bitflipper "the first school in the UK to provide all its pupils with iPads...". Provide, my ass. Should read "the first school in the UK to become an Apple reseller". I am reminded of the movie "Idiocracy", in which the manufacturer of a sports drink convinces everyone to water crops with their product instead of plain water. Because it "contains electrolytes!". The crops die and worldwide famine looms, until Owen Wilson saves the day by reviving the practice of using water. It was Luke Wilson. I would be interested whether your a Democrat or Repulican with that statement. Interesting thought.

Is getting the Wilson brothers mixed up a Democratic or Republican trait?

Sorry for the confusion. It was not naming the right Wilson brother but the first sentense in your post. I thought it would have been obvious I was refering to the first sentence. What would a Wilson brother have to do with that. lol! It would seem that you think it's a bad idea for the school in the UK to do this. Whether you are a Democrat or Republican could make that statement interesting. BTW- I thought that movie was a hoot and I get your point. It seems the academic world (for the most part) would rather go with the Apple products. The school system here issues Macbooks to the students to use at school. I don't like Apple computers but I don't see what the big deal is.

I was railing against commercialization in schools. For example, some schools have deals with Pepsi or Coke that exclude their competitors' vending machines. We've long had high school football teams displaying oversized corporate logos on their shoes. Plain old fruit has been replaced by branded fruit snack products. The Democrat in me hates corporate intrusion into schools. The Republican in me hates captive markets. The Independent in me is just a grumpy old man who likes to shout "I'm not gonna pay for that!".

Also, doesn't £600 strike you as less than a bargain for the school? That's damn near a thousand bucks. Check the price of an iPad in your Sunday paper.

Great response Bit. I feel the same way about that. It's funny though. My son's school won't do bake sales to raise money but they will sell baked goods from companies for those same baked goods but they are crap. I guess it boils down to what direction should the country/world go. Clearly the friedman philosophy of economics is not working. It never has and never will. It relies on a high poverty rate. The Keynesian philosophy is what built this country to what it is today (or at least 31 years ago today). The friedman philosophy is what makes people upset about iPads in the schools. I guess it's welcome to the new corperatist form of government. I don't see a problem with iPads in schools. I may continue this in the coffee house. I think it would be interesting to see people's viewpoints about this. BTW- What government position are you running for? lol! great answer.

Rain dmbaer bitflipper I'm curious...does anybody really care about iThis or iThat? Is anybody getting excited over the prospect of making music on their iPhone? IKM sure seems to have redirected much of their development effort into that direction. What do they know that I don't know? I don't own an iPad and hope I won't find it necessary to buy one in the future. That said, I was impressed with Omnisphere's new feature that uses the iPad as an optional adjunt. The word "optional" is very important here, by the way ... that means Spectrasonics did it right. Like the new capability but don't own an iPad? No problem because there's also an Omnisphere window you can do the same thing in, albiet with a mouse required. I can certainly see CW offering an app that turns an iPad in to a full-fledged control surface for Sonar. Now that might one day make me an iPad owner. But for the moment, iTunes is just *so* awful that I'd like to keep as much distance as possible from Apple. I never really got into iTunes on the PC. Taken out of context, it doesn't have any advantages and has many drawbacks. On the Mac side, it's a whole different story. It benefits greatly from the way everything syncs. itunes on a PC is very nasty. kind of like the Borg. My everday computer is a Macbook Pro. itunes sucks on the MAc also, just not as bad. mainly because it takes any and all control away from the user.

Same here, but I actually don't find anything to really complain about, so I guess it suits me. That being said, I don't have any other media player installed - it's all Apple, from my DAW to my browser, etc. On the PC, I prefer to customize everything, but on Mac, having everything preconfigured and all apps in synch and working together is exactly what I expected and wanted - I chose my wallpaper and that's as far as I want to go. But I can imagine that it isn't the same for every one, in which case, yes, things like iTunes might suck. :)

JonD IK Obi You do understand each one of our products are built on the SampleTank Engine right? After SampleTank 3 comes you'll get the updates to each one. Sure, I suspected it would be true "in theory", but without any news announcements whatsoever on these products, I could also imagine a scenario where everything but Sampletank disappears from the IKM workstation lineup. With the huge changes companies are making nowadays, one can't be sure of anything in business - especially about product lines. That leaves it up to the marketing departments to let us know what's coming. Seems odd to me that you folks would just assume we would know what's in the pipeline, based on last year's offerings... Still, thank you for the confirmation on the updates (It's more than I've seen or heard anywhere else). Nothing is disappearing. If anything we're going to blow you away with the stuff coming out the rest of the year and even bigger things next year!

