do you use clippers?

I'm guessing a few of you do here.. how the heck do you deal with the back of ya head? hehe

I've got to a point where my local barber hasn't got a lot to cut now, although I don't wanna shave it all of.. I figure cutting it short would be good enough (and also hides the grey..hehe)

there is a certain baker who comes to mind for hairstyles, but heck I'm guessing he goes to the saloon and gets it done..hehe

Fog, I feel it is not appropriate for me to offer any advise regarding cutting hair.

John.. short term maybe a good idea.. long term.. well excessive expenditure is a bad thing (e.g. women sometimes have a liking for expensive clothes / shoes / handbags.. to name 3 things)

James she's over charging ya.. hehe

I find it funny outside of London £10.. in London, £5-6 , of course the argument is your paying for what they have to work with, but I give them an easy life..hehe

spacey, I think you posted that before? I'm 95% sure I'll never get a tat..

It's a bit of a wild assumption that clippers get used by many people.

Most folk I know would do the right thing and hand them in to the police.

I thought Bobby Chartlon went for the 'walnut whip' rather than the 'comb over' or 'rafters'...

heck no.. although in Ireland I used to see loads of them when I was younger.. you see them the odd time.. OR you see people with a really funny syrup..

the problem is if I let it grow , I end up like looking like this chap >

but it's only the sides that grow in my case.. Heck I could always do a Keith Flint (not).. maybe he was inspired by Bobby.

I guess if your serious...if I had the same issue and didn't want or didn't have anybody to cut it I'd probably consider that vacuum cleaner trimmer I saw on the tube sometime ago...flow bee or something like that. I guess the bright side is if you make a mess at least you don't have to clean it up.

yer I am serious spacey.. ermm I just got fed up of paying for not a lot of work. I used to work with someone who used to pay £40 for a haircut, that made me laugh as that was the same as 8 haircuts to me. I just have to keep it trimmed so the grey doesn't show up.. I only just turned 36.. recently , it's funny someone at work 3 months older (who I know hhm 26 years).. people think he's a lot younger.hehe

I trimmed it earlier with a grade 3 thing, but I'll probably go over it again with a 2... but the back / behind the ears is the problem area..

the problem with shaving it all of.. well I'm sure there's a fair few dents.. I had a habit of falling off walls etc as a kid. Even at nursery when I decided it would be a good idea to put a ladder against a climbing frame (I was probably 3 at the time)

My wife uses these on me:

    Oster Clipper 76 Classic

I used to use the smaller version...it tugs and yanks at hi speed... this good unit has so much torque that it runs at low speed and comfortably slices the hair clean and smooth.

hehe spacey, I'll stick with the clippers, much like Mike uses, errm Wahl are probably the best known ones here I guess.. I might go over it again tomorrow.. today was a bit of a test run, to see how bad it'd turn out.. but it's still a bit too long.. so time for grade 2 I guess.

VJ yep he used to go Toni & Guy .. joke is when he got his haircut, I hardly noticed.. I can understand women spending such money on a hair cut..

It is now over eighteen months since I had my split ends done, Prior to that it was a year when I last had a real live hair cut to a length that was what be called PC, i.e. passively compliant. At that time I went through what could be described as a change in my perspective, the details of which are irrelevant here.

As of this moment in time when asked, I explain to people I am not growing my hair I am just not having it cut.

I am not sure I make rock music either.

What you do is stand with your back facing a large mirror (a normal bathroom mirror will do) and hold a hand mirror in one hand and the clippers in the other. It takes a little getting used to, as everthing is backwards, but you can at least see what you are doing back there.

I've done this many times (though now I just go to a barber and pay $14). It works fine.

I work with a guy who uses a flowbee! He has 2 of them in case one breaks! he can't stand anyone touching his neck, that's why he uses the flowbee!

problem is, you can always tell when he's used it because it leaves gaps in the back if you are trying to use it yourself - same problem Fog is having with the clippers!

Hold the clippers in one hand, and a hand-held mirror in the other.
Clip with your back towards the bathroom mirror.
You should be able to see the back of your head and the bits you're missing.

(i use this when I shave my head with a razor).

My wife does mine for me, thankfully.
But, in the rare event that I have to do it myself (like if she's out of town), I just take the easy way out and cut 100% @ the same level (size 2 or 3) on my clippers.
    Done.
Of course, I get the inevitable "where are you stationed" questions from the military look of it.
If it's an attractive girl asking, even better.

    If it's horrible, I wear a hat.

Here in Calif we have Super Cuts.

$16 bux plus tip ($3 to $5 whatever i have).

In and out in 20 minutes.

    Basically a barber.

I used to go to a gal (for over 20 years) but the $45 plus tip got too rough in these times.

beagle, I only know that device from waynes world..hehe it reminds me of 2 uk comedians who did a mickey take of "slade".. basically they had a bowl around Dave Hill's hair.. the pudding bowl effect.hehe I don't think I totally butchered the back, but well ah well. it'll grow back. well sorta..lol

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TLm9iBUAogk

slug.. one day I'll razor it but I'll pre long it as I'm sure when you did yours for the first time, I bet you wondered about dents.. me I should have a fair few as I was rather accident prone a kid.. I never grew my hair long either etc.. I dunno , never been one for spending on fortune on such things.

zevo "work" work wise , I can't wear a hat.. so never mind.the plan was to cut it at the start of my hols.. so if it was a total "mess up" It'd have time to grow back.. I did use 3 thing on it, with the blades retracted.

Bapu, well who I go to for years.. because I have been going there so long it's normally £5-6.. which is just under double in dollars I guess. $45 though. jeez.. way too much. It's funny his shop is so old fashioned and it's been used in a few TV adverts.

Personally Fog, I get a number two buzz cut with clippers at a gents hairdresser's in my local town, and they only charge a fiver for a single grade cut, which I think is well wotth it, reason being, dont forget the way a trained hairdresser (barber) can tidy up around the tops of your ears and a nice taper at the back with a razor, finishes the job off nicely
