  • Opening a Sonar 1 bundle file in X1

I was digging through the archives today and found and old project I want to re-visit. It was created in Sonar 1 and still opens and plays fine in Sonar 1. I did a "save as" a .bun file and it saved without a problem. I went to open it in X1 but no cigar. I get an error message that it's not compatible and I could try safe mode but that doesn't work either. I could dig through the audio file directory to try to locate the files and rebuild the project but that would be time consuming due to the old audio file system. I'm not concerned about the plug-ins from the old project, I would just like to have the original files, tracks etc. where they should be. Are there any easier options out there. Thanks.

Could you create a new Projects directory on the old machine and open the bun into it, then copy the stuff over to the new machine?

Good idea. I'll give it a go.

Are these on the same computer?  If so, try opening the project in SONAR 1.  Open a blank project in X1.

In the SONAR 1 project, go to Edit>Select All.  Then Edit>Copy.
Then in SONAR X1, go to Edit>Paste.

They're on 2 different machines. Thanks  though.

Bun files in the past where known to produce corrupt files. This was fixed in much latter versions of Sonar.

What you may want to do is send the file to CW to see if they can extract the wav files.

I'm not saying this is the problem but it sure sounds like it. Also X1/X2 should be able to uncompress the files if not than its most likely corrupt.

Also, here's a little trick:  If you rename your .bun file extension to .wav, you can load it into SONAR as one long audio file with all of your clips back-to-back.  Though, it's a hassle to cut it up and line everything up again.

Bill please would you add that tip to the tip thread. That happens to be one of the most useful tips ever. Here

Way cool!!! That's a cool trick. Thanks. F.W.I.W.......Sonar has come a long way since version 1.

Hmm normally SONAR X1 or X2 would open BUN files dating back to SONAR 1 without problems. Have you tried saving a wrk or cwp file and copying over that along with the associated wavedata directory to your SONAR X1 machine? It may just open fine from the project file instead rather than the bundle.
Alternatively if you put your bundle online somewhere I could do some forensic analysis and try and load it :)