Looks like Digitech and Alesis are jumping on the iPad bandwagon. Digitch has a guitar effects processor that seems to be iPad dependant to change settings and such (unless it has usb for that). It has a slot fot he iPad to fit but does not need it to work. Alesis has a in/out device that the iPad slides into as well. It's just an audio interface for the iPad. It seems it's not quite up to snuff yet though.

I like the synths very much but they're too much a pain to read. I have to use the zoom thing in Win7. Which is a pain since to use it you have to auto-hide the taskbar or Sonar will slip under the taskbar and make it even more of a pain. So please make things easier for us low vision customers.

bitflipper we're going to blow you away Don't think we won't hold you to that, Obi. PLEASE DO! :) Seriously I fully believe music on iOS to be the future. It may not be the end all be all but it is the future. The youth have taken to it so well that in 5 years when they are grown it'll be a lot more feature packed and how more power to run our apps! Not to mention the amazing things we have coming soon...Seriously. ;)

I think that the forcast in gadgetry is toward the ipad form factor. Not sure why exactly, less expensive production costs possibly? ease of use, portability? I still like my big DAW. I can change parts in it and re-configure it. I don't do a lot of portable anything ,so size really doesn't matter to me(in this case). I like having two 22" screens to work with and my big keyboard to type on. Why would I go get something with a 3" screen? I have an Iphone and I downloaded a few music apps/synths to play with and its cool but I don't see this as a tool to make serious music for me at least. My wife has an ipad and loves the thing. You can't beat them for email,FB and such. I can't see myself with one any time soon. Presonus has an app for the iPad to remote control their mixers, but I wonder how practical even that would be. I guess I'm still a skeptic. With respect to helping schools, I have never seen Apple do anything overtly benevolent unless it somehow either directly or indirectly pads their pockets, and this can be said of most any company.

Well for example, the new SampleTank for iOS and iRig MIDI change the whole "its just a toy" argument. The iRig MIDI is the only one out there with In/Out AND Thru and the only one that allows you to charge your device while using the 30 pin connector! With S ampleTank iOS you have the EXACT SAME SOUNDS found inside of Miroslav Philharmonik, SampleMoog, SampleTank 2.5 AND the upcoming SampleTank 3! Then you have the amazing touch screen factor. When you have iKlip Mini holding your iPhone plugged in to your favorite Midi controller and your playing you can have an X/Y controller, or 4 faders and you can switch up to 4 banks of sounds at once...there are so many possibilities having a full blown rompler in your pocket! You can have more in the iPhone in your pocket than most workstation keyboards out right now! With sounds that sound just as good if not BETTER than a lot of them out! This is, without a doubt revolutionary. In a few generations of iOS devices you will be able to run the full AmpliTube on your iPhone. The technology is headed that way anyways, we want to make it seemless to work on both iOS and on your desktop DAW. We want to make it so that when you work at home or in the studio on your DAW, you can walk away with the ability to continue creating and when you get home all your changes would be there! We want the same quality sound you would expect from IK Multimedia on your desktop on your iOS device.

