idiots guide to the AKG C 3000B please

hello cool cats

the two adjustments on the side of this mic

one is a 0 or -10 dB switch, the other is a (lin) -- sliding upward line graphic

can someone mention when these two settings would be considered in a session?

ps- we did a clarinet ensemble today, four clarinets in a large room with two of these mics
what settings would you folks have had them on??

THANKS

Well the first one will decrease the mics output by 10db and the line one will probably roll off some low frequencies.

So if you are blasting trumpets into the mic maybe you can reduce it's gain by 10db so that things are more manageable volume wise. If you're recording the bass keys of a piano maybe you can engage the roll off so that things aren't so boomy.

This is just an idiot's guide...but don't worry I'm sure some expert will come along and offer a patronising explanation.

Its basically just a -10db pad for like Montezuma said, blasing your trumpet into the mic. But i would not jump real fast to use that pad. I would 1st lower your gain stages in the chain first to see if that help. If it doesnt and your over driving the Mic itself, then the pad is a great tool to use and you can make up the 10db's with the mic preamp.

those are both helpful, thanks guys
and yes CJ I have generally gone with the 'avoid the pad' technique even when using my MOTU, if possible
the recording is fanstastic as-is too, sometimes we have more buttons in this society than sense...
then again, some do serve a purpose

    ciao!

I have a C4000b, and it has the same settings. The one switch is a 100hz rolloff. It's nice on low vocal lines that tend to have a lot of bass and muddiness to them. I don't know about that mic compaired to mine, but mine can take a ton of spl without distorting. I doubt you can overdrive it, as I stick mine in an ISO box with a cranked guitar amp and don't have problems. I would probably leave the -10db switch off in 98% of what you do with it. I only use it in loud vocals, or high spl situations. It's nice that it lowers picked-up backround noise, but it lowers definition a ton also if the volume going into the mic isn't loud enough.

I'm stuck in the past, but my foot's tapping forward
