A photo of Butch Vig's Home Studio & Mutt Lang's Switzerland Home Studio

Who is BUTCH VIG some might ask?  Mr.VIG is best known as the drummer for alternative rock band GARBAGE.  But he is better known internationally as the producer of NIRVANA's NEVERMIND.
This is a photo of his home studio. Nice to see such a modest space for such a big producer. Notice there are NO bass traps in the room. It's not all about the gear but the man behind the knobs.
Mr.VIG did use this home studio to mix GREEN DAYS single "Last Of The American Girls"

I would love to have a pair of those BAREFOOT MONITORS

Mr.LANGS  you should know who he is.

I have the same chair (as the top photo). Herman Miller Aeron.

Just not on the DAW side of the room. It's on my desk side of the studio.

BTW, one screen? One screen? How does he do such great stunts with such a small monitor?

Quite a contrast.  You could play badminton in "Mr Lang's", yet would struggle to fit a ping-pong table into "Mr Vig's". Good to see BV has a POD X3 though, I own one of those myself.

    Other interesting notes:

    1. Monitors are backed to the wall
    2. The mix position appears to not be centered between two walls
    3. No side absorption panels
    4. Monitors are not 30% into the room

Mebee none of that matters to a pro?

These pics were originally posted over at gearslutz and folks were asking butch about the monitor placement, asking if they interacted because the 2 sets are so close together and did he have problems with refelctions from the walls....  He said he has had no issues there and has actually take a number of big projects home to mix them there.

You'd have to think that with those drums being so close there is going to be some serious buzz and low end resonance.

I think you are only getting half the story.

The real story is that a "pro" can travel from room to room and quickly understand how their brain and ears are acclimating, and then they can do lots of good work.

But it probably doesn't hurt that the speakers on the desk cost $20k or $30k.

And hey, he may be running ARC. :-)

You should get some photos of the other rooms he works in before you focus on this bedroom studio as if it's some sort of proof that there is no benefit to acoustics management.

I'm a big fan of Mr Vigs catalog... its seems to all be close mic'd heavy pop. Love it!

If he had a quiet singer or acoustic guitarist in there... he'd have traffic noise bleeding in just like everyone else and he'd have the sound of the room, and has been mentioned the resonance of the drum kit... etc. etc.

Heck I've been mixing at my kitchen counter with auratones for a few weeks because I like the view out the window. It's springtime here and the leaves and flowers are at their best.

I check the mixes in my real room.

    best regards,
    mike
