What's the best tool to get rid of rockbound hiss?
I was sent some files for voice overs (the person with the voice has gone overseas and not able to redo them) and there is some hiss in the background that needs to be removed. I've tried compression and a gate but it's still audible to me.

Is this a constant hiss (background noise)? If so, you may want to look into noise reduction tools available. For most, you need a section of a certain sample size to capture as the "noise print" and then can remove that print from the entire track. Some free options are Audacity and ReaFIR, there are also SoundForge, Audition, and RX3 (the not-free stuff).

Depending on exactly what the background noise consists of, EQ/gates can be hit or miss with effectiveness. As long as a noise is consistent (not transients), most noise reduction tools can do a decent job on them.

Waves Z noise is a good tool.

it's consistent hiss still playing around with eq, but it's probably time to get supm made for this purpose.

SoundSoap works well too, although meant mostly for vinyl crackle, hiss and pop.

R-mix can do quite well if you have it from a previous version of Sonar. It came with X1 and, I think, X2.

Hi dahjah,

I was looking for something like this recently after I moved from an old system (that had the excellent Sound Forge Noise Reduction plugin) to a new one that didn't.

Halfway down the attached thread, there is a suggestion from musicroom that I should try a free plug-in called reaFir.
http://forum.cakewalk.com/Upgrading-from-SONAR-3-to-X3-a-Sound-Forgey-question-m2977472.aspx

I've installed it and it does the job perfectly.
I can simply sample an isolated bit of hiss and then select to have it removed from the remainder of the clip.

Some instructions are here:
http://reaperblog.net/2012/05/video-removing-noise-with-reafir/

It works slightly differently as an in-line plug-in but it wasn't difficult to work out once I'd got going...

Good luck if you try it,

For the record, I've submitted a request to Cakewalk that this plug-in (or something similar) is an in-built or a bundled tool for future releases of SONAR (you never know).
