That's very cool Lance. But I think we're talking more Billboard-level international hits here, or at least the studios and engineers who record that level of work. Show me a Daughtry, or Nickleback or Beyonce etc track done in Sonar and I'll be impressed. And people say it's because they're used to a certain DAW etc etc. I think to insult the biggest ears in the world by saying they use a particular system because they're used to it is pathetic. We're talking about people like Mutt Lange and Bob Rock, to name two of the biggest producers in the history of music. Why in the world would such great minds fall for "an industry standard" if it isn't any good? I keep asking myself why these guys knowingly and willingly work on a particular format? They don't have to, and they don't have to pay for gear either. Yet they always come back to that other DAW, when they're not using tape. I'm not knocking Sonar (I love the damn thang), but I think people should really check the stats and look at the real picture for a change. Sonar is not in the big league, and that's just a statistical fact. The next question then is why..

Lance, that's taking one fairly obscure example out of an entire world of music. Not living in the USA, I have never heard of him. Heard Butterfly of course, but seriously. I want NAMES - BIG ones! :O) As for WHY.. perhaps because CW never releases anything that doesn't hold a surprise or two in the bug dept? I don't trust the platform enough to go on the road with it, from HARD experience. Perhaps because PT have had the biggest ears in the world giving them input for decades now... Perhaps because most big studios use Mac (apparently). All of the above? I think CW should survey it and work out what it will take to get there, if they want to go there, assuming they haven't done surveys already. Perhaps CW doesn't care about being a standard other than their own. :O)

because something else was there for a long time in the studios before Sonar. sonar is getting peoples attention more and more these days but a lot of studios invested buku bucks into pro tools rigs and the industry went with it. Now there are more very good options, but the studios and industry have for the most part stuck with the way things have been for a long time, and a lot of newer companies here pro tools quickly as it has been so prominent before other good options came. Also, again, because pro tools has been around and prominent so long, "pro tools" is what the average music person often refers any DAW being called. I, for one, am glad i was exposed to other options when I got into setting up a DAW some years ago. Lance

LJB But I think we're talking more Billboard-level international hits here, or at least the studios and engineers who record that level of work. The OP didn't specify, and hasn't said more despite being asked for clarification. Which makes me think the OP's initial question wasn't serious and/or sincere but just pot-stirring, meaning I'm gone.

Yes, absolutely. All of these reasons are possible - will we ever know? But the bottom line is that Sonar has a long way to go to compete, numbers-wise. I enjoy Sonar, but I refuse to be blind to the strongpoints of other DAWs or intimidated by a learning curve to discover what I've been missing (or not). I only recently bought PT and many things frustrate me in it, many are far better than X1. That's the nature of the beast and will forever be. But my job is to produce the best possible product for my clients, so I'll use my ears and avoid the PR :O)

It may well be IT! :O I have friends who owned a wine company in Cape Town. The best wine, the most beautiful bottles with paintings of gorgeous ladies on them. Went bakrupt in 4 years. Now they sell a coffee-flavoured redwine with a drab label and the thing is marching off the shelves in 10 countries. As I said... SURVEY :O)

How do you define a studio. If a professional sits in his/her "private" aka home studio and uses Sonar; along with FL Studio, Reason, Native Instruments 'Maschine' and produces NO.1 mix beats for the hip-hop genre. It is not semantics to say Sonar was not used in a Pro Studio setting, when yes, the mastering was done on a Pro Tools console after the mix was transferred to the said 'legacy' pro studio.

Dino Alden (Producer/Engineer) uses Sonar. Mixed the last Cynthesis record (DeEvolution) using Sonar. While not working in the "Popular" music genre, many folks would recognize artists such as Tony McAlpine, Bob Rock, Tommy Aldridge, Vinnie Moore, Rudy Sarzo, Racer X, etc. Incredibly talented engineer... working on major label records... using Sonar.
