Tutorials For 700 C&R
Are there any tutorials on the V-Studio 700C&R. The manuals which come with this stuff do not tell me a lot about how to do things. I've got a zillion questions on the Fantom X. For an example, I am using the Getting Started book and in the Initial Settings chapter about playing back MIDI demo songs. I've loaded the song, create a new audio track and etc and it works. Cool. So, that brings questions to mind: For every MIDI track I've got through Fantom X, do I need an audio track? Will all of the Fantom MIDI tracks go through the one audio track? How do I create an arrangement with several different MIDI voices on the Fantom so they are independent of each other? I have been assuming, I could have (for example) 6 MIDI tracks with different voices such as piano, guitar, bass, sax, trumpet, some sort of percussion. When having those tracks, I should be able to adjust the levels and pan them individually. How do I change the voice? (I tried the CH and patch and for some reason, the voice changed to a harpsichord and now I can't get it back to the piano).

So, that brings questions to mind: For every MIDI track I've got through Fantom X, do I need an audio track? You could do it that way if you wanted to record in real time each Midi track to an Audio track after the Midi was recorded. Will all of the Fantom MIDI tracks go through the one audio track? Yes, select Fantom VS 700 stereo for the input on an Audio track, enable input monitor on that track, arm to record . Select all your Midi tracks, disable input monitor on them and any other tracks, press the record button. All your Midi tracks will play and the Audio track will record them. Do you mean triggered and controled independently? You can pan and adjust the channel parameters for each voice independently. You have to study the rest of the pages in the Fantom, it's quite extensive to explain here. How do I change the voice? (I tried the CH and patch and for some reason, the voice changed to a harpsichord and now I can't get it back to the piano). While you have a patch selected in Sonar it rules the road. Change the Channel and Patch in Sonar back to none and re-select the sound you want in the Fantom. That should give you the sound from the Fantom. If you've recorded that patch and channel, it may be imbedded in the data on your Midi track. You'll need to go into the Event Veiw and delete the the patchs instrument listing.

Thanks Crg and Mr Evans. I will be copying and pasting your advice in a Word document so I'll have a paper record. Incidentally, I began with the information and so far so good. Much blessings upon you.

I don’t understand what is happening. The first time I followed some of the instructions given by Mr Evans, everything appeared to be working just fine. I just couldn’t get past assigning a voice to the first Fantom track. I’ve restarted several times and I am gradually losing what I gained. This is what I am doing and what is happening: I opened a new project and created 8 MIDI tracks. I assigned my MIDI controller to each of the tracks. (My MIDI controller is a Yamaha Motif XS-7.) The instructions say: “Each Midi track should have a different Midi Channel. Ch1 to start and go upwards”. I inserted the Fantomm VS synth and used “All Synth Aduio Outputs Stereo). The instructions say, “Pull the newly created fader down and fade up Fantom in the Direct Mixer instead. I guess, I am not sure what that means. Where is the newly created fader. I guess, I am not sure what the “Direct Mixer” is, either. I had assumed it was the mixer that appears as the Fantom VS Editor as it looks like a mixer. I am also thinking, it might be the virtual control surface on the left side of the track view where there is a fader. Incidentally, as in the book on “getting started”, I inserted an audio track. On the Input, I selected, “Fantom VS 1 Primary Output: Stereo”. The Output, I selected, “VS-700 Sub” because my monitors are hooked up to the Sub instead of the Main. My Input, of course is the MIDI controller, which says “Yamaha MOTIF XS7-1 – Omni”. I put that on all of the MIDI channels as I figured the same Input applies to all of them. I was also thinking (probably in error) the Output for each track has to be channeled differently as each track potentially will have a different voice (thus, the different Output channel). So, I want to set the Output for each track as indicated in the directions (“Each Midi track should have a different Midi Channel”). However, the only choice I have which is related to the Fantom is, “FANTOM VS (VS-700)”. For some reason, when I did this earlier, I thought I had more options such as Fantom VS-700. Now, on the Fantom VS Editor, I have a Piano Voice and I have 1 selected, which should be for track 1. I am getting nothing. (When I tried it earlier, I was getting something and was able to change to voice on the Fantom. Now, nothing is happening. However, if I check the VU meter for track 2 in the Track View, the VU Meter responds each time a strike a key on the XS-7 (MIDI controller). But, there isn’t any sound. It doesn’t matter which track I select on the Fantom VS Editor, the response is on track 2 in the Track View. Yes, I do have the MIDI Input Echo enabled, too. I am surely missing something or forgetting to make some sort of setting someplace. It is probably something blaringly simple. I just don't know. Hopefully, I gave enough details for someone to do a diagnosis.

