What do you mean the patch for windows 8 won't be out till later this year? What patch are you talking about?

Don't quote me but I recall reading that the patch was for compatibility with touch screens etc. for Win 8. I tried X1 & X2 with the "demo" of Win 8 and they run fine. I wasn't able to do a true test to see about performance boosts, but if you search the blogs on the Cakewalk site Noel I think did full side by side comparison.

I've been using Windows 8 with X2 since X2 shipped. Haven't had any issues that I can attribute to Windows 8. However, as was mentioned, you need to be sure that any hardware you are using has drivers that are compatible with Windows 8. Also be aware that at this time most Roland/Cakewalk gear does not work at all with Windows 8.

It has a MIDI out socket, do you have a MIDI interface?

Win 7 drivers may work,  I'd be interested to know as I have a A-300. Windows 8 may even provide generic drivers.
I think Roland Octapad SPD-30 should work as that uses generic USB drivers in Win 7, so Win 8 should be the same in theory.

If Roland are any good there're be releasing Windows 8 drivers soon. Fingers crossed.

Here is a guide that will help those of you installing older drivers to Win 8. This should work for most drivers but may not for all. The person who wrote it was using an Edirol device so I believe it will work for most Cakewalk, Edirol, and Roland products. Make sure to use the latest driver and the correct 64bit or 32bit one based on your OS.

When I tested Windows 8 all my drivers worked well. My drivers include the Edirol M 16 DX and Cakewalk UM 3G USB MIDI interface times 2.

This was a Windows 8 64 bit RTM version.

I'm not too sure where the notion came from that Vista/Win 7 drivers don't work with it.

I won't be making the switch until proper Windows 8 drivers are available. I can run my MOTU gear, but I get regular crashes in the drivers.

In some cases the generic Windows drivers will be far more reliable (assuming they work with your system) as Microsoft tests them far more extensively nowadays. For my Roland Octapad for instance I have a choice of Roland USB MIDI drivers or Microsoft drivers for Win 7. I'm going with the Microsoft drivers as Roland only recommends using their drivers only if the OS drivers won't work (at least on one web page, the situation is confusing however). Sound cards - well that could be a different situation.

    @Chico

Line 6 support and user forums here, go Windows 8 if you can (otherwise you will probably want to upgrade later on and it will cost you more $$$ and hassle):
    http://uk.line6.com/support/community/support

You need to find out if their drivers work.

I will be ordering Windows 8 to get the low introductory price, but I don't plan to install it for a while. I really like Windows 7. I have the Windows 8 RTM version on another computer and I must say I'm not crazy about it. The Metro screen is ok, but I'm not comfortable navigating around it yet. It will take a while to get used to.

EDIT: I might change my mind on that. Apparently if you download Windows 8, but don't install it, you have to do a complete rebuild instead of an upgrade. I absolutely refuse to do a rebuild so....

    The Metro screen

Microsoft has abandoned and now deprecates the term Metro. Reportedly this is the result of a trademark infringement threat from another entity.

I am curious about this. The introductory price sure makes this tempting. I am extremely happy with win7 and scared to death about the touch centric stuff in win8, but I am very interested in this skydrive integration. Just read a review that this was even more elegantly implemented than Apple's iCloud, which is pretty neat. And Skydrive works like a charm on my iThingys as well.

I'm thinking I will buy the two lisences I need, try it out on one machine to begin with and see how it is to use before I make up my mind. In the future it will probably be great to have the upgrade path anyway...

I plan on migrating for the more even workload distribution across all four/eight cores.

Has anyone tried it with a Saffire interface? I like my pro24dsp (although latency could be better) and can't find anything about Win8 on focusrite's website...

I actually haven't touched it at all! Win7 I was testing long before it was released and worked on it until I could purchase a lisence. I was reluctant to upgrade but the more I read about the new ecosystem the more interested I'm becoming. I'll buy the upgrades next week to check it out. It's too cheap not to!
