We heard promises of an "activation algorithm" from prior owners and now that seems to be gone?

The promise of an "activation algorithm" was conditioned on the activation servers being shut down. That event has not happened. In fact, the activation process is of BandLab's purchase. Here is Noel's post about this part of the BandLab acquisition.

OMG! I bought Samplitude the day before!!

The bundle came with a very nice audio editor and spectral editor to add to your SONAR Utility menu for less than the cost of either product.

There's an abundance of anger fueled paranoia here over a simple consumer transaction. We bought a product from company 'A', who then sold said product to company 'B'. Company 'B' has said clearly that we can continue to use the version of the product we purchase a license to use without interruption. They have also said that in the fullness of time, when they release their version of the product, we as license holders may migrate to that version without cost. There's no logical reason for them to lie or be less than truthful about this, so I don't get all the winging.

As for the lifetimers, "lifetime" never meant your lifetime. I'm certain the small print in the agreement was full of legaleeze to cover exactly an event such as this.

The way BandLab have addressed this is slightly oblique, but I think nontheless clear. They haven't taken on the lifetime updates obligation, because they haven't bought the company. They've bought the code for Sonar and presumably some of the other products, and they've independently employed a couple of Cakewalk's developers. But they don't hold any of Cakewalk's obligations in terms of membership schemes and so on. We're all just going to have to let that go.*

* he said, in the full knowledge that it'll be a point of contention on the forums for literally years to come.

I understand nothing of jibberish....I bought a program, and rights to use the program under a licence agreement....I did not buy the company, or the company that bought the company!

In my agreement paid...I signed in on....a agreement to have a working copy of...Sonar...And, on PC or other....Of which...I do not have yet working solid.

I do not care who bought the code.....I bought a licence, and a updated licence and another, and even another...And one more for the life time fixes promised....Of which are not in the software per say....Yet are upon the OS..mostly causing!....And it hangs onto ...Perhaps some bugs in the code of sonar....I cannot say.

All I can say...is to sell out the code...is to sell the product issues with it...And the licences held there of the users.....And I..wish to be one....but , as it is, trust has been violated not only in home..but nations .....and finger pointing of spying  or tampering by....Unknows...laying blame on others perhaps, perhaps not...To Cause issues in the world...to make hate, spit and spite be ongoing of....Bull or cow dung flung....

Be mindful...it is not so easy to say...Thanks to MS ...For this mess, or the ones who are putting in bad code....just to frustrate while they move the shell around to keep paying for it be used....at what cost?...How many dead?..How many poisoned?...how many now shooting each other....walking around blinded by the bling bling?...and a new promise of.....Who knows what/Meng said he cannot say.....Not that he does not know!

But then we assume eh...I robot!...is not my master!...nor is the beast or dragon what feeds it!...I paid in full!....and I got the ride clear as crystal!...And I thank the one who paid for it, to show me the Truth.

Did you miss the post by Noel where he basically restated the promise, now as a BandlLab employee, that the existing users of SONAR that rely on the activation servers will continue to be able to use their license for SONAR and that should the process change that existing users will have a means of still using their license?

From the SONAR Lives thread:

Noel Borthwick [Cakewalk]
There is no "Gibson activation" site. Activation is handled both by the application and the Cakewalk webside back end.
BandLab have acquired all assets and that includes the website and back end. So nothing is going to happen to existing activation's during or after the transition to BandLab. If you choose the reinstall the software the same activation process with apply as before.
If we choose to change how this is done in the future of course we're going to make sure that existing customers are not affected so there is no need for needless worry.

You're entitled to your opinion of course. But legally speaking, you're out of luck.

Either BandLab will turn out to be generous towards previous Sonar users, or they won't. I think the early signs are positive. But as a matter of fact, BandLab have no obligations to lifetime membership.

It's worth noting that BandLab's core business model is based around free-to-use for their core features, so I think there's no real reason to worry about getting fleeced for money. The larger question is whether the direction this all goes in suits the way you want to work.

I'm happy to give them enough time for me to figure that out. Cloud-based collaboration tools are currently not at all relevant to how I make my living, but life comes at you pretty fast, and audio engineering and production changes all the time in all sorts of ways. I'm certainly happy that Sonar is no longer in the hands of a deluded rich guy who doesn't know it's not 1985 any more.

This is really good news. Nice to see that it will live on. Rock on.

Ditto,i'm also very intrigued to see which way the course will run.
Thank you
Robert