Hi RA. I will go through your questions and answer them the best I can. Firstly I apologize if my instructions could seem confusing. It does not matter if you make a bunch of midi tracks first or Insert Fantom. After inserting the Fantom VS, a extra fader appears on the main Sonar mixer. It is labelled Fantom VS as such and it is the stereo return if you like for the Fantom back into the Sonar main mix. It appears on the console as the extra fader. Connect your monitors to MAIN instead of SUB. It is easier as many defaults are set to MAIN and you have to move them if you want to reassign things to SUB. Time to mention the 3 Mixers in use now! RA you have pointed out something very important. There are a grand total of 3 Mixers inside the V Studio system now. Mixer 1 is the main Sonar Mixer and it is of course where all the serious mixing takes place. Plug Ins etc Faders. This is the mixer that all Sonar users have. V Studio owners get a second Mixer 2 (The DIRECT MIXER) (Command + IN/O) (The direct mixer can be reached on the Mic Pre mixer page, just go to the Direct TAB) The DIRECT mixer allows all the inputs that are connected to the VS700R to go straight through to the MAIN OUTS. (Where you monitors are) This mixer is fast and has no latency. Terrific for all monitring during tracking. Not only does it bring the VS700R inputs through to the MAIN OUTS, it also takes a split of the Fantom output and sends it through to the MAIN OUTS. The Mixer 1 Sonar mixer can introduce latency due to settings and ASIO sound card settings can all effect how fast input monitoring can take place from the Sonar Mixer. This mixer can also slow down Fantom's response as well. (Super fast computers get over this limitation though) There is also a MIXER 3 Fantom Mixer Fantom has its own mixer with faders and sends to the internal effects system within Fantom itself. V Studio people have to keep track of 3 mixers all the time and be onto what they are all doing at any given time. So when I say pull the Fantom Fader down I mean the fader that was created in the Sonar mixer after the soft synth was inserted. Then put up the fader on the Direct mixer. Now you will hear Fantom again just like before but without latency. You have set up your midi tracks fine. Inputs to those are from your controller. Each output is sent to Fantom VS and has its own midi channel starting from 1 through to as many channels you are using. Now you go to Fantom and go the page where the midi channels are listed 1 throguh to 16. Click on those one by one and set up the voice you want to hear on those. Select and park on a midi track. Echo the input and you should be on Midi track 1 and hear voice 1 for that channel from Fantom. By simply selecting and parking on midi track 2 then you should hear the voice you have assigned to channel 2 of Fantom. And so on right to 16 is needed. Sometimes Fantom wont sound. You need to start and stop transport for a second. I have been exploring the setting up of the Fantom mixer. This can create a balance for monitoring manily. The Midi track faders can also create a balance there (on the Main Sonar Mixer) There are no less than 5 internal Fantom effects processors. They sound very good and there is every reason Fantom can sound very produced even if the signal is leaving just as a stereo stem. After you are all happy with the Fantom midi tracks the procedure above and as Craig has pointed out an even easier way is to create a set of Audio tracks for each Fantom midi track. You can set the inputs of the audio tracks to Fantom VS as well. Solo the Fantom midi tracks one by one and record them all one by one over to the audio tracks. Then you have the ultimate 16 channels of complete individual processing on those Fantom tracks for final mixing. Do all this with the main Fantom fader down still on the Sonar mixer and up on the Direct mixer. But once all this audio is transferred you can pull down the Fantom on the Direct mixer and bring up the audio tracks instead. The timing will still be tight and in sync. Fantom is now sitting around with nothing to do and you have 16 audio tracks playing back! You could do it all over again and end up with 32 Fantom tracks. Its a good idea to convert all these Fantom tracks over to audio as then its done if you ever need it later etc. You might not be attached to Fantom for some reason (eg no VS700R) I am loving the sound of it more day by day. It is truely a magnificent instrument. To be able to build up such powerful music in it and so fast is incredible. When you start adding to that the sound of the internal Sonar instruments then things can get really interesting.

