honestly I am disappointed and to tell you the truth depressed

Well I upgraded,I Always do,I have used Sonar since the one before sonar x1,it came with my first interface.I own reason, protools,fl studio, ableton live and now after getting a 2014 macbook pro as a wedding gift from my wife, logic, but I prefer sonar.I write 90 percent of my music on it.But nothing in the new version has me that excited.I would have liked to see new content for dimension pro or maybe some actual drum kits for session drummer pro that were any good. The FX amp rx chains sounded like the usual terrible amp sims and it seems a bit slow.Could be I have a fast powerful mac and no viable way to use my favorite DAW on it,bootcamp-failed,virtual machines fail.So i can now run it on my PC which is much much slower than my mac or use Daws that I have a hard time writing on.Depressing, almost makes me want to quit altogether.

That sucks. I feel for you.
It really helps to have a decently powered machine to run these latest versions of powerful software.

I believe there are folks here and in other forums that have had success running Sonar under bootcamp on macs. Was it a Sonar problem, or are you having trouble setting up bootcamp?

I don't look to CW for content. Its nice for beginners to have loops and a full sample player but I have many hardware synths plus a bunch of software synths. There is really nothing CW could offer in the content area I would want. That said I have Rapture and Z3TA 2.

I have other DAWs too. I don't use them. I'm not in the least depressed about Sonar Platinum. In fact I'm rather excited by the fact I will be getting new and useful features through out the year.

I like the additions already in Platinum which will make using it just that much easier for me. Besides I can't imagine anyone being depressed by a new DAW.

If you are thinking of quiting over it that seems a little extreme to me.

So you have 5 other DAWS installed, but you prefer Sonar, you're kinda MAC based, 2 posts since Sept 2014, you're using a laptop with bootcamp, you're not excited about Dimension Pro staying the same, and not excited about Session Drummer staying the same, you can't remember which version of Cakewalk Sonar you had before X1, and you're somewhat depressed about it all. Hopefully, that sums it up. Now, how can we help you ?

Really, there's plenty of help here, just post your specs, and specific issues, don't quit yet.

Cakewalk by Bandlab, Cubase, RME Babyface Pro, Intel i7 3770K @3.5Ghz, Asus P8Z77-VPro/Thunderbolt, 32GB DDR3 RAM, GeForce GTX 660 Ti, 250 GB OS SSD, 2TB HDD samples, Win 10 Pro 64 bit, backed up by Macrium Reflect, Novation Impulse 61 Midi Key Controller, Tannoy Active Near Field Monitors, Guitars by Vantage, Gibson, Yamaki and Ovation.

As far as i'm concerned the OP has a point about Dimension pro, the very same thing i was peeved about when i saw this update. Dimension is what, 7 years old now? C'mon Cakewalk!!!
Either you're gonna provide some decent sounds or you're not. This neglect thing is getting a bit old (get it? Old!). And if you're not gonna service Session Drummer then throw the stupid thing out all together; no need to have rubbish clogging-up the closet! And while you're there Cakewalk, revamp Rapture and give us a dedicated Arp please. Contrary to popular mentality, people have a right to complain about what they see as shortcomings in Sonar. What do we have to do, turn-up with a bazooka at Cakewalk head-office and force them to do upgrades at gunpoint, what's it gonna take? Waiting several years just to be stuck with the same old low-grade outdated sounds is quite frankly, deplorable! And finding no new upgrade after several years can be kind of depressing, i get the OP totally!

When a car is getting behind the times it needs more than just a lick of paint and new tires. Take a look at what's old and aging then revamp it with read-deal improvements, or why do we bother paying? Even Motu digital Performer might blindside you if you keep-up this apathetic complacency trip. Us EDM producers wish to use this DAW too y'know! A solid hardcore top-tier rompler is the shining glory of any DAW, so where is it?? My 5 cents.

I actually believe Cakewalk have put themselves in a great position to provide everything you are all asking for, and more besides. Resources are finite and I believe that Cakewalk, have navigated the various changes of ownership brilliantly over the last 5 years and the future looks bright. Reason for this is that you have to have a stable, modern platform to build on. The new UI from X1 onwards, Skylight, continuous improvements to the audio engine and increased stability since then, are all the correct foundations to now build on. The new delivery model is innovative and a brilliant move too IMO. When everything is geared to a year end, or major update schedule, that's the old skool method of software product development which has greater risk of bugs and half finished features escaping into the product. Now, each enhancement is a smaller step change, less risky and stands greater chance of being tested properly. Am I a fanboi, no, but I have worked in the commercial software industry since 1978, and still do, and I see everything right in what Cakewalk are doing right now.

Isn't it funny. Years of people screaming. No more plugins and shiny things. We want a core product that's stable.

Finally Cakewalk are in a position to do this with Gibsons support and now people are complaining about the old addon content being rubbish.

Just goes to show.

@drone7 "What do we have to do, turn-up with a bazooka at Cakewalk head-office and force them to do upgrades at gunpoint, what's it gonan take?"

