I'm sure there's a better way to comp with the new take lanes, but I'm still kinda "old school"...my method is going through the different takes, splitting and muting, and manually drawing in the appropriate crossfades.  When I try the same approach in X3 with take lanes, I've noticed that previous clips I've used to build my comp up to that point in the song were muted, and I've had to go back and guess which ones were the "keepers".

Until I learn/get the hang of the new comping system, is there a way to turn off the "mute other tracks when you split it" feature?  I've read a little online but still can't figure it out.  Maybe it's because I always use the smart tool?

I know...I know...change is hard.  I'll eventually figure out the new speed comping procedure...and probably never look back to the way I'm doing it now.

Anyone else know what I be talkin' about???  ;)

Patch X3D is out next week, this may or may not bring about a change in behaviour...

Thank you Alex.  Is the short and dirty fix (to make take lanes act more like layers) to switch from comping record mode to sound on sound?  The random "old clips being muted" is the more difficult workaround for me...

Just turn off the comping feature, it then reverts back to the old way.

+1k
totally agree, I don't like the new "click on a lowerpart of a midi/audio clip mutes the other take lanes" and it seems to be default feature when working with take lanes

I would love to be able to disable this feature, Im doing more harm than good, accidentaly clicking on lower part and messing up my "good" takes and loosing which take lanes I had on before...   :(

not true, there is no way to turn it off, its a default behaviour

if you mean "turn it off" by pressing down on (Record) button and changing "record - comping" to "record - sound on sound" that does not change the behaviour of take lanes "click lower part on midi/audio clip to mute the others in take lanes"

Hi Caminatic,

To disable muting previous takes, right click on the record button in the control bar and in the record preferences, enable Sound on Sound, the mode used in X2 and before.

The comping tool will still be present and will isolate takes (mute all but selection in the take lanes) as you swipe. In many cases (similar performances like multiple vocal takes) you may want that. Tools that may help you: Shift + spacebar will audition a selected clip. Using the arrow keys you can audition muted take segments to pick the one you like. CTRL + Click extends isolated clips, essentially turning them on in any vertical position.

If you're putting together dis-similar performances (i.e. a bunch of different guitar solo takes) you can still split the material out and move it around just as before. Alt + L click gives you the split tool allowing clips to be moved around independently. The fade tool works independently when isolate mute was not used and clips have been moved around. In this case I would recommend creating a new empty lane to compile the clips in any way you see fit and mute the "scraps" when you've got it sounding the way you like.

Hope this helps!

I realize that this is supposed to make comping vocals easier, but can't there be a way to make it so that we can just split and mute and move things around without having to navigate past features of comping mode which are unnecessary at times?  Why force the user to work around a feature, rather than have simple functional behavior as a base which then can be modified to enable specific tasks such as comping?

Also what about using the Edit Filter to permit the user to look at clips as layers again?  That would be a swell solution.

Thank you Dan.  So...are you saying that by switching record mode to Sound on Sound, X3 WON'T mute previous takes WHILE I'M SPLITTING?  That seems to be my biggest hurdle.  I'll have comped a 15 take vocal up to about the 2:45 mark, then look back and see things muted and have no idea which ones were the keepers.  Lucky for me, I usually draw in my own fades, so, sometimes that's a dead giveaway...

Is it because I'm splitting a certain way?  My technique for comping is a lot of right clicking and hitting the "K" button to mute clips.  I know, I know...I'll learn the new way soon.  Just wish I didn't have to..  =(
