I am finally getting around to cloning the one drum track (with all necessary drums on it) onto maybe 3 or 4 tracks then deleting all except (say) snare on one, kick on another, cymbals and toms etc so that they can be treated differently in the mix. Can someone PLEASE go through all the steps needed to do this as I seem to not end up with a series of audio tracks with single drums.......thank you very much.

Some information would be useful. Like...are we talking about audio or MIDI?
If MIDI, you can most likely route every kitpiece to an audio output track of its own?
But I'm only guessing, as I don't know what you're up to.

If it's MIDI, I used to use filter select to cut and paste the snare notes to another MIDI track.  Then repeat for bass, toms and cymbals.  For instance, if the snare notes are C5 say, then set the filter to only select C5, then cut and paste into a new MIDI track and name it Snare.  For cymbals or toms, you can set the filter for a range of notes, say A4 thru F4, or whatever they are, and again just cut and paste into a new track.

If it's audio...I don't know, sounds horrifically laborious.  I would rather re-record a live drum track with each piece on its own track than spend all those hours trying to carve out those pieces out of a single audio track.

CLONING TRACKS?

i don't even know what that means.....

why would you be making copies of tracks?
to what end?

I can imagine it's audio given that he stated he didn't want a mish-mash of audio tracks all with the same "amount" of each drum on it.

For what I know, something like this would be rather tough and would require first and most importantly, EQ'ing to remove the major frequencies of the instruments you don't want (or bring out the freq's in the instrument you're working on).Usually though, even with EQ'ing, you're not going to get rid of ALL of, say, the sharp punch of a kick drum or a snappy snare when attempting to isolate it from a hihat.
Following EQing though, some certain steps with side-chaining could get *decent* results.

But I'll bet some other folks around here have much better insight on and experience in something like this.

There's a CAL script to do it:

Yep, split notes to tracks cal makes short work of splitting up midi drum tracks. It's been around at least as long as Sonar 1.x.

What about drums in a single audio track?

You can get pretty close with addictive trigger. Make enough clones (copies) of the original audio track for kick, snare and each tom. Insert an instance of addictive trigger on each of those new tracks. Dial in each track for it's respective kit piece. You can export midi from AT if you prefer or use Addictive Drums / Addictive Trigger kit pieces. You can simulate overheads with the original audio track.
Here's a previous thread about it: http://forum.cakewalk.com/Addictive-Drums-2-and-single-audio-drum-track-m3596108.aspx

Pretty cool, and very helpful.  I doubt I'd ever need to do that, but it sounds like the OP has his answer.
