Lets hold a revival service How about we use KCS Level 2 software by Dr T for the Amiga and Atari ST  link it to Sonar so we can use our vst's. with hubi's loopback   That was an interesting program.  None of the terms in the program were musical so it made it difficult to develop your imagination.   Seriously in some ways I think that was a more creative time.  Today we  have fewer programs to choose from than back in the Amiga Atari days.   The idea of all art being judged by a monetary idea is really stifling software criteria.  The Amiga for example had 25 brands of word-processor software.  Just my thoughts.  The softwares' today are different.  For example I would call PG'a music Biab "visiting artist because it is like having artist's attend your session.  But it is weak with giving you VST.  Alsoo Realband has a hard time if you want to duplicate a VST and use it in your projects.  Cakewalk Sonar is a journy to visit several studio's and is like buying a music store full of wonderfilled objects.  Reaper in contrast is like buying a music studio to record.  Although they have included Buzz Machines, they are nowhere near the quality of Cakewalk's software.   Prosonous Doesna't offer VST availability with their bottom tier so that program is worthless.   Cubase is expensive and doesn't come with as many synthesizers as Sonar did.
Reason has become a nice alternative with a built in studio.  Synapse Orion is another Reason like synthesizer that had VST years earlier than Reason did.  The rest of the software choices are Mac only which I don't own.

Wouldn't it be nice to set up a thread where people who have actually migrated to another DAW relate their experiences? Comparison charts only go so far... Things like workflow cannot be caught in comparison charts. I am in the process of migrating to Cubase and I know it's going to take a while, as many things are very different. Logical in their own way, but taking time to get used to.
Let's say a seperate thread for each DAW.

I started on a Fostex 4tk (also Teac/Tascam 8tk) reel-to-reel, then worked with in the Pro environments 2" 30ips Ampex machines. After years I when to Pro Tools native for PC, then Pro Tools HD Mac all the way. I finally found Cakewalk 8.0 and back to PC's which was My preference then all the way to Platinum. I'm really sorry that it's turned out this way that a great IP is Not being Developed & Supported anymore, possibly the IP will be sold off and one day a new platform will come, many in the industry believe "not as Cakewalk" the subscription model has moved everywhere as steady/dependable cash flow.

After trying out Cubase, FL Studio, Reaper, Logic, Mixbus which all have their place (positive/Negative) I'm just loving PreSonus Studio One 3 Pro. after working with it there is so many possibilities. The work flow has been easy, all my 3rd party VST's scanned right in, S1 has a lot of plug-ins of their own but I still love my FabFilter, Nugen, Waves etc.
I'm sure a few have seen this: https://www.slant.co/versus/6432/6433/~sonar_vs_studio-one all I can say For myself working long hours with S1 has been "Rock Solid" now things have become "Second Nature" as my Sonar once was.

I agree, I'm now looking at it like Gibson did me a favor! I would have never gone to S1 had it not been for this and S1 is better, more intuitive, and easier to work with for my workflow. I'm a happy camper!

“Yes” I really liked Sonar, just seem to get a More pleasing experience with Studio One 3 Pro. I’ve been using it for over a week, very long hours never a problem. I did try the S1 Pro Version “Demo” about six months ago and I liked it, but thought I was so into Cakewalk, investment wise “it must be better? ”Even with Sonar’s Bugs & Crashes” Only to be here today. I’m happy with the switch!

Yes, that looks like the article I remember. Is that the same article that Craig quoted from?

No, the magazine is from 1989 - long before Sonar, Acid, Ableton, etc., and even Windows.  Craig said the article he copied above is from 2009.

I tried to start this ball rolling a couple days ago.  Check out Sonar Alternatives: Cubase.

Unfortunately, the forum admins moved the thread to Software, so the momentum got slowed a little.  I hope someone will launch a Sonar Alternatives: Studio One thread, Sonar Alternatives: Pro Tools, etc., and get a theme going.

I like how some have concluded their move to another DAW as an "upgrade" vs. "downgrade."  Maybe we could do a Google Form with a poll that generalizes these opinions on a couple of key factors/workflows:  Composing, Performing/Live, MIDI, Audio Recording, Audio Mixing, Audio Mastering, UI, Documentation, Support, Forums, etc.  Give me any other recommendations and I'll happily throw it together and post the link.

Oh, and please help me out by flushing out Craig's list of DAWs you'd like included.  I wouldn't want to forget anyone.

There is an official welcome thread to SONAR users that explains some of the differences. PreSonus did a comprehensive chart comparing the Sonar and Studio One feature sets so you can see which features one has the other doesn't (e.g, SOP doesn't have Mix Recall, Sonar doesn't have a High DPI UI). You'll find that Sonar's unique features remain unique. However a chart doesn't show stability, workflow, included content, etc. so there are still other factors to consider.

Here's the thread.

Cubase - No ARA support

Reaper - No ARA support.

Reason - Not heard much good about this one. But they did recently add ARA.

Protools - Expensive and I just don't hear much good about it.

Studio One - Has ARA, supports vst3, and has a similar workflow to Sonar.

ARA support is now coming to REAPER, and is being discussed in the "Software" forum here, as well as on the REAPER forum.
