is my woofer toast?
I recently noticed my woofer in my Tannoy makes a slightly fuzzy/distorted sound when the volume is louder and bass is prominent. at low volumes it seems fine. It's only the one speaker, if it is damaged is this an expensive repair? maybe it's time to get new monitors as these are an old pair of Tannoy 6.5 pbm's I've had for 15 years.

I looked closer and found the foam edging is ripped so I will look into replacing that, I might as well do both since the other one will probably rip soon as well.. thanks for the Links stich ! I like my old Tannoys I find my mixes transfer well, so if the fix is inexpensive all the better!!

Be Careful! You must replace both surrounds in order for both speakers to sound the same. (in relevance to each other) Also, they will not sound as they did before this problem started. The surrounds you've have for 15 years are different than what will be put in. Looser surrounds = looser bass Tighter surrounds = tighter bass I just replaced the surrounds on a paid of my speakers, and ended up giving them to my sister because the bass now sucks. (too loose) If you do replace the surrounds try and ensure they are as close to what used to be in there as possible. (same material (foam/rubber) and the same play) hope that helps, Tomek.

find a local shop that can replace the foam with butyl rubber. Makes for a tighter bass sound and lasts much longer. I had my Boston Acoutcis re-done for half the price of replacement drivers, at Austin Speaker. Just be sure you have both of them done, because the other one will need it too

I'll agree w/ Zlartibartfast to a point. The other thing to consider as I've already mentioned, is the amount of "play" the surrond has. Materials used, are not the only property that will alter your sound. Tomek. Edit. my replacement surronds were of high quilty rubber, the problem is they have more play than the old ones, allowing the drivers to exert more. Speaker manufacture take material used into account when designing the speaker. I would suggested unless you want your sound to change, replace the surrounds w/ something that is as close to what you had as possible. Replace foam w/ same density foam and rubber w/ same density rubber. Ensure the amount the surround is capaple of moving is the same as the old ones too.

matsonicboom said the gospel. You get those "woofers" reconed by someone who is a pro and you'll have great studio monitors for the next 15 years. Hey and watch those humidity extremes that will do that + normal use everytime.................JDW

Hi matsonicboom, I too live in Vancouver.... Not sure if speak city will re-do the surrounds for you. They may not have the correct size or siply do not do that. (I know they build speaks, but new surrounds or re=cone not sure) The place that did mine is on broadway near main. (kinda accross the street from money mart) There is one dude who has been doing surrounds for vancouver for years. (takes practice) He simply visits each shop once per week to see if there is any work waiting for him. Don't know the name of the shop and its kinda tucked away, but if you're walking east on broadway (from main) it's the block after kingsgate mall. (same side of the street) Hope that helps, Tomek.

Hey Tomek, thanks for the info ! you wouldn't happen to have this guy's number would you?? I called speaker city and they quoted me $69 plus tax per speaker! (2-3 week waiting period or a $25 surcharge for a.s.a.p. service..yikes!) For all of you that love Vancouver you should see it with a dusting of snow right now...awesome! Hey johndale, your part of the world is pretty fine in my book!

Hi johndale, looks like me, u and marsonicboom all play axe :) No wonder we're all talking about blown speakers -hehe Actually mine got shot mixing records while out of it at a party one night, but that's another story ;) I love it here in Vancouver, moved here 7 years ago (from ottawa) and don't plan on leaving. It's very nice. Montreal is great too, but I can't speak french so Vancouver was the obvious choice. Montreal and Toronto definitely have a better music scene, but Van. is alrigh. Different kind of living. SF rocks too, one of my fave US cities too. What keeps you in Red Bluff? Not sure I'd been there on my way down the coast or not... Take it easy, Tomek.

Red Bluff is a little cowtown along I5 about 150 miles North of Sacramento, on the Sacramento River about 40 miles east of Mt. Lassen. My wife's fam has been here since the 1850s old gold rushing and cowboy fam. I am actually from Va. Beach, Va. Came out here in the early 80s the first time to work as a union surveyor, kind of went back and forth and all over for a number of years. I'm first generation on my fathers side N. Irish (Orangeman) so for a while I was also spending time with my cousins in Belfast and Porterdown (Co. Armaugh) and doing the Euro music thing. I am 48 always have played in bands, but I have a degree in Land Planning from ODU and I have been a licensed surveyor in the State of Ca. since 1989. When I survey I make real good money and have always kind of cruised off that and some inheritance. So between land development and music I have been a lot of places and lived many different places. I practically lived over in Sidney BC for 6 months, but could not officially because of the work thing, the people I worked for and I got along well, but you know the bull a US worker has to go thru to stay in Canada. I really love your country and the society. When I was still living in Va. Beach I went to Montreal and Toronto, your right all most a European music scene there. But I was just visiting. My wife has a grandchild here and another on the way here. Also we have a 19-year-old daughter who lives here that is our child together. The baby makers are step to me. Well that’s my story...........................JDW

