I am stumped. I've been using Cakewalk in its various iterations for decades, but I've never used a VST arpeggiator, like Cream or Obelisk, in my music. Now I'm trying and I'm stumped. I really need someone to point me to how to do this. I've looked in the Cakewalk manual online and I'm still having problems. Obelisk has examples of how to use it with different DAWs, but not Sonar. Can someone help? What goes out of where into what?

Thanks in advance. I'm working with Sonar Platinum

Ok. I have a midi track on track 1, I've got a soft synth on track two, I've got Obelisk arp on track 3 and a midi track on track four.

I send the midi from track 1 to track 2. Everything is checked for midi echo. The synth on track two plays the midi from track 1.

Now what? I can't get the arp to accept a midi echoing through the synth. How do I get track 3, with the arp, to accept a midi from the synth on track 2? Or am I not visualizing this correctly?

An alternate and not working attempt.

On track one is the original midi track. On track two is the synth track. The Obelisk arp in soft synth is inserted in the synth rack but not visible in the main track page. There is now an Obelisk primary on track three. No matter how I try to set it it defaults to the main audio out.  Track four is a midi track which is undisturbed by track 3.

I can't copy and paste the link right now, but there's a VST arpegiattor called Cthulhu, and if you search this forum for "How to use Cthulhu" and then scroll down, you will see that someone explains how to use it in Sonar.

It should be the same procedure with your VST arp.

I recalling having trouble getting it to work once or twice, or more like, it worked, but stopped working. A bug.
It became impossible to get it to work. Made a new project and moved things over to make it work again.
Hasn't happened in recent versions.

A bug.

Not that I don't believe you - but I have used chthulu and many other 'similar' types of vst/vsti's in SONAR for years - they work reliably and consistently. If I have an issue it inevitably gets back to my routing or missing some little thing that isn't immediately obvious.
If there was a bug that prevented this from working correctly I must have missed it. Or it missed me.

It happened last winter. I very much doubt it had anything to to with the plugin.
I was not using chtulu, but a similar vst. Actually trying to make up my mind about buying Cirnu Cream, trying out the Computer Music version.
The only "strange" thing I did was replacing the synth it controlled couple of times, that by itself has very often caused crashes in Sonar.
But not this time. This time it stopped working, no matter what, including synths that worked previously. I spent far too long time trying to find a reason for it, coming to the conlusion, it was a bug the creeped in the project. Restart or reload did nothing. I suspect it had to do with recent changes with routing in Sonar, that has probably been fixed by now.

Why (do you very much doubt it had anything to do with the plugin) - how are you certain it was (?) a SONAR bug?
I also had issues from time to time resolving SONAR's routing, especially after the MIDI routing fixes you alluded to  - which made it necessary to be more specific about device/port and channel. But I was always able to figure out where I had an error in my setup and go from there.
One man's bug is another man's face palm.
BTW - what version of SONAR?

FWIW I have never owned Kirnu Cream and have heard that setting it up is challenging