Each track should have a different Midi channel, refers to the inputs not the outputs. As far as I know, you have two sources of output from the Fantom. The primary outputs, which work in the created Synth audio output track, and the Fantom VS700 audio outputs in the audio drop down list which you would put in the input of an audio track. You can put the Primary outputs, Left, Right, Stereo into the inputs of an audio track but they will change to a Synth audio output track with no record button. If your keyboard-controller outputs to channel 1 for the main keyboard and you don't have different channels for split keyboard, dual sound layer keyboard, etc., then ch 1 is your only input. Check the output channels on your keyboard. I haven't been able to get the 16 Fantom channels to output to sixteen different Midi tracks. Have you? I know they're listed, but no sound when set up that way. I do know that on the Midi page of the Fantom Editor, you can assign each of the sixteen channels inputs to a specific input, namely Ch 1 if so desired, and create a complex voicing. If your keyboard outputs to different channels for backing tracks with drums, bass, and various backing instruments, the Fantom will record those instruments to seperate channels based on your keyboard channel outputs. There are different ways to set up the Fantom to play your chosen input voice or just receive the basic Midi data to trigger the Fantom voice. ???

I use 1 thru 16 on my Midi Merger and my keyboard sends to 16 different tracks for different instruments the keyboard will send. Mine sends main keyboard on 4, bass on 2, Drums on 10, etc.

Regarding the MIDI inputs from the Yamaha MOTIF XS7, these are the options I have: Yamaha MOTIF XS7-1 which will give me a choice of MIDI Omni, ch 1, ch 2 . . . ch 16. Yamaha MOTIF XS7-2 which will give me a choice of MIDI Omni, ch 1, ch 2 . . . ch 16. Yamaha MOTIF XS7-3 which will give me a choice of MIDI Omni, ch 1, ch 2 . . . ch 16. Yamaha MOTIF XS7-4 which will give me a choice of MIDI Omni, ch 1, ch 2 . . . ch 16. The bottom line is, there are a whole bunch of input options. I've played around with assigning some of the options and I am not sure how I get them to work. When I've had it on Yamaha MOTIF SX7-1 Omni, I get a response in the VU meter which is consistent with note strikes on the keyboard. However, no sound which is getting rather frustrating as I have spent several hours today trying to figure out what settings I am missing. I've tried a host of different things to no avail. At one point, I was able to get the piano voice going through but only on the one track. I tried changing the tracks in the VS Edidtor but that doesn't do anything. I was thinking the tracks in the Track View would coincide with the tracks in the VS Editor's mixer.

The goal I am trying to achieve is to have, for example, several MIDI tracks being played through the Fantom simultaneously with different voices (e.g. track 1: Piano; track 2: guitar; track 3: trumpet; track 4: bass; track 5; another trumpet; track 6: sax; and etc.) I want to be able to record or write MIDI data in the different MIDI tracks so they could be played with different voices simultaneously.

I don't know what the Direct Mixer does. It doesn't seem to have any effect at all, even when I was able to get the voice to play through the speakers. I am not sure what I did but I am now getting a piano voice being played for my track 1. I can change the voice in the Editor, which his what I want to do. However, I can't get it to work for the other tracks.

I wrote an e-mail to tech support and got a response. However, my issue with the sound is still not resolved. Tech Support sent a project with 1 audio track and 16 MIDI tracks. It downloaded without a hitch. I opened it and all appears to be working except I can not get any sound. I routed my MOTIF XS7 as the input, which is my MIDI controller. Each track I click on appears to be working. The VU meter responds according to how I am hitting keys on the keyboard. But, there isn't any sound. I've tried both Main and Sub on the audio output and neither work (I should use Sub because my monitors are hooked up to them because of the cables I have). Right now, I am mulling through the manual which is in the VS Editor's Help Menu. Maybe I'll get a clue.

I don't know what this means: There is a little icon in the lower right corner of the Sonar screen (next to the time (clock)). The icon looks like a little keyboard with two little red lights on it. When I hover the mouse over the icon, it says "MIDI input/output Activity". I am wondering if one light means "input" and the other means "output". The little red light on the RIGHT is blinking red. The one on the left is off. I wonder if it means there is a problem with the MIDI output???????

This is REALLY getting frustrating as I am spending lots of hours on trying to get this figured out and getting absolutely no where. The fix has got to be in front of me but I just can't see it. I restarted the project I was sent and I got NOTHING. I mean, the VU meters aren't even responding and all of the settings are the same. I rebooted the computer and restarted Sonar and still NOTHING. The frustrating part of the whole thing is that I haven't even started. I just can't wait until things get going if this is any omen as to what is going to happen. The VS2480 never had these type of problems. I used it pretty much right out of the box, the way this thing has been advertised as to how easy it is to get started.
