Reverted to 8.3

A certain project I've been working on has shown increasing instability the more complex & dense it became.

The main symptom has been a very repeatable dropout at the same place in the song. Increasing latencies & buffer sizes seemed to provide a solution but when I tried to export down to a stereo .wav, SONAR didn't want to know, saying there was insufficient memory.

I've got 4Gig on board my 32Bit system without the 3G switch enabled - would this be a good move?

Anyway, after trying all sorts of possible solutions, increasing latency etc to ridiculously high levels, re-profiled my soundcard, booting up not just SONAR but the entire pc, it still wouldn't do an export.

In desperation, I fired up 8.3, loaded the project and it proceeded to export the project without a single complaint.

Interestingly, with the project loaded, 8.3 was using 966Mb of RAM, whilst 8.5 was consuming about 1.2Gig

Also, the settings in 8.3 were at minimal latency  - I didn't have to raise it in order to achieve a successful export.

So, has anyone else noticed similar problems with 8.5?

This is, by far, the most complex project I've ever put together - 74 audio tracks, about 110 plugs, 65 V-Vocal instances (all running live), with about a dozen or so busses.

At one point, I started to freeze tracks but even with about 25 frozen, 8.5 still wouldn't let me export.

Any ideas people?

Try saving the project from 8.3 to a new filename etc and then loading and exporting from 8.5.

And I would not make any changes to the /3gb switch until you have understood that it can cause your system to not boot at all.

Yeah, I've read about that before Phil. It's not something I'd do routinely, I'd rather wait until I'm in a position to go for a new machine.

    Thanks Mike!

65 V-Vocal instances?  If I run more than one, Sonar (8.3.1) crashes.  I'm amazed you could even run the project with that many V-Vocals in it.

Right, I've now got another project which refuses to even play (out of memory) in either 8.3 or 8.5

This project contains no effects, no plugs, NO V-Vocal - just 14 instances of EWQLSO.

This project used to play perfectly, now it won't play at all.

    4Gig of onboard RAM
Task Manager reports 3.2Gig available (normal?)
SONAR blips out when trying to exceed about 1.9Gig

Memory footprint prior to loading SONAR is 157Mb, so windows can't be hogging RAM for it's own use.

    Any ideas anyone?

I am relieved to read others have this problem, too. It happened to me in version 6 already. The convert to bundle and reimport did not work. In exasperation, I dragged out all the clips and rebuilt the entire project. Ouch!!!

If you're running under a 32-bit version of Windows, doesn't that mean that each individual application is limited to 2GB of memory? Maybe that's why SONAR is "crying" when trying exceed 1.9GB.

More info about the memory limit here: http://www.brianmadden.co...es-it-really-mean.aspx

    Yeah, interesting read Scott.

I think my main worry is the fact that the older project with just the 14 EWQLSO instances now won't play, either under 8.3 or 8.5.

I can't freeze/bounce/export within the project, so I might be forced to dump the MIDI & synths out, one at a time into a new project, which will be a real PITA as I've got loads of tempo changes in the old version.

I'm not surprised the later prject isapproacihng the limit of my system, as it's got a "statistical density" that I've not got close to in previous projects.

Admittedly, I'm a nood here. But my first project wouldn't export properly either. It's not as complex as what you guys are doing (74 track! Yikes!).... but my 16 track project (6 audio, 1 Session Drummer and 9 instances of Dimension Pro) wouldn't export without artifacts...

Changing my export setting to exclude "Fast Bounce" did the trick for me. Hopefully that'll help someone...

Try turning all synths off in the synth rack, then turn on one at a time to freeze.

And I would not make any changes to the /3gb switch until you have understood that it can cause your system to not boot at all.

    Phil

Only if you don't know how to apply it.  If done correctly, it becomes a non-issue since you can just go back to the previous boot at any time (assuming the /3GB switch doesn't work for you).  It's super easy to do though (nothing complex at all).  However, Bristol found another solution, so he's now back in business.

By the way, Bristol, Addams is right about disabling "Fast Bounce".  Once the projects get complex, like yours, you'll need to resort to this when exporting when using EWQL stuff.  Actually, at least with the PLAY version, I first play the project once to get all the samples loaded and then use Real Time Bounce when exporting.  That's the only way I can get a 100% successful export.

    Take care!

Hey I have had some issues ugrading to 8.5 also.  A couple of files will crash at certain places just as Bristol_Jonesey discribes.   In each case I have been able to narrow things down to a certain clip causing trouble.  It will usually have audio snap on it.  I export the audio in that track,  wipe/delete it, and load the .wav back in.  That fixes it for me.
