i miss my manual
the thing i miss most with 8.5 was having a cool box for the display case, cd's that install "ready to record" and have the sn#. and mostly, the thing i miss most about sonar is a actual paperback manual. a PDF has the same information but there is no beating a manual i can touch and take with me and read or reference to anywhere. not having a box to look at or cd for a fresh install kinda has a dirty bootleg beta feel to it. does anyone know if their will be a X1 paperback manual like with 8.5 PE? anyone watched the X1 vids? are they worth $50

What you get in that box (IF you actually get a box) is a users guide. It's pretty small tbh. @vids: They are excellent. First, try this: http://forum.cakewalk.com/tm.aspx?m=2179736 Or you can pay the 17.99 and just get a month to view online. hopefully that help some, I don't think you are really missing much tbh. @scott's book: This is going to be the best option. It's a bit expensive but I'm sure it's going to be a great book!

nice.. I remember the good old days of upgrading for $99 and having the boxed set and manual included.. this "$99 upgrade" from sonar is turning into $170 fast, for the same items that 8.5 came with.. not ****ing at you my friend, just had to say that. heh thanks for getting back to me quickly.. will you have anything on advanced fx chains or vox tracks with fx bused and panned differently?

I wonder if people would be interested in a "group buy"? If there is enough interest, maybe we could get a printing company to print us a nice 2 sided version. If there is enough interest, maybe the costs would be low enough for people to purchase? I always buy Scott's books but having the official one is nice.... Joe

I think the Sonar5 User's Guide (~600pp) was the last one that tried to be anything more than a collection of a few tutorials and a summary of the new features.

Since SONAR 5 we've only has a manual that explains the new features and goes through the basic setup tutorials. The X1 box package is actually the best presented I've seen in a long time even though we're talking about a box about 5mm wider than a DVD and about 1.5 times the height. At 1800 pages the pdf is going to be bigger than 2 reams of paper (by the time you get air in between the 900 double sided pages) so you'll need it made into about 6 manuals if you get it printed and put into a binder. that's proabably more manageable that way as you can put connected material in one smaller volume.

Not sure yet because I haven't finished writing it. By the way... to everyone looking into printing out the Cakewalk manual... it's copyrighted, so I doubt you'll find a company that will do it unless you get some kind of permission from Cakewalk. Scott, there is speculation that something ought to happen to make narrow console view more usable. Would that delay your publication date? (I already have one on pre-order)

My 8.5 book from sonar was well written and very concise. The paper was thick and it is still taken with me from time to time and has survived two semesters of college classes. It's even still black! heh. Is there anyway I could lobby that the cover of the X1 manual look like the box? Even for those who dont like the new look, it will still be easy for the eye to reconize it as X1 and not something else in the pile of sonar related books on the shelf. At least have an outer jacket with the white and blue X1 producer logo on it.?. And what I meant in my earlier posts: Is it possible to include some of the more advanced but often used methods and/or techniques like recording vox to audio track1 and sending it to a verb bus, then have the verb bus panned in different ways like vox track to center with comp, eq, etc. and VoxVerb bus to tail off to the hard right while the chorus or delay tails off to the left or even automated? Something that we can use to compare and see how far off base we are when creating or expanding ideas with awesome fx strings. We can at least know if we are on the right track or if the same idea can be achieved with less steps or processes. My biggest problem is finding info on learning how to record, mix, master, use fx in 5.1 For example, have a standard vox track with a actual "leslie" effect, or delay that tapps every speaker on it's way around. In "mme mode" you have 1/2,3/4,5/6,7/8 main outs. Do you use just the 1/2 for L/R? Or is it better to use all the mains and use 1/2 for "center vox" and send the "tailoff fx" to 3/4, 5/6? Thanks for at least listening to our comments especially, when you're still writing the book. It means alot to be able to consult the author of the book. Plus, even if we have no influence at all... We still have the "cool factor" of saying yeah.. we mentioned including that to the author.. heh Thanks again, Mc

Hey Mc, Unfortunately, I have no say what goes on the cover or how the book is designed. I just write it. After that, the publisher owns it and can do whatever they want with it. Of course, they do ask my opinion about things, but they always have the final say. If you're really interested in some in-depth info on mixing, I would recommend the following book... * Mixing Audio by Roey Izhaki - http://digifreq.com/?IzhakiMixing Thanks, Scott -- Scott R. I know it may sound "old fashioned" but i always prefer having a full boxed version of key software. Install discs, full manual, etc.. Then I burn any updates, patches to a CD and add to that box for future use in case I get a new PC and need to do a full complete clean install. Just seems more organized and tidy than accumulating 12 partial downloads and patch fixes over time.
