Cannot get video to work. Trying EVERY type of format!
Maybe this problem is specific to my machine, because Sonar used to be MUCH better with video. I never remember having so many problems with video in Sonar!! I was given an H.264 video file, which used to work with Sonar (back in the 7 days? am I making that up?). I get this message when trying to load: OK, no prob. So I tried converting it to a format that has always worked for me: DVCPRO .avi. I get the same message! I've also tried JPG2000, and a number of other formats, but nothing seems to work. Someone please help! Thanks! -Alex

I should also say... I'm running Sonar 8.5 on Vista 64bit with 32 GB of RAM and a decent video card (don't have model ATM). i7 processor, 2.66 GHz. Thanks! -Alex

Did you install 8.5 as the downloadable update for 8.0, or as the full version (DVDs)? Seems like there's been a fair amount of glitchy behavior attributed to the former.

I downloaded 8.5-- and should say that 8.3.1 wasnt so hot with video either... just now I'm almost completely non-functional.

you probably juz lack of some codecs, get the k-lite codecs pack free, they also have a 64 bit pack...

I think I figured it out... I've been converting .mov's - .avi's in Quicktime, which apparently is a no-no. 32-bit Sonar works just fine with these video files! Soooo. if I want to be working in Sonar x64, what program should I use to convert video? Thanks!

QuickTime movie formats are 32 bit and thus will not import into Sonar x64. This is an Apple issue, not a Cakewalk issue. FYI, best video formats to work with in Sonar are wmv and avi. HTH

Well, you could ask that guy who's always adventizing video converters on the site..... :-P J/K of course. I have Premier Pro, so I use that if I need to convert anything. Can't recommend any converters as I don't use/trust them (at least not the free ones). Can't you ask him/her to send you WMV files instead? Installing freebies, especially codecs, can mess up the playback of some file formats. This is an advice I have been giving by the good people in the Adobe forums.

most people working on films don't even know what wmv is, seriously. US is such a mac country- it's all about the MOV unfortunately. What a big pain in the butt!

I know how you feel. I don't understand why people can't give you what you need. You'd think that they would be willing to help you out and make the job easier for you. WMV is a standard format on the PC, so I'm sure they could provide it to you if they wanted.
