SoundCloud is great for posting tunes to display or reference somewhere else. It is built around social networking and "the hope" that someone finds your music. For my view, the socila networking thing is of no interest but it's really good for posting songs 'in development" if you will.

Bandcamp is focused around sales and I think everyone should be on it. We use it to sell directly thereby reducing profit loss from sending everyone to iTunes. With Bandcamp, you pay the PayPal fees for the transactions but that's it. If you use iTunes you lose, then again on the PayPal if that's how you set it up, and you lose even more of the slice if you use TuneCore or other to get it to iTunes. Pain in the ass. Bandcamp lets you sell.

Two different sites. Two different reasons to be on them. But I like both and didn't like the others you mentioned and others beyond that I've seen,

Thanks for that info' :-)

Bandcamp looks promising, and I have noticed more and more musicians using Soundcloud it's just that I don't like their free player (way too big), and their other player widgets are only available for premium paid accounts.  But considering what the site is focused on I suppose it's doable. But man Soundcloud's players are freaking huge

Larry and I started using Bandcamp, but the player sounds pretty bad, worse than MySpace;

Beautiful song, well done :-)  it certainly shines through.

I did compare the track to Soundclick, SC sounded more natural whereas Bandcamp player audio quality reminds me of Garageband.com's audio which sounds watery, like it's been played underwater or something like that (hard to describe).   Anyway I didn't like the sound of GB player and after contacting GB.com about the audio quality they suggested I reupload again, did that, and again, and a month later asked for a refund but GB refused.  That occurred 5 years ago, I've never gone near that site ever again.  Honestly, I think the audio quality of the GB player was worse than Bandcamp but still I can hear that noticeable artifact. Oh well!

Next sites I'm looking into are; Music Submit and Showcase, since they're not just host for musicians pages, playlist, they apparently do more.... (similar to Taxi).

No How
I've got a few songs up at Last.FM and i love the site because it has a vast spectrum of music and a vast spectrum of listeners.   IMO soundclick is all (90%) musicians trying to be heard and 10% people actually listening - if even that.  Last.Fm is much more oriented to listeners.
Like everywhere, if you want to hustle it can get a lot of play ( I don't hustle unfortunately) but even so, it's a cool site.

I stopped using SoundClick and registered my own domain. I've got a simple website that hosts a few of my simple tunes.

I suppose I'm not trying to gain exposure or hustle really - I just wanted somewhere to put them where people could listen.

Thanks Greg, glad you liked it.

I agree about Garageband, that player is awful.

Hi,

I see a large proliferation everywhere ... and while it is nice ... I think there is too much "novelty" ... and too many people are 10 years behind the times.

All in all, having your own website is still the best ... since My Space and all those have limitations ... that eventually will slow you down ... and make things cluttered ... I personally do not like to be amidst ... "everyone else" ... since I am NOT everyone else.

And for you to make your mark ... you can NOT be everyone else. It's that simple.

I'm not sure that My Space, Soundclick, or any of those folks are good enough for you to make ... 3 to 4k per month, so you have enough money to buy food and pay rent and take the girlfriend out once in a while! Or buy her something nice once in a while ...

The only bad thing here ... is that too many companies that do Hosting are really screwed up ... I would always have 3 or 4 accounts that are "investments" ... but this is where trust comes in ... but if you have a piece of paper with a tax return ... the trust issue is not on your side ... it's on theirs ... and if they do not know the difference in investing ... don't bother with them.

But you have to have a return as such, for example, so that people can say ... he's serious, isn't he? ... and you have a chance ... otherwise it's like the majority of the stuff on YouTube and all these sites ... it's all the same and everyone sounds the same and everything is a mom and pop jack cheese song ... and I don't think that I have found enough of these to count on more than one hand ... that are worth the attention!

So ... let me ask you ... where do you want to be?

But don't expect people to do you favors ... the only favor you gonna get is when the numbers start flowing through your hand like nuts and sand ... everyone will want your signature then ... and you can pick and choose!