Hi matconicboom, just realized you have a pair of tannoys. The best place to repair those in town is kinetic Sound Services. Not only are they Tannoy authorized, but they have great service and prices.. 25th and Fraser I believe their # is 604-875-8511. My friend bought a replacement driver for his Tannoy Reveal for about $100 last year. Super Cheep if you ask me! Which leads us to your new question... Cannot recommend anything that cheep. I just wondn't be happy with a powered monitor in that price range. (I'm assuming your price range is for both speakers in CND$$) The best low price powered monitor I am aware of is what I have... The Tannoy reveals. Mind you the only reason I got mine was becuase a friend needed some money and knew I was shoping for new monitors. So he gave me a deal I couldn't refuse for two Reveals w/ the powered sub. Personaly I was going to go for a pair of something more in the $2000 range, but this deal came up, so I got what I got. Grew to like the Reveals after a while...They are kinda smooth, tight and accurate. (I always have been a fan of big silk tweeters so Im sure that has something to do with it.) The Tannoy reveals are far from the best speaker, but no doubt the best in their price range. The low bass is close to non-existent, so if you want that you need to get a powered sub. (which could cause problems) but like I said, nothing better for the price. Also, the replacement parts are cheep, so you don't have to worry about them falling over and the driver spliting (which is why another friend had to buy a new driver for his) hmm.. looks like a lot of friends have Reveals. -hehe If you can't afford the reveals, I'd just get your existing ones fixed, and spend a few hundered bucks on a nice powerfull Rotel Amplifier, and some decent cables. Assuming you have something inferior for an amp, you should notice a good sound quality increase. Small speakers with big clean smooth amps sound awsome! Hope that helps, Tomek.

any suggestions in the $400-500 range?? KRK V4: excellent overall tonal balance and a little light in the bass department, but certainly better than you would expect from a 4-inch speaker. Excellent speaker for tracking. Event TR-6: Very wide stereo image, good bass response. The midrange is a bit forward, which is typical of Event speakers. It may prove to be fatiguing after longer listening sessions. KRK Rockit (RP) 5. Decent bass, though not as good as the Event TR-6 or the KRK ST6. Frequency response definitely has a dip in the midrange. KRK ST6: The bass response is good but slightly lumpy (they're trying to get too much bass from a 6-inch with cabinet tuning tricks) and the overall impression of the speaker is that it's a shade on the darker side. Unfortunately, this speaker was placed in a different location than the rest (on a desk), which probably affected the bottom in a negative way. The overall sound is pretty tight and you could listen to these for a long time without fatigue. M-Audio BX5: Midrange megaphone. I'd pass on these. I'd place the KRK ST8s (which sound radically different than the ST6s BTW) above all the speakers mentioned so far. from research Jonas did for me. Michael

Motu micro express, I'm in a jam with one had 2 bad experiences with the MOTU midi's. I have used midiman for years with no hiccups. I use the in/out on my MOTU 828MKII, but the other units seem to work or not for some people. Just last week I set a guy up who was having problems with his. If you don't have a lot of in/out's, then even the little midisport works great. That's all I use. Michael

I'm considering the 828MKII how do you find the pre amps? I'm kind of simple when it comes to some things-I like things that work. The MOTU works for me. How good are the pre-amps? Gosh Tomek. They work. I use a gold channel sometimes and I didn't hear night and day difference. I don't know of a soundcard out there nowadys with built in pre-amps that's better. Big help huh? I produce a lot and it doesn't let me down. I plug something into it-instant gratification. Recorded 6 tracks of drums the other day and bass through the digimax which I bought to tandem with it-instant gratification. Want a clip of a Taylor acoustice guitar and a full drum set with bass going through the MOTU? Give me an e-mail address. I'll be right on it. Michael

The reality is that when the surrounds on a woofer fail the rest of the driver takes a beating. The surround holds the speaker in place and keeps the rest of the workings centered...the truth of the matter is that your driver has suffered other types of damage due the fact that you have continued to use it with a failed surround. If you took it back to Tannoy they would insist on replacing the driver, not repairing it. I think you are best to think about the new monitors, and feel good that you got so many years of service out of the Tannoys. R

The reality is that when the surrounds on a woofer fail the rest of the driver takes a beating This is true in most cases, that is why when the surrounds get replaced, the entire assembly is carefully inspected to check for other damage. (might as well re-cone if required, while they are apart) I think you are best to think about the new monitors, and feel good that you got so many years of service out of the Tannoys. very true budget permitting AND if you don't love your old speakers -hehe
