  • *** Problem w/ copying and pasting automation ***

Currently having an issue w/ copy and paste on an automation envelope for a synth.  Have some automation going on during the hook of a song and I'm trying to copy and paste the automation to the rest of the hooks on the song so that they're all the same.

For some reason everytime I try to paste, it is pasting the automation to an "orphaned" envelope that doesn't exist.  No matter what I do it keeps doing this and I can't figure out why.  Never ran into this issue before.  Really don't want to redo all that automation for every hook on the song as that would be a bit tedious and time consuming.  Plus I just want to solve the problem for future reference.

Anyone seen this before and/or know a possible solution?

If it's a Simple Instrument track, try splitting it.

Thanks, but it's not a simple instrument track.

So what exactly do you mean by orphaned, non-existent envelope? What does that look like? Sort of sounds like a simple failure to copy or paste because automation is not checked in either the copy or paste (Advanced) dialogs.

Basically, when I copy the section I want to duplicate, instead of it pasting onto the same envelope, it pastes onto a new or "orphaned" envelope that isn't assigned to any parameter and when you hover the mouse over any section of that envelope it reads "orphaned".

I've went through and made sure all other envelopes were deleted and it still keeps doing the same thing.

And automation is definitely checked in all dialog boxes.  I've even checked the advanced paste settings to be sure.

So it's a track envelope automating a VSTi parameter? Is it on the MIDI track or the Audio track? What's it automating? Can you right-click the orphaned envelope and re-assign it to the desired parameter? Can you reproduce the problem in another project, or is it just this one?

Yes.  I inserted a synth (SubBoomBass) with all synth outputs checked which creates the folder track with the audio and midi track for the synth.  Played a bassline and automated the "Free LFO Dest" parameter on some parts.  It is on the audio track as that is the only place where the synth automation options are available.  Tried to copy and paste the automation to the other hooks in the song but it won't paste onto the selected envelope.  When I paste, it creates a new envelope that isn't assigned to anything (orphaned) and pastes the nodes there.

It will NOT allow me to assign the envelope to any of the parameters of the synth.  When I got to "assign envelope" on the orphaned envelope, the only options available are automated mute, pan, volume, and parameters for the Pro-Channel.

Tried opening a brand new project and this behavior continued.  Even tried out on different synths to make sure it wasn't something w/ that particular synth and still the same thing.  However, it only seems to happen when trying to copy/paste automation w/ synth parameters.  All seems to be correct when copying and pasting automation for basic track functions like pan, volume, etc. that are not directly from the synth.

I'm thinking this may actually be a bug as I've never seen this prior to using Producer Expanded w/ the latest QuickFix.  I hope I am wrong though b/c if this slipped by people at Cake that really worries me.

Are you or anyone else able to recreate this??? I HAVE to be doing something wrong.  No way something that big went unnoticed.

I should have searched right off. I was able to reproduce the orphaned envelope problem when pasting synth automation, and a quick search found this thread from '08 among others (Google:  paste synth automation site:forum.cakewalk.com)

So apparently it's been with us for some time. Obviously I don't do a lot of synth automation, myself, or I would have remembered this.

I'll have to do a little more searching/experimenting to see if there's a viable workaround, but it doesn't look good.

not quite the same issue as you but i've opened two bug reports from when X1 first came out regarding copying synth automation.  it's still broken.

and CWBRN-5980.

maybe one of these days they'll fix it.

Wow!  Seriously Cakewalk???  Since '08?  Over 3 years and this still hasn't been fixed???  SMH!!!

I'm just now getting into more heavy synth automation as well and this is a BIG show stopper.  I would imagine that someone who is heavily into dance or electronic music couldn't possibly work like this!

I guess this is the type of stuff that a lot of the forum members are  referring to when they complain about bugs that get carried over from version to version w/o being fixed.

Sorry, but things like this are the reason why most professionals just don't take Sonar seriously and why the new kids on the block (Reaper, Ableton, Studio One, etc.) can come along and garner more respect than Sonar which has been around for ages now.  I haven't used Cubase in years but it may be time to seriously give it another look.  Growing tired of all the "workarounds" and bugs w/ Sonar.
