• SONAR
  • Kontakt 5 and Sonar X2 / X3 [SOLVED]

Hi!

I just copied 3 projects I'm working on from the main DAW to the 2nd one that I just upgraded to X3. The intention was to use X3 for its new comping & melodyne integration & nudging fixes to speed up vocal editing and then bounce & bring vocals back to the main DAW that I'll update when the work is finished.

Interestingly, the biggest project loaded in X3 without a problem but the other 2 got stuck right after I initiate loading. I was to blame X3 for that but than tried in X2a to see the same. Shift + open shows me that it's Kontakt 5 that is the bad boy. Not loading K5 opens the projects, but unfortunately now I'm lacking the drums which are using samples from K5 ARD and hence got no reference when working on timing ...

Anybody any clue why identical installations of K5 can work with Sonar on one machine and not on another? Anything I can try to get it to load ... I know I could freeze all K5 tracks but I'd rather find the root of the problem ...

Are you using only factory samples or did you perhaps reference some unavailable samples? Did you install both VST 2 and 3 versions on both machines? Any 32/64-bit discrepancies? Just throwing out some ideas.

Same installations and same samples used. It's all still VST2 64 bit.

BTW, is there a way in K5 to save settings to a file (e.g. instruments used + K5 FX + routing + ...) which I could use to rebuild the instruments and settings I had applied?

You could
1. save the entire Kontakt channel strip (or set of channel strips) as a track template by selecting those tracks and choosing export from the file menu, or
2. Save only Kontakt's patch settings with all sounds/maps/internal fx/etc by choosing save as... somewhere in the plugin window (usually at the top)

It looks like you may be suffering this issue (Kontakt / Octacapture).

There is a workaround in the thread :-)

Thanks for trying to help, but that's not the case here ...
It happens with WDM driver as well as ASIO. I don't think it has got anything to do with the audio driver at all.
It looks more like it can't restore some K5 settings which are saved with the Sonar project ...

I just updated K5 Player to the latest available (5.2.1) - no change, though

For the record, Sonar does not crash: When opened in safe mode (shift+open) it loads the 1st soft synth (true piano), then prompts for K5. If I click "yes" you can see in the Task Manager that it loads anthoer 100 MB into RAM quickly (K5 application?) and then slows dow to load about 10 more KB every 10 sec and eventually stops ...

while typing the last post i let the "hanging" sonar project sit there ... and surprise ... after what must have been 10+ minutes where it looked like it had crashed, it returned saying that K5 cannot find more than 1100+ samples (ok, samples reside on a different SSD on the 2nd DAW but inside the K5 lib it is using identical stuctures ... and the 1st Project oculd located everything ok)

anyway, now I could browse for the correct location and after a save the project again opens quickly ...

well, it's very interesting that it takes sooooooo long on an all SSD drives DAW for K5 to figure out some files are missing ... of course, any sort of progress bar or other indication that everything is "OK" but just takes forever is pure luxury ...

anyway, learned something here

ready to do the comping in X3 now

Well I read this and panicked, because just before installing X3 I was working on a complex project (a music video cover of the Alice Cooper song "Poison") in X2 with three instances of Kontakt 5 - Synth Drums, Damage, and the Scarbee Ric bass (which is exceptionally tasty, but I digress). I may need to re-visit it for a remix so I loaded it into X3, but there were zero problems.

I then dug up another, older project done in X2 that also had three instances of Kontakt, and that loaded fine as well.

I suspect there's some file being referenced that's getting lost...my gut tells me it's probably not an X2/X3 problem, but more likely a one-computer-to-the-other problem. Good luck!
