys that do know what the old assignment did before... :-) but i found that in the old thread i linked. ps: as mentioned - its just weird that the import process does it right - but that it doesnt show it correctly in the menue... cheers

info@tomflair.com oh - i just realize that this might be one of the not so few annoyances that cakewalk keeps "bringing" to their customers http://forum.cakewalk.com/New-Functions-for-F7-F8-F9-F10-You-Gotta-Be-Kidding-Me-m2157349.aspx
That is a 3 year old thread. I would imagine those posting in that thread have come to terms with the changes a long time ago.
i did not realize the age of the thread - still it reflects my momentary feelings about the program :-) but its ok - at least now i know those changes are no "issues" of the program anyway i missed any form of information in the online manuals that would have been useful in that context probably its also a bad idea to use a program in another language than english because it makes it much harder to communicate issues with the majority of the users best regards

I'm on X3c and have been a strong supporter of the X series from nearly day one. First for me the track Inspector is a major improvement in the way CW has implemented it. For MIDI it provides all the MIDI controls I need located in a convenient place. I like the Browser very much. I like the Smart Tools. I really like the way automation works now. My biggest like is the Pro Channel. I find it a brilliant idea that is well executed. I like the look and feel of Skylight. Thats five things that I think make Sonar Xx far and away better then Sonar of old. In my view CW has been working on the underlying code of Sonar ever since it first came out. 64 bit and so many options now with the X series they have also worked on the GUI. How we interact with it. They have taken into consideration small single laptop displays and large dual monitor setups. They have done an outstanding job of trying to fit these very different computer models. Because I have had nearly 4 years of working with the X series I have become very fond of it and trust it. I think if you Tom keep an open mind and let us help you in making the transition I think you will also come to it with a great deal of respect.

hi john and thanks for your statement... probably i was just a little frustrated today - but now this has cleared up :-) in general i also like x2 better - probably i am mostly frustrated by the online manual that (i feel) is not very helpful. personally i think that its already hard for a multiple daw user to get the head around all the different nomenclature between programs (i also use logic, ableton and reaper) and then there is the additional issue of the languages...so if some features are moved or renamed within a single program i just get frustrated quickly best regards

No problem Tom. I didn't think you were off base just a little frustrated. I had a lot of this with others with the release of X1. Besides I appreciate your asking me my opinion.

F7, F8, F9, and F10 are some of the shortcuts that I restored from previous versions because I've been using them since Cakewalk for DOS. What you want is: F7 = Go to From F8 = Go to Thru F9 = Edit | Select | From = Now F10 = Edit | Select | Thru = Now Ctrl+F9 = Edit | Select | From = Start Ctrl+F10 = Edit | Select | From = End

yeah - i am right now remapping my old commands - starting form the original x2 assignment - so its not confusing anymore. its funny because using a daw is like riding a bike - so once you are good at it you dont forget it anymore - still with new features its like someone has changed the pedals with the steering - haha
