Try toggling offset mode.

Thanks for trying y'all! I tried to clone it. There is definitely something wrong with that track and cloning perpetuates the issue. Inserting an audio track and copying the WAV files got me to a point where the pan is working. Some processing between the X3 series of patches corrupted this track somehow. I brought it into X3 from an older SONAR project. Saved as a new X3 project and then started moving things around. The panning worked at one point and then went south. I thought it was a corrupted component of some sort. Toggling offset did nothing for me. I can move on now. :) Thanks again y'all!

Strange, it made a big difference for me. When I opened the project there were ~ marks by the volume and the pan. Typing "O" changed the display values of volume from -5.1 to -0.8 and the pan from 100%L to 46%R. Also after typing "O" moving the pan slider worked as expected.

Typing "O" did fix things; kind of. The track now pans, as the automation shows it should, however the pan "knob" does not move. It pans manually as well. HTH, T

My results are the same as the others. It pans right but wont pan left. After coping it to a new track it will pan both left and right.

All works normally for me without cloning anything once the Offset panning is removed. I was going to suggest that last night, but it didn't quite fit with the issue description, because even with an offset you can still pan - just not across the same range. And that's what I'm seeing with this project: Since the offset is 46% right, you can pan hard right and somewhat left of center, but you can't pan hard left. No fault found. EDIT: Automation, including track inspector and header widget movement is also working normally when read-enabled (with Volume automation raised from -Inf so you can hear it).

Could there be an offset set in offset mode? Try turning on offset mode and seeing if that's the case?

Hit the nail on the head. I can confirm the results above.

Like I said in my post there are lots of complexities to pan and offset mode is one of them :) You had a track pan set in offset mode. This acts like a second mixer on top of the normal track pan and envelopes. This is one of the first things to troubleshoot when you have a pan problem like that.

Thanks everyone, I appreciate your time and patience. I have no clue how that track got into offset mode. I would not intentionally do that but I have some pretty fat fingers.

offset mode is very handy believe it or not. the first thing I do when I receive a project I go through all the levels of all the tracks. Vocals: vocals sometimes have levels jumping all over the place. what I do is isolate sections of the song and automate levels of the track to be more consistent. IE- the verse is -6db / the chorus jumps to -1db this way my compressor is not working over time / breathing trying to fight a level -10db to + 10db. by doing early automation I can later go in to offset mode and then automate the whole track again and not have to worry about earlier automation moving again.

I did exactly this. Offset mode can be handy, but I want to be 100% sure I enter it deliberately, not by an accidental click of the O key. In the key bindings section of Preferences, you can assign the O key to "no action" (or something like that). This takes care of the problem.

I'm stuck all my tracks operate visually like they are panning but none of them do, they're all centered no matter where I set pan level. Oddly the meters show panning but not my ears!!
