I'm running an RME UCX with Producer 8.5.3. Trying to get some routing going, but either I don't understand how this works or something is wrong.

I'm using all four outputs in Sonar, routing drums to 1/2, bass to 3/4, rhythm to 5/6, solo to 7/8. All work as expected. In Totalmix I can see all four channels in the Software Playback window, meters are bouncing, I can adjust levels, works as expected.
At this point I should be able to route the Software Playback channels to any one of the four hardware outputs. But I'll be dammed if I can get this going. I've got all eight UCX hardware outputs going to a summing box with a cable snake I built yesterday. I've got the latest UCX firmware and totalmix drivers.

In my mind I should be able to assign Software Playback channel AN 1/2 to hardware output 1/2 and so on down the line. But it won't work.

So, anyone use a UCX this way? I've been to RME's website, the thing is so slow it's useless. Can't find any solutions there. And I've read the manual.

TIA,
DaveT

What are you trying to acheive?

I never did understand the purpose of these sound card mixers. They are kind of redundant I think.

I got my answer over on the Gearslutz forum and from RME. Not the answer I wanted mind you, but now I get it.
FWIW, Total Mix is a total mind f**k, but the hardware works great.

I can route separate outputs to my mixer via Sonar.
It's all digital.
I use adat so maybe that has something to do with it.

Dave, are all your connections analog? Just curious.
Yea, the few times I've looked at Total Mix I could never make much sense of it.

Dave, I have a UCX and totally love it.

I'll say that it has taken me a long time to wrap my head around all the great ways to use it.

Take the time to read through the help file. Understanding Mix Snapshots will make it easier for you to mix in a live setting using Total Mix.

For your question above, it's key to understand the difference between Submix Routing mode and Free Routing Mode. Stick with Submix until you get your feet under you. After a year, I've not reached a time when I really needed free mode - though it's good to understand.

Knowing tricks like cntrl+clicking the wrench to open all setup properties to the right of the wrench you click (or EQ or Dynamics) is really useful when you're doing a soundcheck.

DON'T FORGET DIGICHECK. DigiCheck is the most awesome tool of RME. I use an instance for every track or bus when I mix to measure loudness and levels. Bit static and Noise... you name it. And that isn't even mentioning what Global Record can do for you!

Keep in mind that if you are willing to bounce real time you can use Loop Back and apply FX to each individual channel (EQ and Compression if you want where EQs come BEFORE compression. If you want EQ AFTER the compression, you will have to route into another track as a BUS and apply the extra EQ. Keep in mind that you have all of the ADAT channels for buses too.

Total Reset can be a god-send when you can't figure out what you're doing and you need it fixed in a hurry. If you are having a problem, start with total reset.

By the way, I took the time to write quite a bit about the RME Total Mix on this thread...

The amount of information in the DigiCheck and TotalMix help files is daunting. I suggest reading them to learn what you can absorb and then returning to them again later. When you're recording a gig, once the band is dialed in and you're able to relax with a drink, bring up the help file.

And don't forget that you can use multiple instances of digicheck at the gig. You can monitor levels over time of every track you are recording and adjust you mix levels using that information. I had a great compliment in November when a pro sound man was asked by the band how to make it sound better and he said don't change a thing. :-)

I was using the compressors and eqs and some reverb and delay. It all came together beautifully. What an amazing toy!
