• SONAR
  • midi cc generators that work in Sonar X

Leonard
Hi there. Inside Sonar X1 Pro I'd like to use a midi tool that generates/outputs midi cc data. It could be an lfo, stepper, whatever.

 Uses I have in mind:
1, be able to (finally..) tempo sync the lfo in my europa modified Roland Jupter 6
2, do interesting tempo sync things inside other instruments like say a TC Helicon VoiceLive Touch
3, animate pan positions, send levels, etc in Sonar X1 Pro thus turning Sonar, which is itself an actual instrument, into a livelier more fun to play with toy.
4, of course, digging into a tool like this I will discover many more things this tool can do which I have yet to imagine. That's a fun prospect.

A solid, well crafted, purpose built, midi tool would be perfect. I'm hesitant to install Cableguys' MidiShaper (it requires a registry hack?) For Reaktor there is a user made LFO-to-CC-adv-1.2d it works in Sonar but it's usefulness is very limited. Does Insert-Piz-Here tools work for you guys? Thru KVR I just now discovered http://codefn42.wordpress.com/    These tools look promising. Then there is SugarBytes Thesys http://www.sugar-bytes.de/content/products/Thesys/index.php?lang=en

So..  Please share your insights. I very much appreciate this! Leonard

also, I understand it's kinda tricky to get 3rd party midi tools fully functional in Sonar X; at least this is so compared to other daws. This is the impression I get from what I've read. Is this assumption correct?

I am pretty sure I have seen a video that shows how to do at least some of this in Sonar without using any third party plugs. I think you can generate sine waves and the like as automation in Sonar.

The registry edit in the Midishaper instructions was necessary prior to X3. It is no longer necessary. Add the plug-in to the FX bin of an audio or instrument track and "Enable MIDI Output". Try the demo.

Some of the IPH plug-ins work.

Prior to X3 the setting up plug-in which generated MIDI could be tricky and there were some pretty bad bugs. X3 handles these plug-ins much better.

Scook, too funny! We were exactly at the same page at the same time doing the same thing. I was just gonna link here to that very spot! And here it you've just done it. Hah! Anyway, thanks. It's not quite the same as twisting a knob on my midi controller but cool none-the-less!
hmm.. that's $200 (upgrade to X3 pro) to achieve more solid 3rd party midi integration. Of course, there is everything else that comes with that upgrade.

Adding to the Draw Tool tips:

If you output the Draw Tool automation to another MIDI track (through a virtual MIDI cable), it will be converted to a MIDI CC message.  From there, it's a snap to create a library of modulation effects (virtual LFOs).  Extensible 'Groove Clips' of vibratos, tremolo, pans, sweeps, S&H ... varying rates, depths, fade-ins/outs, combinations of waveforms.  A drag 'n' drop collection of control clips that works across any synth, effect, or most track control.

Glyn Barnes- Thanks. I'd like to see that video.

Failed to notice you are on X1. The upgrade may be on sale, if interested and not receiving marketing emails, call Cakewalk sales to see if there is a better price.

The registry hack is not that bad for Midishaper, I am the one who told Cableguys how to get the plug-in working in SONAR. It should work OK as long as only one instance is running. Trouble starts in older versions of SONAR when more than one plug-in generates MIDI events.

scook- I'd rather do the hack than buy the upgrade. Thank you; I'm a bit more emboldened to take on that hack now.

aside: Curiously, Cakewalk's upgrade pricing encourages one to sit on the sidelines, wait for a few generations to pass before upgrading. This ol' Sonar X1 Pro I've got is a fully-fleshed healthy product here and now at mid-2014. It wants for nothing -especially when you consider my Sonar X1 Pro is heavily supplimented with high quality 3rd party software (not including that which is included within Sonar X1 Pro). So important is this: "Everything!" works fine now, there are no issues. Now, if the upgrade were $150 or less or if the upgrade pricing structure were different.. Well then maybe I'd be induced to jump.

back to topic..

Here are the original steps I gave Cableguys. It was about a year ago so I was using X2 at the time but the instructions would be the same for X1

Using the 1.2.1 demo:
Put plug-in is VST scan path
perform VST scan
check "Configure as synth" in midishaper VST properties
Edit registry, locate Midishaper.dll (and/or MidiShaper-64.dll) in VST inventory and set generateEvents to 1 (this is the tricky bit)
Add audio track and drop Midishaper into the FX bin
Enable MIDI out on Midishaper in the synth rack
Add synth to project, set input to Omni and record. Both the midishaper and keyboard input will be recorded at that time.

Personally, I use CAL for that kind of stuff, even today.  I have a CAL script that generates a CC sin pattern to suit my needs, for use as an envelope or an editable LFO.  I have another script that will produce an exponential curve that produces a nifty effect when passed to synths.

Some of SONAR's newer automation draw tools negate the need for this, as demonstrated in this post:
http://blog.cakewalk.com/sonar-quick-tip-draw-plug-in-automation-with-sonar-x2s-pattern-tools/

Still I like the control of CAL.

I'd upload these CAL scripts, but you're not allowed to upload attachments in the forum...   If interested, let me know & I'll find a way to get 'em to you.

Yours truly,

I uploaded the SIN wave CAL program & some screen shots over here:
http://www.vguitarforums.com/smf/index.php?topic=11665.msg84651#msg84651

It's native CAL, math only, & should run on any version of SONAR/Cakewalk.
