  • Has X3(a) fixed/improved these?

Hi, could someone here check if any of the following issues/inconveniences have been addressed in X3(a)? I'm thinking of upgrading from X2 Essential to the base version of X3, but if none of these have been fixed/improved I'll probably wait till the year-end sale. :)

#1
Open the Inline Piano Roll View and turn off Smart Grid and enable the "3" button in the Snap Module. The grid lines don't change (although note events snap correctly).

#2
Open the regular PRV and select "Pick Tracks" from the Tracks drop-down menu. You see not only MIDI tracks but also audio tracks in the list.

#3
Right-click on a MIDI clip and select Clip Lock > Lock Position. Although it's the position that is locked (not the contents), you can't nudge the note events in the clip or run any CAL (both options are grayed out in the menu).

#4
Try saving the full screen mode (F11) in a screenset. Someone said it used to work in the original X2. Does it work now in X3a? Or is there a new option to automatically put Sonar into full screen mode on startup?

#5 [for X3 base version users only]
Try cloning a MIDI track by entering any number (1 or higher) in the Repetition field of the Clone Track(s) dialog box. Press Enter and do you get an error message saying, "Please enter a value from 0 through 0"?

#6 [for those who experienced this in X2a]
Load a soft synth from the Browser. The synth freezes for about 4 seconds (if you click the task bar the freeze stops immediately).

#7
Record both note events and controller data (pitch bend, modulation, etc.) in the same track. Open the Event List and change the MIDI channel number of some of the data in the clip to different numbers. Now, select the MIDI clip and enter a specific channel number in the Channel field of Event Inspector in the Control Bar. Does the change only affect note events and not controller data? Do you still have to use the Find/Change command to change the MIDI channel of both note events and controller events?

#8
Load three soft synths from the Browser with the Simple Instrument Track box checked. Record something on the three tracks. Turn on the Solo button on two of the three tracks and group them (like the image below). Start playback and you hear nothing. Right-click each track and select "Split Instrument Track" from the menu. You see why you don't hear anything (only the audio tracks have been grouped and soloed).

#9
Send bank select messages (MSB, LSB) from your MIDI keyboard to a soft synth loaded in Sonar. TTS-1 and Z3TA+ (v1) both receive the messages and change their banks all right, but not Z3TA+2 and other VSTi's I tested, such as Korg Legacy Collection and Synth 1. When they're used outside of Sonar (as a standalone or in Studio One 2 or DP8), they all work fine.

#10
Is there now an option to hide the MIDI Editor indicator in the upper right corner of the MIDI clip?

#11
Is there now an option to lock all other tracks in the regular PRV so that you can edit only the current track with note events of other tracks locked and displayed in the background?

Thanks!

#2 - this is the way I like it and it would be a pain (for me!) if it was restricted solely to Midi tracks

Why would you need audio tracks listed in the PRV track picker? Genuinely curious!

To retain control over mute/solo switching in a drum map without having to go back to Track View.

This might not be an issue in X3 as I've heard that solo/mute behaviour is now as it should be, but up until now this has always been a major PITA when editing drums (or anything else using a Drum Map)

I usually don't do laundry lists, but...

1. No, you must toggle global snap on an off after changing resolution for the PRV grid to follow.

2. MIDI Picker still shows Audio tracks.

3. Works as designed, I think. Locking MIDI clip position includes locking position of all events in the clip.

4. Don't know offhand, and too lazy to test.

5. Maybe an Essential-specific issue. Never seen this in Producer that I recall.

7. No, Event Inspector does not change channel of Controllers, but Find/Change is almost as easy. Or you can just use forced MIDI output channel on the track unless you really need to mix channels in a single clip/track.

8. Yes, there is still an issue with grouping solo buttons on Simple Instrument tracks; this is the only one in the list I personally care much about, and I just split them is needed.

9. I could be wrong but I think this is mostly a limitation of synths that need time to load samples when changing "patches". It's not just a matter of quickly loading up patch programming parameters in a true "synthesizer" or switching samples that are already in RAM as with a basic synth like TTS-1. It's not supported with samplers because of the playback glitches that would result from on-the-fly loading of large sample sets.

10. I don't think so.

11. If you mean lock all other tracks with a single click, no; tracks must be locked individually.

Thanks for your reply. I've only read the first answer but as I said its Inline PRV and I tried toggling global snap on and off and it didn't work.

Yes, #5 is an Essential-specific issue, as I said.

As for #6

But as I said, the banks change when used as a standalone or in other daws.

This current status of this ticket is "Submitted to Development" so I guess this is a bug.

#5 and #6 are definitely fixed.
Re #9 you have to turn on "Translate bank and program changes" in the plugin properties from plugin manager.

#8 is a good bug. I don't recall coming across this one.
Was it ever logged -  if so do you have a CWBRN number for it?
