Hahaha!

You've nailed it Jlien

You want drag and drop to work?
Stop running Sonar as administrator (at least in X3D).
Clearly some weirdo permissions thing going on here.
Is it a bug.... hmmmm?

Nice one...
Yet another reason to move your plugin folders away from Program Files ( a stupid default that needs to change).

The ability of this forum to quantify behaviors never ceases to amaze me.

I do wish one could drag samples into programs like SD3 from explorer

One can. Just open the mixer view, and drop the file on one of the kit piece pads/graphics.

Weird... I will have to figure out why that does not work for me

I've tested dragging audio files (wav, mp3 and aiff) from both the desktop and a folder into X3d Track View just now and.....it works fine whether I run Sonar as administrator or not. It wasn't like this when I tried it this summer when I was on X2a. Sonar didn't accept audio files dragged from outside when it was run as administrator. The reason why I tried it is because there was a poster who mentioned the issue, in this post:
http://forum.cakewalk.com/Run-as-administrator-m2868836.aspx#2868897

So I've run X2a as administrator now to test it again. And, strangely, it works fine as well (although the window refused to resize for some reason so I couldn't try dragging a file from the desktop).
I re-installed my OS (Win 7 64-bit) a few months ago so maybe that fixed the issue for me. Sorry Alex...

Just tested. Not running Sonar X3d as an administrator worked for me. Thanks, Jlien X and CakeAlexS for narrowing this down for me. Cheers!

Confirmed by Cakewalk.

Won't not running as admin cause other issues for those plugs that require it?

If you move your VST's away from the Program Files folder then no. My view is VST's should not be installed in that path in the first place and Cake should change the default. Oh and yes the Pentagon soft synth won't run but that's a bug with the soft synth. Cakewalk shouldn't need admin permissions anyway.
