Yes Sir...FXpansion have done themselves no favours by switching BFD to 20 bit D/L only files...

WTF are they thinking ? It's a great library and to down sample it to save a little bandwidth is disgusting...

All of my BFD files are 24 bit...

And there's 246 GB of them

4bits is only two shaves and two haircuts. How bad can it be?

We all look different with a shave and a haircut :)

They only did it to save bandwidth and if it didn't save them $$$ - why did they do it ?

When you have such a great sounding library recorded in a world class studio @ 24 bit,why wouldn't any user want that version in preference to one that has been watered down ?

I'm happy that I have the 24 bit files, but I feel sorry for the guys who have to settle for the diluted drums

24bit - 20bit -16bit?

Here is  a post by a highly respected forum member with a counter argument. http://forum.cakewalk.com/fb.ashx?m=2752416

I urge anyone to load up & record 2 BFD sessions - one @ 16 bit and another @ 24 bit

Now tell us if you can hear any difference?

If you can then either:
  1. you have EXCEPTIONAL hearing
  2. there are inconsistencies in your 2 sessions
  3. you're hearing placebo effect
  4. you're lying

I CAN hear the difference between 24 and 16 bit...

It's in the detail and yes - I have excellent hearing...

And I'm not lying

I don't know about using the difference sample rates in BDF, but in final mixes or masters between 16b + 24b they're are noticeable.  Slight as they may be & it is in the details.
Depends on the material too, classical vs rock / reverb tails, clarity, high end squish.
Same with 320mp3 vs 16b wav, others will argue over 24k vs 96k.
Whether or not a casual listener can tell or care is a different story. I can stand listening to 192 mp3's but compare one to a 320 mp3, then compare a 320mp3 to 24b wav. Your ear should hear the difference.

Same with dithering, I prefer Tri or Pow-1 over Powr-3. It's very slight but to me there's a difference, the details- verb/ high-end.

Again, in the scheme of things when it's well mixed & mastered will it matter or hinder the listening experience? probably not.
