how do you get around in Sonar?

how do you get around in Sonar?
As far as moving up and down the tracks in TV and selecting. (via querty keyboard)

I work like I'm still on Pro-Audio9. Well sort of. And it doesn't work too well.
You would think that just moving the up/down arrow would do it (as in Pro audio9).
I mean, wherever you scroll to should be the track you want, yes? But no, you have to hit comma.
Why? what's the point.

Example: Even if you double clik a midi clip for piano roll, it doesn't necassarily select the track. So, like, then using your solo shortcut or something, some other track solos.

This has been bugging me for a long time and I know I must be missing something. Am I?

What do you guys/gals do?

I use the mouse/mouse wheel for getting around in Sonar.  I rarely use the keyboard.

I just hate meece with a passion.
Maybe it's my mouse though. It's at least 10 years old.

But still, Haven't you guys noticed that sometime's the track you land on isn't the active track. I know it will officially become active once you clik on the little 1/8" left upper corner of the track.
I guess it's just the way it is but it would sure be nice if clicking or scrolling to anywhere in the track, made it "the track".

that is so quick to do with a mouse.

do yourself a favor, and get the right tools for the job.

once you get past the 'learning curve' and get comfy with the mouse, you'll never look back.

If you're using a 10 yr old mouse, you probably don't even have a scroll wheel! That alone makes it 50 times faster. But get a new one with the left/right scroll as well, then you can scroll up and down, left and right, and move the mouse. It's brilliant.

Perfect forum for it, but if anyone has some great shortcuts they like to use for moving quickly around, I'd/we'd love to know. I want a shortcut to help with zooming. I use 'W' for start of track and 'F' to fit windows all the time, but that's it. Would love to know if there are any more good ones. Or keybindings that we can make that might be useful.

FBB. You don't say 'How' ?

Matt. Ok. cool. Can you point me to a link of a mouse like you are referring to. And yes, I have a wheel.

My shortcuts off the top of my head:
F9 set Now. F10 set thru
F7 go to now. F8 go to thru

    comma- solo
    N- toggle snap on/off
    j - snap settings

    C-console
    Q quantize
    F fit
    K markers

A new one that I'm trying out is pretty cool considering either a mouse or guitar or hamburger is in the right hand and left hand doing the querty. this makes the left hand reach easy.
    (it's like a slow rewind/fast forward)
    Tab- go to next measure
    and
    cntrl/Tab- go to previous measure

    these are all on 8.53
still thinking about X1. But, I'm thinking the envelope navigation is just too clumsy to deal with. I did my first clip envelope today and it was like, 'are you kidding me'.....

I prefer wired.  A wireless mouse contains additional electrics and requires a battery, making it significantly heavier and less maneuverable.

Ok, I need a new Mouse.
I'm looking at meece here: http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=100008652%20600009586&IsNodeId=1

So, as far as the 'wired' part goes, I assume you mean USB? yes/no?

See any good ones at that link?

I have an old wireless (ps2) keyboard. It works. Any advantages to getting a new keyboard?

    I use a control surface.

The newer wireless mice now only use a single AA battery and are relatively light.  BAtteries last a lot longer now also.  YMMV!

Pop on down to a best buy or other computer store and test drive mice.  Every hand is different and it is one thing worth paying a few extra bucks for if necessary.  I keep one hand on the mouse (or my controller keyboard) and the other hovering over the computer keyboard, each hand doing what is easiest to do.  Needless to say, I don't do many alt Crtl shift keyboard moves.

Tim, I've often wished that when naming the tracks I could hit arrow down and it would go to the next one.  Instead it seems to go to all the little icons on the track...I give up after a couple.  And yes, I wish that when you clicked on a track ONCE that would be the track.  Unfortunately, it takes a couple times for some reason.  And yes, I vote for anywhere in the track, not just over on the left.

I guess I could go on awhile, but I won't.  I've gotten used to it by now.  Just wish a few things were different, as with anything I guess.

I didn't know about comma for solo.  I'll have to try that.  I mostly use keyboard shortcuts for getting around in PRV.  But that's not even necessary in X1 since they have a 'smart' pointer (or whatever it's called) now.  It's actually quite cool!  And all the shortcuts for navigating between views have changed, but I can probably figure that out soon.  Next time I do a piece when I'm not in a big hurry, I might actually try to USE X1!  :)

Thanks for saying what I was trying to say Janet.
Actually, its the " / "  (slash) thing I use for solo. I meant the comma is used to "select" the track. That really actually does it.

sorry for the confusion. Yea, a few things in X1 keep me away, Mostly accessing the smart tool. I really don't get the logic in that one.

Slash for solo?  Well, I'll have to try to remember that.

But that smart tool is REALLY cool!  I thought I wouldn't like it either, but it took about 3 seconds to figure it out and get used to it. (and that's about light-speed for me)  I use the keyboard shortcuts in 8.5 and can get around with it pretty fast, as much as I use midi.  But the smart tool is about, well, the best thing since sliced bread.  :)

there is a bindings preset in X1 for legacy 8.5 bindings. just import it.

The smart tool is cool (not the hub) for everything except envelopes. There it falls really short I think. Mostly because accessing the hub is so convoluted. And, to narrow my peeve further, mostly with clip envelopes. JMO.

I keep looking for something I'm missing like a secret shorcut or something that would make it easier. Like for one, keeping the hub open till I close it. Still it's not too user friendly. But then I've never used any of the mouse "tools". I don't see the point.

You mean you can make X1 act more like 8.5?  I'd probably screw something up if I tried it, since I've used a binding for anything on a computer before.  lol

And I guess I don't used envelopes that much except for volume, etc., and that's just to add nodes and move the lines up and down, etc.  You know...sorta like a 5 year old would do stuff. :)

But the smart tool is still REALLY cool for PRV. :)

if you use your mouse more you'd get it.  using the mouse middle click (click on the wheel) brings up the HUD (the smart tool floating selector) which allows you to make smart tool adjustments "on the fly"

for example, when working with envelopes in X1, to switch between the clip and envelope view, you either go to the properties of the track in the track view and change it from the pull down menu, or you just click the middle mouse button wherever you are in the track view and then select the envelope you want from the pull down menu right there in front of you.  saves you from having to move to the properties and find the correct pull down menu - it puts the menu where YOU are already looking.

I think this argument has been beatin to death upstairs.

But, a right clik on a clip, choose envelope, gain, is a lot easier, more fluid, than say "T" or middle button, float, clip  etc etc.

As I said, I'm probably missing something. I mean either the program is stupid or I'm stupid. It's probably a 50/50 shot.

Janet. A binding is no big deal and there's nothing to screw up. But, if you like the mouse, then just use the mouse.
When I'm editing, I just tend to sit with keyboard in lap and mouse to my right (on a music stand). cntrl/Z is right there as well as others. And, as far as going to where you want to go (navigation) if you set it up right, it's a lot easier in the long run to manuever around. (maybe)