Once upon a time I was hooked on all of the soft synths and had a laptop midi setup I took out with me to play.I had sonic synth loaded and played it via a usb to midi connection. No doubt the sounds were incredible but after awhile I started to ask myself........Why am I towing this thing around with me when I could have a decent keyboard loaded with what I need all in one easy to use box? The sounds on some software synths are second to none but for my purposes I just needed the basic bread and butter sounds, and the sounds on my Motif or Roland are pretty good actually. No doubt the ability to use an ipad simplifies using a remote midi module. For me though I guess it is the simplicity of bringing my board to the gig, plugging it in and playing. I have done all of the stuff you dread doing on stage like tripping on the usb cable, knocking the laptop off of the stand, having the computer pick up a terrible ground loop hum 5 minutes before I'm supposed to play..........There was a time I would have argued the benefits of using a controller and a laptop. I have been around a little since then though and for simplicity sake I prefer a dedicated self contained instrument if at all possible.......... Same with guitar. I prefer to have a self contained computerless setup when playing..these are my reasons and I'm sure someone else can argue the benefits of an ipad,we are all different right?and thats cool. I like the ability to set up quickly and not have another "thing" to deal with. What do you do if you have a gig to play and you loose your iphone? or it gets wet somehow and doesn't work? I have a suggestion FWIW.....IK and others like them would have a real market IMHO to license a card with their stuff on it to fit into say a Motif. I could have the card installed and ready to go with all of the cool sounds that you can get from Sonic Synth.Same with Line 6. It would be super cool to connect the usb and download a set of sounds from IK.If the manufacurers could add a SSHD to their stuff or some other way to accomidate the large samples it would be awesome. Some have done this but there hasn't been much cross pollination between companies. A deal like that would benefit both companies. In the studio its a whole different thing. I'm not knockin' you guys that use this stuff and I'm not knockin' IK either but for the giggers who do their own setup, simplicity is king. Not many of us have roadies to hook up and test all of our gear before we play. I have it made right now though, playing at a church I have an 88 key grand sitting there already set up and ready to go....the only drawback being it isn't a guitar ;)

The whole mess confuses me. I am still using a Blackberry Pearl. I want to upgrade my phone, I've already had to replace the trackball and have current one held in placewith scotch tape on the suround (used a razor to cut a hole for the trackball.... Now, it isn't that I love the Pearl and it isn't that I dont REALLY want a new phone but I am completely overwhelmed with the choices, not only of phones but carriers. I am with AT&T and I have no problem with them. I've been with them for well over 10 years and before that I tried Sprint (I think) and dropped calls everywhere. However, these days I wonder if I might do as well with Verison. The new i-phone looks cool but I have never gotten into Mp3 players, I like CDs, but I can adapt... I am just slow. The Android honeycomb looks cool and there is just something about Apple that I don't like but it is irrational, I have no reason to not like them. Then there are the tablets... there I am again overwhelmed. I imagine that the i-pad might be the way to go but IIRC it does not support Flash.. is that a problem. It has some really cool apps but then I read reviews that say, "this app would be great if it worked". The Tascam Portastudio is one: http://tascam.com/product/portastudio/ that appeals to me but the reviews are not stellar... but it sure looks cool. I don't want to go the wrong direction with a tablet. Wouldn't a Pro Channel controller app be cool. If you are reading this and have advice... I am all ears. I am 59 yrs old and I try really hard to keep up with the technoogy, if I get an i-phone or i-pad I will convert and load all my favorite CDsand songs to it and get a dock. I like the apps that would allow me to tune in to any radio station or show, there is a lot to like and I will be upgrading in the near future before our two BBs fall completely apart... but I want to make the right decision and all the advice I get seems totally subjective. Any thughts on whether I should go with i-phone and i-pad or honeycomb and some other tablet? I need help, I have been putting this off for way too long.... and if I decide on the i-phone should I wait for the 5? Arrrrgh, Julien

My iPhone failed once I think - while I was on the bus, on my way to a city where I knew no one but one person, who was supposed to pick me up when I'd call her to let her know I had arrived. Of course, her phone #, address and all the rest was in my iPhone and I couldn't remember it... But amps can fail on stage too, you know. I've seen it. Twice. In 25 years. ;)

Any thughts on whether I should go with i-phone and i-pad or honeycomb and some other tablet? I need help, I have been putting this off for way too long.... and if I decide on the i-phone should I wait for the 5? Arrrrgh, Julien With iRig MIDI you'llbe able to plug into your 88 key controller at church and take advantage of SampleTank iOS sounds live!