Wow - for starters, DAW software developers focus on tools for us to record, edit, publish. Along the way we sometimes get amp sims and soft synths, but I don't look to Cake or any of the DAW developers to provide those tools for me and none of those get me in the checkout lane. There are companies that focus on those types of products and that is where I shop. All this whining is wimpy. Be thankful for the amazing tools you have to make your own content. Use Sonar, Reaper, Cubase, anything and make some music. (Did I read the word deplorable in regards to D-Pro?) The OP can afford "6" daws and is complaining about his laptop and the lack of good amp sims. That's somewhere in the ball park of $2500 to $3000 investment in DAWS!! A great amp sim is under 2 bills (S-gear), all kinds of great synths are out there just for the buying. After spending money on "6" daws, then drop in here to complain that this new version didn't provide people with Les Pauls and Korg Workstations. What it does provide are solid / reliable recording tools with a great workflow. No, it won't bring you actual cake.

I have installed new SONAR yesterday. It still does not write music on itself! I refuse to use included AD2 or create new kits in Session Drummer, I have just expected that what I had starts to sound better. But it still sound crappy. Very disappointed. Also I have started to use Sonar 1965 on БЭСМ-6 computer, I have just forgot all my previous accounts

Logic has other synths and stuff that might work in sonar if you can use a program to network the 2 computers like say midi over lan or another and then use the mac as processor for all your synth processing offloaded from your main DAW. This will free up processing power on your computer that you use Sonar on. I would love to have a mac so I could run other software that is not available to me on PC but I would still use my PC to record using Sonar, I would not give up on getting band camp to work. Try finding someone who has been there and done that.

Not I... there is actually quite a bit free content for DP out there to be had. My only "gripe" with DP is not having the ability to assign ratings to patches so they would be easier to find later (some free content exists it their own folders/programs), but this is common to most every synth.

ASUS ROG Maximus X Hero (Wi-Fi AC), i7-8700k, 16GB RAM, GTX-1070Ti, Win 10 Pro, Saffire PRO 24 DSP, A-300 PRO, plus numerous gadgets and gizmos that make or manipulate sound in some way.

While I fully support including legacy products for compatibility and also shop elsewhere for sounds and fx, I don't think Dimension is up to scratch as a serious rompler anymore. I've used it in a pinch but the average sounds are so bad that I just don't go for it until I have to. No way have I checked out all free sounds, I haven't even checked all regular sounds because whenever I do try/need/find one, I'm disappointed. Sometimes more sounds isn't good.

I really hope the OP doesn't take this as support for him/her because it's not. I agree with all the rebuttals, the defense of Dimension Pro just seemed really weird to me.

Yes, even trolls are sometimes right, like a broken clock is twice a day. Not I am calling anyone specifically here a troll. Some people just have a way saying things wrong. I do it myself sometimes. but I always recognize it at some point, and come back to the Great Truth: Sonar is as good as it gets, and I want it to get better.

Let us all meditate on that: Every day in every way, Sonar is getting better and better.

And I agree that updating Dimension Pro is a valid request.

I see your point and agree to an extent, but personally I'd rather the focus be elsewhere.  Most people that have been doing this for a while have amassed a small arsenal of other kit, at least I have.  But I do see some humor in it, especially "Roland Groove Synth" which reminds me of my Roland MT-32 from 1988.

Question: has anyone here actually used all of the existing free content in Dim Pro?   Just curious.

Not I... there is actually quite a bit free content for DP out there to be had. My only "gripe" with DP is not having the ability to assign ratings to patches so they would be easier to find later (some free content exists it their own folders/programs), but this is common to most every synth.

Just a thought.  I just got through pulling a bunch of free patches for Dimension Pro off the web, and went through the decompression and proper folder placement and such.

Couldn't you manually copy the patches you find usable, into one or more folders that you could then set up with differing rating tiers?  The details would be up to you - whatever best suits your needs, but with some sort of approach like this I would imagine you could make it lots easier to find entire folders and sub-folders that contained nothing but patches you value using - thus cutting your search time way down.

I happen to have an ENORMOUS collection of every single DX* sound ever released by Yamaha, in multiple formats, one of which is Dimension Pro.  There are literally approximately 40,000 presets in this collection alone.

I began building folders of patches I thought could be used for something, and while I have a long way to go because of the sheer number of them, When I DO want to use a DX* sound (DX7, DX9, TX816, whatever), I first go to the folders and sub-folders to see if any of the sounds I had already determined I liked might work.

(I have the same collection of presets for use in Kontakt 5, and for FM8, and the same approach is used there)

Would something like the above give you what you are looking for?  Obviously, the enormity of patches I have means a lifetime of manually going through those patches, but I think building folders of sounds you like - grouped in whatever structure makes sense to you, might be quite useful.

In my view, if this release isn't your first DAW, and you've been writing or playing for any length of time, you likely already have better VST's than come with any DAW. Kontakt, OmniSphere, Synthmaster, Zebra, Diva, Blue II, etc...no DAW-provided content can touch these.

I don't want more content, I have more than I can store. I want my DAW to be the best it can be, as that's what I'm really paying for.

If this is your first DAW, then DimPro is a good start, though you'll likely tire of it fairly quickly.

The thing is, the specs and what's new are all there to see for the "shiny stuff". So I don't quite understand why people upgrade if they don't like what they get, they should know what they are getting...
