Yes, run SONAR installer for the previous version, select the advanced install option, select the plug-ins to install.

No, if you follow scook's directions in #2 to do the advanced install and check only the plug-in(s) you want to install.

But what is not clear is can you just install the plug ins??
I don't think you can install them without installing the whole program, some are registered with that version and require full serial number and activation code for them to run.
I was told not to install an older version of Sonar afterwards. I was told you had to always install them oldest to newest or it would cause some sort of issue that was not a good thing.
Some sort of overwriting of an important part of the newer versions files. Sorry I can't elaborate and I have no clue where that thread would be found now. Hopefully someone else can be more precise.

I'll keep digging but here Sidroe is warning against it due to old plug ins will overwrite newer ones, So I think we need to look into this a bit more before the OP pulls the trigger.

And here's one where Scook warns of pending doom-

So I think this doesn't work because as I said, you won't get the plug ins with out installing the whole program. So I'm now in the habit of installing a bare bones version of 8.5 first. I doesn't take long when you uncheck most of the unwanted stuff.

I am at this crossroads too. Bought a new laptop yesterday and I have my 8.5 discs here and, so a couple of things I may take from them, Pantheon and V-Vocal, but I am interested in just installing X3 , but just the instruments I use. Some of the bundled stuff like Lounge Lizard Session, I have the full AAS Range and Ad 1 (well 2 now) I have expanded to Ad2 and have 7 kits. I Have their Keys too, so may not install True Pianos. I wouldn't like to have a fucus on the higher quality instruments.

There a quite a few analogues, but I may just install Ultra Analogue. I started with a bassstation and focusing on just one allowed me to really understand what I could do with it. I think maybe reducing my options will help my focus in the long run. But to have the option to add in later would be desirable.

Or should I just install just the plugs from 8.5 I think I may go back too. Pantheon, V-Vocal. What else would there be?

V-Vocal is a special case. It has been a while since I looked at the 8.5 installer but in the X series V-Vocal is not a separately installable plug-in, it is part of the SONAR selection at the top of the advanced install pick list. It means in order to get V-Vocal, a minimum install of SONAR along with the shared utilities will be installed. In this case, I would recommend performing the install before X3. Generally the installers are smart enough not to overwrite newer files but if there is nothing on the machine why test it.

The other missing plug-ins in X3 from 8.5 are the Beatscape, Pantheon, VC-64, Analyst and Tuner.

What is the worst that could happen when installing an older version after X3? Something gets broken on lost in X3, then perform a clean re-install of X3 (it is not that bad) the instructions are here http://www.cakewalk.com/S...n-Install-Instructions

Yes, they come in waves as pre-X Series users pickup a new version of SONAR on sale.

Cool, very helpful scook. I thought I was missing another that I meant to, the VC-64. I'll bring tuner and Analyst with it too. Not sure I am bothered about beatscape

8.5 is also on disc, so also makes a little sense to do this whilst my laptop has a DVD drive in it, instead of months down the road when it's been swapped out for an ssd.
